Today I "unsubscribed" from Lane Bryant emails! Although they served me very well through the years, no more plus sizes for me.

CheerfulLoser reacted to AZhiker in I am a food addict. And Bypass isn't a cure.
You are right in that bypass won't cure the addiction. It never promised that. It is a tool that limits intake and creates a bit of malabsorption, but does not cure the head part. That is the work you have to do and it will probably take a good amount of therapy. You are clearly getting the endorphin/serotonin/dopamine release from the sugar. Sugar stimulates the same pleasure centers in the brain as cocaine, which is why it is so addictive in its own right. The good news is that if you can avoid all sugar for 3 solid days, the cravings will actually decrease. But you can't let it creep back in, or the cravings come back as strong as ever. The bad news is that you are going to have to work on figuring out another way to relieve stress, boredom, anxiety, or whatever else might be triggering the need for this sugar hit, and to find better coping mechanisms for dealing with the triggers.
You are not alone. Many people deal with this and are able to overcome it. Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. The tool is working for you, but it can only do so much. Best of luck and I really do encourage you to get some therapy to gain some insight and tools to help you be successful for the long term.

CheerfulLoser reacted to maslman in One last try. Has anyone used the insurance approval time as one last college try?
After my initial consultation I started making changes to my lifestyle and eating better. I ended up losing 78 pounds between then and my surgery date (mid March to mid September). I didn't at any point think that hey maybe I won't need to do the surgery, but I wanted to get myself in a good place to allow it to have the best chance of success.

Mine too!!! They are so cheap! Calcium is expensive, but I just keep my eye out for coupons and sales and buy in advance if I have to.

Thanks for all the thoughts—I think I’m going to take a few weeks and just play around with all the suggestions so far. I ordered some Argan oil, a few deep conditioners, etc. if all else fails, I made an appointment with my hairstylist and will get a pixie. 🙂

We all know that Hair loss is likely due to WLS. I’ve accepted it, and am dealing with it. However, since WLS, my remaining hair is dry, frizzy, and brittle. I use good, moisturizing Shampoo and conditioner (salon-recommended stuff), only wash my hair twice a week, and take Biotin and all other recommended Vitamins.

Is this a new norm? Any thoughts on improving my crazy-lady hair?

If you’re having surgery in two weeks, does your doctor have a diet plan for you?

The choice on whether to be vegetarian is your choice, of course. My response was to highlight that it’s not hard to be a vegetarian post-WLS, if that is what you want.

Today marks 6 months Post Op!! I'm thrilled with the progress so far, and look forward to continuing my journey. I'm down 71lbs so far. I need to lose 19 more to get to a "normal" BMI, but would ultimately like to lose another 10 after that, to get down to 130.
My before pictures are from my sister's bridal shower and wedding, the only time I let someone actually take my picture. I hated being the "fat bridesmaid" though! Please forgive the tight clothes in my "after" picture, but I wanted to wear something that would really show off the the progress I've made. Someday I hope to be confident to wear tight clothes like that out in public, but not yet! LOL!!

I climbed a mountain. No seriously, I CLIMBED A MOUNTAIN! I stopped doing uphill hikes MANY years ago because my tachycardia was so bad it made me short of breath to the point I had to rest every 20 feet. Today? I hiked for 14.2 miles. I took the shorter but steeper path up, and the longer but less steep way down. I climbed 3989 ft. I reached the summit of our local mountain. It was amazing. And for most of the uphill, I was able to stop at normal people intervals. And only 4 people passed me (one at the beginning, one in the middle, and a couple at the end. I did stop more frequently when was getting closer to the summit, but I really don't think it was moreso than the average exhausted hiker. My HR WAS quite high during all the incline, but my breathing was still controlled. And this is WITHOUT my tachycardia medication which I had to stop several months ago because my BP was getting too low. Needless to say, this is a major victory.

CheerfulLoser got a reaction from Sabs211 in Preparing for Surgery. Advice: What you wish you knew
I had to get into the mindset that the tool is a tool, and it’s forever. Sometimes I just want to sit down and eat for comfort, and that’s not an option any more.

Also, this is a process. I had the surgery and I had this “magical thinking” going on the the weight would melt away. I’m losing faster than ever, but it’s a pound at a time.

I’m the same way, and it’s unfortunately not uncommon post-surgery. There are many threads on this topic, if you use the search function.

I had surgery in December 2019. I wear slippers while home, and warm socks always. If that’s not enough, I made a foot warmer (flannel bag with rice in it, reheats in the microwave) that I use daily.
