We’re surgery twins! HW: 378 SW: 319.8 CW: 300. I lost a majority of that weight the first two weeks then it stopped/slowed at weeks 3 & 4. My nutritionist said it’s normal and that my body will go into self preservation mode throughout the process due to the rapid weight loss. I can fit comfortably into clothes that were uncomfortable or unbearable to wear before and I feel good. I went from a 28-30 to 22 already. I’m super excited to see where I’ll end up. This journey can get frustrating but I can’t rely solely on the scale to measure my progress.

I told a few close coworkers when I felt comfortable in doing so. Of course my husband and kids know. One of my sisters and one of my best friends. I think that’s a lot of people. I’ve been laying low while I’m working on myself, inside and out, because I don’t need any outside noise, especially if it’s going to be negative. And you kinda know who’s gonna be supportive and who won’t. Tell whoever you feel comfortable with and be vigilant in protecting your peace and energy. If someone comes with that BS, stop them and let them know their opinion isn’t needed, in a nice way of course lol

I think most people freak out before surgery - ANY surgery! So you're in good company!
I'm RNY, not VSG, but the feelings are the same.
Loose skin - yes, you will probably have it. Most people worry about this - I worried about it incessantly when I was pre-op. But from where I am now (almost four years out), and from most other vets I know, at some point you will realize that you wasted a lot of brain cells worrying about this. The weight loss is SO much more important than the loose skin. I've since had mine removed (within the last year, actually), but I would take the loose skin any day over weighing 373 lbs again. ANY DAY!! It's a total no-brainer.

Hair loss - no, it's not a definite thing. Many people do lose hair, but for most, they're really the only ones who notice it. I didn't lose any. Some people don't. This is another thing I worried about incessantly, and it never happened.

Regrets - there are probably a small minority of people who regret it, but for the vast majority, our only regret is that we didn't do this years earlier.

ish_sheddingitall reacted to BajanSleeve in An honest update. Weight Gain
Perhaps this post will help someone who is seeking to do VSG or some form of WLS because I will be honest with you about my journey. It has been 8 months since I had VSG surgery and I have lost only 44 lbs. Up to a month ago I had lost 55 lbs but I have since gained 10 lbs. There are a couple reasons for my weight loss failure and I am just putting them down in writing not so much so that folks can be critical, but more for the folks out there considering this surgery or might just have had it.
I have not been committed to the process of changing bad habits or incorporating exercise into my lifestyle. I must have thought that having VSG was going to magically take away my appetite and food cravings for bad food. Guess what? I was starving the day after surgery! My appetite really never left. So if I did not CHOOSE what to eat and what not to eat, you could pack in tons of calories even in small portions. To cut to the chase, VSG does not work if you are not disciplined with your food choices. That shouldn't be a huge revelation but I actually had a mindset that my stomach would be gone and I would not even want to eat anymore so all the weight would just melt away. It does not happen that way!
I did not follow the instructions and guidelines post surgery about not eating and drinking at the same time. I had been told not to do it, I read that it would stretch your stomach pouch, but I still went ahead and did it. Guess what? My stomach has stretched and I can basically eat a small 'normal' size meal at only 7 months out when it should not be like that this early. Again, not being committed to the process
I am a type II diabetic. The catch 22 is that taking insulin makes you GAIN weight. That is just the nature of insulin and the more insulin you have to take, the more you gain weight. The first 4 months after surgery I was taking hardly any insulin at all but as my stomach expanded and I was able to eat more I had to increase insulin intake. So as a diabetic I'm really supposed to be exercising to compensate for that but cant seem to get this life style discipline into my life. I have a tread mill in the spare room - what is wrong with me!!!!
I am hoping that I can gather the motivation, the inspiration that inner push that I need to develop discipline in my life. i'm almost 50 years old and its really hard changing the way you have lived for so long but there are no short cuts, not even VSG 'saved' me. Sometimes I think the biggest problem and hinderance is just me because discipline does not depend on emotions - discipline is 'just do it' no matter if you 'feel' it or not...………..I NEED this, I need to get this translated from my head knowledge into practical living...….I'm rambling now
I'm hoping my update in the next 3 months will be a very different one in a more successful direction

