  2. I personally find it matters on how much tact the person has. If it is a sincere comment like "You look so great! Good For you!" I am flattered. I got one comment one time that still makes me shudder. It was from my sister in law's friend who only sees me twice a year. Her exact words were "Oh my god you look great!!! I mean you like lost an entire person !!! You were so big before ! I mean wow!!!" Geee thanks !!!
  3. "So the secret to the band success is really inside YOU and what you make of the tool " So true !!! This made me think of the line from the Wizard of Oz : "You've always had the power, my dear. You've had it all along." - Glenda, the good witch The Lap Band Just helps to bring out your own inner will power Congrats you look great !!!
  4. Boo Boo, when I first joined Lapbandtalk a few weeks after being banded I came across one of your posts with your signature at the bottom with a before and current picture. You really helped to motivate me and helped me to realize that large amounts of weight could be lost with the band not just RNY. Thanks !
  5. I had emerged from a childhood of being obese as a slim size 6 teenager vowing never to be fat again. A decade later I was bigger then ever. There was no one specific event that made me decide that having the Lap Band placed was the right decision for me, rather it was all of the small indignities that were becoming common place in my life. There were many, but with each new indignity I became more hindered in my ability to live the type of life that I wanted to. At first not being able to cross my legs was just something that I would have to live with. Then I had to start looking for seats without arms, which made going to a movie an anxiety producing event. Eventually shaving my legs became a feat worthy of a contortionist. I was actually grateful that my then year old son was a late walker, as I could not fathom chasing after a toddler I couldn’t understand why I was so fat. I had been a vegetarian for almost 15 years I was insulted whenever a complete stranger or doctor implied that I must be scarfing down whoppers and fries. Of course I knew the answer, I just ate too often and too much.I ate when I wasn’t hungry, I ate when I was sad, I ate when I had a argument with my husband, I ate when my feelings had been hurt because I had been ostracized due to my weight. After delivering my son in May 2006 I weighed in at 375 pounds, six months later I was down to 330 and the scale wouldn’t go down from there. Both my mother and my husband asked why I couldn’t just lose weight on my own again. I could never express what I felt, inside “Why ? When I won’t be able to keep it off ?” At that time I went to an information session at my local hospital, I decided that night that I much preferred having the Lap Band placed instead of either RNY or the Duodenal Switch, the only three surgeries preformed there. I also learned that I would have to wait until I was at a least a year post par tum to have the surgery, the hospital’s policy. I would love to say that during the interim between the information session and my surgery eight months later I changed my eating habits and started a healthy new lifestyle, but in reality I ate like I was going to the chair. I went for all of the prerequisite exams and learned what I was truly doing to my health. I was at the cut off point for not needing a Cpap machine, my heart was enlarged, I had horrible GERD, and my joints ached constantly. Yet I couldn't stop eating. Still when I received a call on July 26, 2007 saying that there was a cancellation with my surgeon and I could have my surgery in a mere 5 days I balked. “Could I really do this?” Resoundingly the answer that came from within was “YES I CAN ” I told my skeptical spouse and mother my decision and turned into a shrew waiting for my surgery day. I weighed in at 342 pounds the day of my surgery. The band has been an amazing tool in my life giving me a sense of satiety that I never had before. I have had success with my band because I keep reminding myself of my inner voice that told me I could when the closest people to me were skeptical. I walk 90 minutes a day at least 5 days a week and follow the Bandster rules. Today I weigh 212 pounds and am 47 pounds away from my goal. I will get there, although it is getting more difficult to lose. The quality of my life is so much better and instead of learning to live with indignities I am finding non scale victories NSVs)everywhere...
  6. I'm going out for Indian food tonight, which is a treat since I haven"t had any since being banded. Does anyone have suggestions on what to get? Today my restriction is pretty tight, so nothing to heavy. Thanks for the help !!! Oops I meant Indian !!!
  7. Hi I was banded on 7-31-07 at Staten Island University Hospital, and while I have worked really hard to make my band work,I have had nothing but problems from the "support" staff . There have been several incidents of missing test results, botched appointments, and billing miscues. My surgeon was fine, but to go through all the problems with the staff for a dr. who is just "fine" doesn't seem worth it. So I am considering going to NYU for my care. Are you happy with the level of competency? Do you see the dr's for your adjustments or is it done by an RN? Did anyone else transfer their records to NYU? Thanks!!
  8. I had a serious case of insomnia the other night and saw and infomercial for Wen. I was curios but didn't want to spend all that money for nothing. Now I think I will give it a try!
  9. Sorry this happened to you!!! My mom ( who is NOT banded but lost over 100 lbs a decade ago very slowly) had the same thing happen to her last yr. My dh had to rush her to the hospital while i was away. at first her docs thought she had a liver disease but it was her gall bladder. Hers had built up over years. I think it is a risk whenever you lose a great amount of weight. I hope you are feeling better!!!
