I hate C-PAPs!
Did you know as little as 20 lbs weight loss or gain can change the shape of your face? You may not notice it normally but anyone with a CPAP Mask can have a big enough change in their face to need a different mask or refitting. There are a ton of things you can do to help make the masks not leak, but first off is making sure its the right size. I didn't think about it and had been using the same size mask that i had been using for 13 years. Well 3-4 months ago After trying 3 masks I decided to go into the DME's Office for a fitting. And I was wearing a mask 1 size to large, and after actually talking to a knowledgable RT explaining where the problems were and what was going on She got me a dream mask. lol I Love it. Its Soooooooooo comfy compared to all the ones I tried earlier this year. Its totally different then any of the *Standard* masks they give to people first. Aparently the DME's will give you the cheapest most popular mask when you first get your equipment. Unless you know what you want and ask for one by name you pretty much get what they want to give you. Which is usually whicever one is cheapest so they get more profit out of it. Most insurances pay for a new mask every 6 months. Get with your DME and tell them your current mask isnt working. A good article on mask problems. www.cpaptalk.com CPAP and Sleep Apnea Discussion Forum They now have special CPAP Pillows, Hose set ups, Pad-A-cheeks for no more mask marks on the face and more. I wan't a PAP PIllow cause I tend to burry my face in the pillow when I sleep but I can't afford one yet. Might try to make one though. Its specially shaped so your not turning your mask into the pillow when you lay on your side. I have learned so much from this forum. On how to make my treatment more comfortable. www.cpaptalk.com CPAP and Sleep Apnea Discussion Forum

Rash..under my stomach (apron)
Its because of the surgery your system is unbalanced. At least thats how my doctor always explained it to me. Its like in our intestines if you take an antibiotic it kills off the good bacteria along with the bad right and you end up with dirahhea(SP?). Most diabetics need to get that diflucan pill anytime we take antibiotics cause we will invariably get a yeast infection. (I demand the pill anytime i get an antibiotic now cause I WILL get a yeast infection never fails) Its that inbalance that causes the yeast to get out of control, we always have some of it in our systems its normal in the correct amounts. Its just when something gets out of control like an infection, blood sugar, PH, or to much moisture or a weakened immune system, when it gets out of control and needs to be cut down to normal again. Its most likely a combo of the antibiotics and surgery.

Rash..under my stomach (apron)
Yep its yeast and you can shower/bathe 3 times a day and that won't phase it.. Keeping it clean and DRY is the key. Gold bond powder is a god send, and so is the monostat cream, treatments for athletes foot and jock itch will work too but many hurt like heck!! For me using monostat creme when I get one works in 2 days, the first application of cream stops the pain, the second day gets rid of it. After that I do a preventative daily thing after my shower using germx handwashing gel. But NEVER ON OPEN RASHY SKIN alcohol in it burns. DRY well I wedge a towel up under my belly while I dry the rest of me then air dry it under the fan in my room. (Blowdryers and CPAPS work well here for help drying) and powder. In the summer if I skip the germ x daily I will still get the rash after 3-4 days of washing and powdering so I don't skip it anymore. I started the germx because the constant washing/powdering was drying my skin out horribly but I noticed the germx I keep in the kitchen has moisturizers in it and I never needed lotion for my hands anymore. So what the heck. It works well for me. And its cheaper then lotion too. But yea if you ever want to have PS for your tummy in the future go the doctor for every rash so its documented.

