Melixxa got a reaction from Frustr8 in Surgery Scheduled! Revision Sleeve to Bypass
Lately I have been thinking that this will never really be over for me. I have been reading about people who had bypass surgery many years ago and needed a "tune-up" or an over-stitch, which is apparently pretty simple and done on an out-patient basis. Personally, I would rather submit to some kind of surgery every ten years or so than further damage my body with out-of-control weight gain. At age 48, I am finally done beating myself up over this. I truly believe that if intelligence, my best effort and a powerful desire to do be healthy were enough, I would be at my goal weight without surgery right now.
Best wishes to you all who are trying so hard to get this very heavy monkey off your back!

PPIs for short term use are fine but people who take them for 1+ years are at increased risk for some serious issues as I mentioned above, plus kidney disease, heart attack, infections, and Vitamin deficiencies. They weren’t developed/approved for long term use. According to the drug label, Nexium is recommended for no longer than eight weeks for acid reflux issues and six months for ulcer healing purposes. But not treating acid reflux puts you at increased risk for esophageal cancer, which does not typically have high survival rates. Therefore GERD/reflux is something that people must not ignore and should work closely with the right medical team to monitor and treat.

You're right. It is ultimately my choice, and I don't have to listen to anyone. No one knows my situation quite like I do. Thanks for the advice!!!!!
    Take care!

There were some t-shirt dresses that I loved at J Crew, but the colours I wanted only came in large, and I wear an extra large. My revision surgery is in early July, so I hope it was a safe gamble...fingers crossed that between my pre-op diet and a bit of post-surgery weight loss, I will fit into them before summer is over!

I'm so happy to have found this thread!
It's been five years since my sleeve surgery, which I honestly look back on as a really positive experience. I lost 80 pounds after all, and kept it off for three years. But I was still 30 pounds from my goal, and I have regained 30 more pounds, too.
A few years back, I belonged to a Facebook support group for sleevers who all had our surgery in the summer of 2013. The first time I raised the question of revision was at about the two-year mark, and people jumped all over me. I remember one woman in particular asking, "What is wrong with you?" It was so hurtful. We can be so smug and judgmental when we first finally get a handle on our weight. I see it all over this board.
But the reality is that I was hungry--not head hungry--but like I would have killed for a even a boiled egg or an apple--on my trip home from the hospital! The sleeve made it easier for sure, but losing that initial 80 pounds felt very much like white-knuckle dieting, and I never experienced the "I-sometimes-forget-to-eat" kind of honeymoon that other sleevers reported. It happens, I'm told, that some people just never do lose their appetites, even for a brief time. The grehlin changes that we hope will happen just never do in some cases.
I have been thinking long and hard about revising to a mini-bypass. But information on this topic seems so scarce. I think many folks feel shamed into silence, which makes me sad. Ironically, the FB group where my feelings were so hurt is now full of people feeling disappointed and guilty about regain and dreaming of revision.
Please keep the stories coming, the good and the bad. And congratulations to all the above posters who are experiencing success, and best wishes to everyone considering another surgery!

I bought a medium dress because it was on sale for $6 , at that time I was still in a 2x but I figured I would fit it eventually. I now comfortably fit it.

Had my revision on May 30th to gastric bypass and couldn't be happier!!!!!!! I suggest everyone who feels the way I did to go back to the doctors, they are there to help. Screw people who shame you into thinking it was YOUR fault. I waited nearly 2 YEARS because I blamed myself for my sleeve failure. LOW AND BEHOLD, it was SURGEON ERROR! You hope and pray that you are not the 1% of this group, but sometimes you are, and it is okay. Down from 250 to 233, and couldn't be happier! Seeing the number on the scale decrease again is amazing. Not only that, my face is slimmer and its also those non-scale victories that have me so happy!