  10. oops just rechecked the label, it's 150 calories per bottle Jack- I am thinking it has to be because the 3rd and 4th ingredients are types of sugars
  11. In addition to Protein shakes, crystal light and coffee I am really starting to like Vitamin Water. The thing is 1 bottle has about 250 calories in it !!! I can't drink a whole bottle at 1 time , but was just wondering if anyone had thoughts on vitamin water? Do you think the extra Vitamins are worth it or is it just sugar water ? Right now I have it on occasion as a treat & it hasn't affected my weight loss but I am not sure that it fits into my new healthy lifestyle
  12. I said good bye to diet soda the night before surgery. I have had a sip since and it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I love coffee now and Vitamin Water I have to be very careful with the vitamin water though cause it has calories :tt2: but I like it almost as much as I used to like soda
  13. Gail, I think that is awful that your dr. won't fill you because you gained a little. I would think that is a sign that you need more restriction!! Can you find another dr. to do your fill?
  14. I LOVE tofu teriyaki and from my experience with that, I have to say that tofu itself is a mushy, but that yummy crunchy skin really isn't . Can you pry the tofu away from the skin ? take care
  15. I tried taking a few small sips after eating once( I was so thirsty wish I had thought of the ice cube thing) and all of my food came back up. Certainly not an experience that I plan on repeating . I have read other posts where ppl. state that they feel as though the food is being pushed through their pouch leaving them hungry sooner. Yet I have also read about a lucky few who can sip and seem to have no problems Now I wait until I feel as though the food has passed through the band to sip

I had the same problem post op when I was on liquids my surgeon's nutritionist told me to take Metamucil. It really helped, and once I started mushies the problem stopped.
  17. I didn't have EPO at the time of my surgerybut I do now and they cover the cost of office visits for me now ( not the fills though) the consultations and floro
  18. I have to say that for me the first 115 lbs just flew right off. The last ten I have had to really fight for and I still want to lose 47 more. I have pretty decent restriction right now, I make healthy food choices so I am pretty sure that I am going to have to change my exercise routine to get to goal. Right now I walk 5X a week for 90 min blocks I guess maybe I need to try taebo or something different.
  19. I have been sitting here all night trying to figure out what's wrong with my band since I have such bad heartburn. My GERD has been gone for the last year since banding. I was sure that I had slipped (even though I can still eat the right portion sizes) Then it occurred to me this all started after having a Mikes Hard Lemonade last night. This was my first alcoholic drink in the last year and I am pretty sure it's the culprit. Right now I am waiting for the antacid to kick in I definitely have not missed the reflux !
  20. I have a few events coming up that will require a bathing suit. I refuse to sit on the side lines after having dropped so much weight, like I have done for the last several years. This put me in the precarious position of purchasing swim wear. ACK !!! When I was a teenager I had dropped 135 lbs on my own ( of course I couldn't keep it off) and only had mildly flabby arms to contend with. Ten years later and I am not as fortunate. Besides my arms, my thighs are awful and I have a shelf for an abdomen from having a c-section. Yet some how I am now nearly flat chested ( weight loss and nursing perhaps ?) A plastic surgeon could make a fortune off of me. Ok enough complaining so my body isn't perfect and I am probably being overly critical anyway I purchased a black Tankini top ( off the rack for Macy's Misses section YEAH!) and am looking for men's board trunks ( ever notice how men's trunks go down to the knee and women's boy shorts stop just under your bottom ?) I figure I can throw an old tee over my make shift suit. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Or their own experiences ?
  21. I was banded on 7/31/2007 It is the best decision that I ever made. I remember that the hospital called five days before and said that there was a cancellation and they had an opeing for me , or I'd have to wait until 8/14 I jumped at the sooner date ( so not like me) and haven't looked back since. Good Luck to you
  22. Tomato soup sugar free ice pops vegetable broth crystal light vitamin water V8 jello hmm.. that's all that I can think of I will try to dig out the list that my dr's office gave me last yr. good luck with your banding
  23. for vibrant color Shellie try Manic Panic http://www.manicpanic.com/classic%20cream%20formula.html
  24. I have always had very long hair down to my mid back and in April I had it cut down to shoulder length in a layer cut. This past Saturday when I went back I had a "oh what the hell moment" took a deep breath and asked my stylist to do a short angled bob. I have to say while my hair has never been this short before I love it. I have wavy hair naturally so I have to straighten it after washing. I just wanted to say don't be afraid to go short!
  25. I started out with a BMI of 53 so it took a while for ppl to notice the difference I would say about 60 lbs