I hate C-PAPs!
Losing weight is NO GUARANTE your sleep apnea will go away, for many it does or becomes mild enough they dont need the CPAP machine anymore but it is not a gurantee, Skinny people can and do get sleep apnea too. Just not as commonly. Rest of the article is here www.cpaptalk.com CPAP and Sleep Apnea Discussion Forum Letting Apnea go untreated not only causes higher risks of accidents from driving or operating machinery, They are now starting to show studies that OSA may be linked to depression, diabetes and other diseases. People suffering from untreated apnea may have , loss of memory, Heart attacks, high blood pressure, irritability(mood swings), depression, malaise, loss of productivity and work performance, extreme mental and physical exhaustion, loss of judgment, Many often also find they increase their carb intake in order to have more energy/stay awake. Its not always easy to get used to wearing the mask but It can be done, It takes time and effort and alot of trial and error. And one of the biggest mistakes people make is making due with the first mask your given. Which often doesn't fit right in the first place, you have to keep trying till you find the one right for you, of course the medical supply companys wont tell you this cause they LOSE money when you need to try several masks. Like many others I didn't want to wear a mask to bed at night. But after the night in the lab after they put a mask on me sfter 1 hour I actually got several hours uninterupted sleep for the first time in years!! I decided then I would wear the mask somehow. That was 14 years ago. And I love my CPAP now. It keeps me alive, Keeps me awake. If you started having chest pain would you ignore it and not go to the Emergency room cause you know its not gonna be comfortable? Or live with a broken leg because you don't wanna wear the cast?? Heck everyone here has either HAD surgery or is considering surgery for their health. It doesn't make sense that you would go to the extreem of surgery for one life threatning condition but totally ignore another one?? Sorry to sound so agressive about it but I have had 1 possibly 2 family members die before the age of 50 cause they refused to try the machine. They would take fists fulls of pills every day but refused the machine. To me that just don't make sense at all. And granted you won't hear that Sleep apnea killed <Insert name> But it contributes so much to higher blood pressures and strain on the heart.

me too! I only put one on when I leave the house mostly because I know mine don't fit well at all. But I can't seem to find any to fit without paying 75$ a piece. So mine are anchient and starting to get ragged. Plus I am picky I dont do back hooks at all. They have to hook in front and I like the posture backs, so the straps don't travel down my shoulders. Kind of ticks me off I can find thousands of online sites that carry bras up to sizes like G HH or even Z as long as your 36-48 inches around!! But I cant find one that has sizes bigger then a 52. I only need a D or DD cup but I need like a 64 around. =/

I'm Mad!!
Wow I gotta say your sister is one messed up person, You sure shes not on drugs? and definally put some distance betweeen her and you. But you dont have to do the same to her kids. They probably realize their moms being a B**** too. Just do what you can to stay in touch with the kids and not your sister. I Have been a caregiver for my father in law and I have 2 sons with ADHD So I know what your going through. We tried tons of alternatives for both boys from diets to holistic and each time ended up on meds. With the oldest I had to call it stop when his doctor keep adding stronger more nasty meds. When he refused to eat and could sleep. He stoped them all and did so much better after. He didn't finish high school though cause of it. But he went on to job corps and once in a environment where he could work his own pace he flew through all his GED courses and all the computer courses he took in record time. Now on the youngest he is on concerta only because my insurance wont pay for anything else till we try it first. And he did ok on it last year but its not the answer. I am not happy with the results. Ever 5-6 months it seems like they have to raise the dose and that i dont like so we are gonna see if the doctora can push the insurance to try something else. Again with him we tried diets, modified behavior programs at home etc. and none work well with him. But one thing the new doc has reasured me about is that its a learning process and what works for one kid doesnt work for the next and it can be frustrating. Having a doc that realizes this and works with you is crucial. Important thing is dont let your screwed in the head sister ruin the good thing you got going, grats on the weight loss!!!

the not smoking is going fine, 2 days ago i started on the 14mg patch been hitting the cough drops a bit ahrd i noticed and having to think conciously more about not smoking, but handling it. was kind of nice going to cracker barrel the other day and sitting in the non smoking area. lol man marv got sourdough bread as a side with his meal 3 slices!! I warned him. his blood sugar was 300+ that night. I told him. mine on the other hand was 127 I had a grilled chicken sandwich and side salad and 1/3 of my sons steak fries. But it was nice to see him fill up quickly. the reduced portions at home are starting to be noticable. at least on me and josh. well i gotta go back to st vincents on the 25th or around then. i gotta schedual it for a friday incase i have to stay overnight again, for another heart cath and another stint untill we get all my blockages handled my cardio wont even consider clearing me for a band till all thats handled. so have to wait and see.

