While complication rates for gastric sleeve surgery are usually 5% or lower, research has shown that the chances of complications increase with smokers. Some studies put the rate of complications around 18% for smokers, which is a dramatic increase and a reason why patients really should not be smoking when they are considering bariatric surgery of any kind. In the nicest way possible why did you bother with the surgery if you're not going to follow the doctor's orders you're putting yourself at serious risk I'm urging you to please stop as a nurse I've seen so many people end up in ICU and I've seen one die because they lied to the surgeon and said they quit smoking when they did not I wish you the best of luck in your journey I know the quitting smoking is hard I smoked up until I started this journey seven months ago when I started my journey and was told that I would have to quit I quit cold turkey and I have not touched a cigarette since believe me I go 50% of my day wanting a cigarette but I also know the repercussions and consequences that goes with smoking one having the surgery and it's not worth my life it's also not worth anybody on the surgical team he's going to operate on me having to know that they lost somebody underneath their time and their hands and having to live with that all because I chose to not have the willpower to quit. I wish you the best of luck in your journey and hope that things get better for you.

Now I wouldn't go that far. That's just silly.
My husband was a smoker when he had a bypass 10 years ago. Thank goodness he had no complications healing, but he was a textbook WLS patient other than that. Lost 130 pounds, and has kept off 110 for 9 years.

Nope -- not at all. And I didn't go outside of my self-imposed parameters during my six month pre-op diet either. And the result? I lost 99 pounds pre-op, and I've lost another 34 pounds since my surgery seven-and-a-half weeks ago -- 133 pounds total.
And I don't believe we "cheat." I believe we make conscious choices about everything we do (or don't do) in life.
Good luck as you continue your journey.

I'm with @@LipstickLady no clue what ur talking about and when it's posted on a public site for thoughts advice or questions that made it her and everyone else who visits this site they're business. So that aspect made no sense and nobody was Harassing or judging but giving her the truth of what needs to be done with the journey you can't sugar coat everything let me tell you if my professors in college sugar coated everything for me I would have never succeeded in getting my RN being tough on people sometimes opens there eyes to new prospectives in life and to what needs to be done for success. She made it everyone's business. Have a blessed and great day and gl in your journey. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ur phone and charger. Gas x strips (highly recommended). Personal hygiene products. Slippers. U will spend most of ur time sleeping.

I'm am four days into my preop diet and it's not as horrible as I thought it would be the worst part is getting down the Protein shakes. I am struggling with that bc I'm not a sweets person. So I get nauseous. I'm gunna try the Protein powder to mix in my broth this weekend. But I'm down a total of 24 lbs. I'm completely shocked didn't think I cld loose that much that fast. When I get hungry I find something to keep me busy organizing cupboards cleaning out the fridge. I cook every night for my family and I sit at the dinner table while they eat. I have to get used to this bc I can't expect them to make the same changes especially when two of my kids have problems gaining weight. And it's not like if after I have the surgery I can go to a party or family function and say hey guys don't eat I can't and it makes me want too. That would be craziness lol. So I'm preparing myself and I honestly think the pre op diet is great to mentally prepare people. Just make sure you stick to what u r prescribed as ur diet. Everyone's is different I cannot have any food just liquids. And everything low fat or non fat I would kill for a price of chicken right now but it's not worth it. As a nurse I've seen to much to not follow the diet orders. Best of luck on ur journey.

I also have issues with them I have bought the non flavored Protein mix and mix it into v8 tomatoe juice which is on my liquid diet. And premier Protein shakes I can tolerate. I'm on my pre op diet and struggle to get the Protein in on the liquid diet.

I even asked the surgeon at my 2 week check up if he made everyone's stomach the same size because I felt like he had made mine different somehow