If you like your Ninja, check out Vitamix blenders. We started off on a Ninja, but upgraded to a Vitamix because you can make hot Soup in them. Seriously, cut up vegetables and add some stock, blend until hot. Makes some really incredible Soups.< br>

And I did forget to mention, the only medications I now take our drumroll please zero. Other than my Vitamins that's it. Let's all do a happy dance for that, at one point I was taking upwards of 20 pills a day giving myself daily shots weekly and monthly chemotherapy. Not a bad trade off A gastric bypass for my life

    Hello

Between May 2014 & April 2018 I lost around 145lbs. My doctors are keen to see me lose another 112lb so yes, you could say I had and still have a lot to lose. In the 3 weeks since my revision I have seen weight loss of 18lbs which to me is falling off, I am very happy with the progress.

They always told me it was a 2 stage procedure. 4 years ago I was told I would eventually have a DS, but my surgeon back then has since retired and his replacement is not a fan of the DS, in his words it is 'outdated and barbaric' and it was his preference to perform the Bypass on me. I took his advice as the expert.

I haven't regretted a single second since. I wish you the best of luck with your procedure

I'm quite surprised about the (not really sure what to call it) "dynamics" that take place in the WLS community regarding revision surgery, weight regain, or lack of sufficient weight loss, complications etc. - there seems to be a strong urge to blame the patient for everything. Also insisting on programs, education, compliance etc. (not saying insisting on this is wrong, so no discussions about this, please!) while patients going in for e. g. elective coronary bypass don't have to jump through some arbitrary insurance hoops like a drilled seal at the aquarium to get approved for surgery.
However, when looking at e. g. patients suffering from PAD (peripheral arterial disease) getting treatment, including angioplasty - there don't seem to be these strong emotions involved I can see in the WLS community, even though patients continue to smoke, don't care about blood pressure or blood sugar levels enough or their lipids. Yeah, doctors might be frustrated sometimes but I have to say, I'm not really when having to perform another angioplasty on the same patient and the patient still hasn't quit smoking. I just do it. I don't really get emotionally involved. So maybe the surgeons performing WLS or WLS revisions don't have these kind of emotions as well.
The WLS patients themselves seem to be the ones with the strongest emotions regarding these issues. (At least that's my impression.)

I sort of hate the tone of many of these replies.
So, if surgery 1 didn't work for a person, they need to just be unhealthy because that's what they deserve? I'm not sure about that one. At least they keep trying. JMO.
Not referring to the OP btw.
I'm not a revision patient, but really if things were different I would absolutely explore all options.

I actually looked in to the sleeve, but when I researched it and read about the higher percentages of weight loss with the RNY I changed my mind immediately! I am 10 months out and 107 of 111 lbs lost. I have 4 lbs to go. I had a text book surgery and recovery with absolutely no side effects. So, no, I have no regrets. Nothing can compare to the feeling of pulling on size 4 Levi's and not having to pull hard to get them buttoned.

    Welcome. As far as pointers:
    I would recommend three things.
    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
    3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

I was in the same situation and i'm finally getting revised to RNY on 1/30. I had to jump through all the hoops again. Had my Sleeve done in Delaware and when i moved to Washington State my new Bariatric Dr said i should never had the sleeve in the first place on account of my Diabetes. I also had no restriction and gained all of my weight back. I had a few tests done and it showed that my pouch was also made too large. Not that i stretched it but just cut wrong it was essentially the same size as most normal stomachs so either i had a huge stomach before or it was not cut right. I didn't have a choice on wether to resleeve or do RNY i had to go to RNY. My Sleeve also gave me a bad case of GERD and Bypass is supposed to help with it. I'm sorry i don't have any stats to provide you but i wanted to let you know that you are not alone

I am a sleeve patient myself and I'm really intrigued by the balloon!
I think you made a great choice and I wish you lots of success! I would do it all over again for sure. One thing I thought I should mention is that the magic of the sleeve is temporary. I'm three years out and have gained back 30 pounds, and I have met literally thousands of people online that have regained a big chunk of their weight after a few years--many have regained all of it. You get about one year's grace, and then the old-fashioned dieting/workout plan is the only way to keep your momentum.