Teens & Lap Band Surgery
I have to say it depends on the teenager. If he/she is mature enough to follow the guidlines of being a successful bander. And will make the nessisary changes to their life/diet then I'm all for it. The sooner the better. I just wish my teen daughter was a good candidate for the band. But shes not. She totally refuses to even consider eating better and actually fights us for her carbs. Its sad. an example, I have almost totally stoped buying white carbs. The only thing that is not whole wheat or complex carbs now in the house is rameen. My y oungest requested to keep it cause he is painfully thin and its a favorite of his. So I consided there and still buy it. She will do things like eat the m eat of her plate when I fix dinner and trash the veggies, then half an hour later shes in the kitchen making rameen. Shes been known one week I didn't buy the rameen so she had friends sneak her in fast food through her window. So if your a teen who is mature enough to handle it, and your parents are ok with it and your serious about it good for you!! I hope my daughter don't wait toill 400+ Pounds like I did. 1 year and still trying to get a band =/ but getting closer.

Vomiting thick stuff: What is it and why??
the acid in the soda was cutting through the mucus. The body went into overdrive pumping out mucus to try to get your stuck food down. Sodas good for that especially coke as it is the most accidic soda. But I would check with your doctor to make sure its ok to use soda in that instance. Something like orange or grapefruit juice might be better. With my allergies I used to always have a thick layer in the back of my throat constantly and would drink coke when my throat etc clogged up and pepsi all the rest of the time lol. Now i dont need to since we finally found a pill combo that handles the allergies, so i dont drink soda anymore period unless we re out and I can't get something better. Im preperation for getting a band.

How supportive was your husband??
First off sorry your having it so rough. But I agree with WASa. You can't depend on anyone but yourself here. And I don't mean to sound hurtfull but why didn't see to your familys feeding arrangements beforehand if you wanted to avoid food totally?? I mean I can understand not wanting the temptation but but gee it sounds a bit of overkill to refuse to cook period. I would have made up 10 days worth of meals to freeze if It was me so at least the kids/DH can pop stuff in the microwave. If they are old enough. Unless your man NORMALLY cooks and shares in the chores normally tossing it all on him for 10 days can be pretty daunting. I know my man can't cook much at all and asking him to do it all for 10 days would be a disaster! lol He can make rameen and oatmeal and hamburger. Anything else mine would be lost. The kids would be more succefull at cooking then he. Because this is just MY opinion you are being silly. No offence but you can't expect everyone everyone to keep temptation away from you period. It is not possible unless your gonna lock your self in a room with a case of shakes for 10 days. You gotta start with the will power and self control, noone can do that for you. And your just starting, how are you gonna manage if it gets worse? Also you might have to sit down and actually make a list of the things YOU EXPECT him to do and how to help out. Just to make sure your both thinking the same things. Because what you consider <Insert chore> Might be totally different then what he thinks it is. I have 4 days bedrest after a heart cath yesterday and asked my BF to put on some laundry.. OMG BIG Mistake. He just tossed an armload in from the hamper of half bathtowels half clothes now I will never get the lint out of his work clothes. *Sighs*

Chicken, chicken, chicken...
If your having problems with chicken being to dry. You can buy chicken that they have added chicken broth/stock to. I Know Aldies does this to their chicken breasts and they come out so MUCH more moist then buying chicken from anyplace else. It makes the salt content a bit higher but personally I don't worry to much about salt. I just don't add anymore to it. A 10 minute broil on each side and it comes out beautiful.

Does The Body Accept A Foreign Object?
For the most part yes the body will acept it. They have been putting foreign objects into people for years. I just had this talk with my surgeon this morning ( I had to have a heart cath/angioplasty with a stint inserted, just got home!) He was saying the materials they use are deliberatly chosen and designed so the body doesn't regect them. And that occasionaly it does happen that someone can't tollerate them in the body but thats a pretty rare occurance. He said I was more then likely to need the stint replaced several years down the line more from from collapse then rejection.

Haircut suggestions?
This is something I have seriously been considering for a few months now. I Haven't had a major cut except dead ends trims for years now. And my hair reaches the small of my back. But now that I finally got my dream of having long hair I want it off!! LOL Already cut off 4-5 inches cause it was starting to hurt. My problem is i can't STAND IT to be on the back of my neck anymore. I have lived in ponytails or some other way of wearing it up for so long. It drives me nuts to have it down. I know what sort of cut I want. I'd love a bob but my hair is naturally wavy its just now its pretty straight cause of its length. A bob means I would have to buy a straightner and fuss with it every day, something else I don't want. So I was thinking of a shaggy/layered pixie type but longer then a traditional pixie. That way I can wash it moose or gel it and go. But what I want most is color. And I don't mean normal color I want purple or hot pink but where to find it so that it lasts longer then a wash or 2? My daughter has tried some brands off the net but they don't seem to last more then a week or so at the most either.