I'm one week post-op. Taco bell has their rolled tacos which are one of my favorite things in the whole world. Hubby brings it home for the whole family while I'm here sip sip sipping on liquids that I'm officially sick of. I walk by the bag and look in the bottom and there are little cups of nacho cheese that no one's eaten. I got a spoon and took three tiny bites of the nacho cheese... Hey it's a liquid, right?

I am on my pre-op diet and I have done some cheating. However, mines seem mild in comparison. Over the past 8 days, I have eaten some grapes (about 10), a serving of snack Factory Pretzel Crisps (I checked the label and gave myself exactly 1 serving) I put half a banana in my Protein smoothie. I wasn't sure if this is actually cheating or not because bananas weren't on my list of excluded or included fruits I can use for shakes and smoothies. I ate Taco Bell plain Refried Beans when I was out holiday shopping. Ate about 3 sporks of that. My big fail was Sunday. I made a salad for my husband's dinner. Just a plain old iceberg lettuce salad mix with tomatoes, cucumbers, a small amount of bacon bits, cheese, 1/4 a piece of baked crispy chicken, and (yes I counted) croutons with light vinaigrette dressing. Before I know I was huddled in the corner like Smeagal devouring about a cup of the salad! LOL my husband caught me and tried to take it away, but I would not let go of MY PRECIOUS! LOL

Well you've just gained an entire community of "real" friends, and I know we can't hang out in person, but we will be there for you in any way we can. I shut people out too. There were certain people that I avoided seeing or hanging out with for YEARS. There was only a very select inner circle that I still saw regularly leading up to surgery. I'm afraid I became somewhat of a recluse, and as a result, my husband turned into one too. Our friendships ended and we became even less active.
I agree with your dietitian about the dress! However, please take another piece of advice. Please establish with a therapist before surgery. Someone who's been punishing themselves by wearing the same thing everyday may struggle with the emotional hurdles of stalls, timing of weight loss, and internal expectations. This is the biggest mind game I've ever played. And I think you need more people in your corner, so to speak.

Hi. I had surgery on 4/15/19. HW 378. DOS 319.8. CW 296.9. I’m happy with my progress. I lost the first 18 lbs in less than 2 weeks and because of the rapid weight loss my body went into self preservation mode and weight loss stalled. But Its moving again and I think its because I am finally able to get in more Protein and calories. I also walk about 2 miles and do a work out video at home about 5 days per week. So be patient. When you lose weight fast and then stop it’s your body’s natural reaction. Good luck!

I am 3 ½ months out and have lost 60 pounds. I arrived at Onederland this past Friday at 198. I have not seen the 100's in over 20 years! My next milestone is to achieve another loss of 68 pounds to settle around 130ish. I'm only a petite 5'0" frame, and prefer not to look "just chubby". Very thankful I'm no longer morbidly obese, and continue to strive toward normalcy to the fit and trim range. Looking forward to a much different and better end of 2019 holiday season. I love my new sleeve and the endless possibilities...

Congratulations to all for your weigh downs and continued best wishes. Happy spring!

OMG! I'm so happy I could dance down the street naked! I FINALLY made it to Onederland today, 5 months post-op sleeve.
I've been stuck in a stall for five weeks, teasing me at 202 and so close but so stuck and I thought I was never going to lose another ounce for a minute or two.
But now I'm finally a LOSER! Yay! So excited! Now I feel like the scale will keep moving and it can go down to meet my goal.
So glad to be in the 100's again!

this early out, you should be sticking to your program. You're still healing and can injure your stomach if you don't. If your friend cares about you, then she'll be fine with you eating what you're supposed to be eating.