So give me the scoop about staples.
Had em with my c-section also.. one or two stung a tiny bit as they pulled them but for the most part it wasn't painfull at all.

Officialy denied.
Definatly Appeal! A secondary insurance wouldnt hurt but appeal the origional even if you do get a secondary one.

OMG!!! I just have to rant about this!
Egads band or no band that is extreeme. That woman didnt need a band she needs her jaws wired shut. OH bleh no that wouldnt work, shes the type who would then live on milkshakes through straws and whine she hasnt lost anything. I always assumed the pre op psych visit was meant to catch people like that?!? so why was she allowed to have the surgery to start with? Musta been a psych that didnt their job very well or something. And if shes in ongoing counceling it sure aint working. unless they have gotten her down to 21 ice bars or something. Thats mind boggling. Thats like 3 boxes of ice cream bars.

100 Pounds in 5 Months!
WoW! Awesome job.

How Cranky did you become.....
when you make your jello use half the water!! it still makes jello but its thicker, I would ask your doctor about it after surgery before doing though because its allot thicker and wouldnt be good for liquid stage. But should be ok before hand as long as its still sugar free. Its thick enough kids can pick it up like finger food.
-
Giving up my will...
If jello is on your allowed list  Pre op and not post op (I wouldnt recomend it post cause it makes it more solid) you can also use half the recomended amount of Water when making up the sugarfree jello giving it a more thicker consistency, I used to make the kids cookie cutter jello thingys that way. Or get a bunch of flute type wineglasses (or any old glass honestly) and do layers of 2-3 flavors.

Coldstone Creamery
Not all doctors require a liquid pre op some just say SUPER low fat, low carbs. And a few say liquids Breakfast and lunch with a sensible dinner. If you've ever watched the lapband surgery videos on youtube you can see how they have to use a bar of sorts (Shaped alot like a L or J)to hold the liver up while they work on you. If your liver is to large there have been people on these boards who doctors have just closed them up and stoped the surgery at that point(not very many but it has happened!), because their livers were to large to safely move out of the way. It is my understanding that the liver cannot be handled to much as it damages easily. And being as we only have one they cant take chances. Their might be other reasons some doctors insist on liquids too besides shrinking down the liver, if your on only liquids that would tend to make sure your bowels were also cleared out BEFORE surgery(liquid in liquid out after a couple of days), so the chances of the anesthisia and or surgery causing constipation would be less and avoiding the old pre surgery enemas they used to do. Also being on all liquids, its pretty assured that you will have none or very little fat in your liquids, youv'e also started on breaking the carb/sugar/caffiene addictions before surgery to. Many don't allow caffiene before/after surgery either. And it could be also be a way of testing you to make sure your dedicated enough to handle the liquid phase afterwards, When healing is the most important part of the whole process. And honestly the fastest & most weight loss I have ever had over the years has been on liquids, (medifast, slimfast etc.) But you can't live on them forever. linksmom OOh now that sounds good! We dont have any Coldstones around here. Closest thing even remotely similar (so not really! ) is the snow cone stand out front of the hardware store LOL. Now I may just have to go out again and get some strawberrys. But my feet hurt darnit!

just got home
Actually if shes very big or has any kind of back issues at all back pain is not suprising. I know after my apendicitis back pain was my WORST pain, cause they put you on a totally FLAT operating table. And if your like me and have much of a backside laying on anything flat & hard actually twists the spine up pretty bad in ways your not used to. MRI's or anytime I have to lay on a hard flat surface will put me in pain for DAYS afterwards. Imagine trying to sleep on a hardwood floor  Same difference. Best bet is a heating pad and make sure she takes her pain meds regularly as the perscription says. Like Northwest_Nance said they work better if she takes them before they run out or the pain returns.
