TES got a reaction from pottergirl in 12 days post op--vegetarianism and exercise
Thank you for the advice, Starfish and Pottergirl! I am very lucky that my nutritionist is a vegetarian and understands a lot about it plus has creative ideas. Once I start on solid foods, I'll post ideas here that she gives me or ones that I come up with. Right now I am drinking a lot of hot chocolate made with diet Swiss Miss and 1.5 to 2 scoops of whey Protein powder (20+ grams/protein and 100 calories). Plus I make it with soy milk for a bit more Protein. So excited to move to thin purees tomorrow!
My doctor recommends that you go off of Protein shakes once you move to full solids (6 weeks post-op for me), but as a vegetarian, I have a feeling I'll be taking at least 1 to 2 shakes a day indefinitely.

    Hi TES,
Thanks for your post. I am on day 8 post op and am also a vegetarian. I have taken off 2 weeks from work and I see why it's needed. Like you say, I don't have total mental focus just yet. I am still struggling with abdominal pain and am taking Lortab liquid just at night, otherwise getting out of bed and movin is very painful.
After leaving the hospital we are on Stage 2 of the diet, which is purée and soft foods. I admit getting Protein has been hard. I like all your veggie suggestions though. I usually have a shake (which counts as 2 meals) and then 2oz Soup with a laughing cow wedge, maybe 2 tbs Greek yogurt, and maybe 2 tbs soft Indian kitcheri (like Dahl n rice). Legumes and Beans also count as Protein but if your still being careful to only consume liquid maybe you can purée them. Protein is a challenge, but I am doing my best. I haven't heard about its being related to rapid hair loss if you don't have enough the first two weeks. The other thing I am gonna try soon is getting egg whites and making a soft scramble.

Holy cow... I made it to the 50 pounds off mark... I started 12/26 with my 2 week pre-op and had surgery 1/8...I feel great. I have lots of energy and everyone around me can see that I'm walking taller than before.

Compare the nutritional facts of PB2 to normal Peanut Butter and you'll understand why people substitute it in. Carb is not a dirty word, honestly. Too many and the wrong kinds of carbs are, but carbs are a normal part of healthy eating.

TES reacted to Lissa in does protein intake the first 2 weeks affect hair loss later on?
My hair is somewhat thinner on top than it was initially, but it's not that noticeable, IMO. I've been the model VSG patient as well, getting in my Protein, Water, and Vitamins, yet still lost hair for several months. I don't see as much loose hair in the drain these days, so I don't worry about it too much. I just follow my routine and try not to stress over anything, especially hair.

Bottom line is just follow your Drs guidelines as best as possible and just count on having Hair loss to some degree. I did it all. Protein, Biotin, Vitamins, exercise ... I was the picture of a perfect VSG patient. 6 months out, it started coming out. Like Darla, it lasted 3 months and then started coming back.
As Richard points out, it happens due to rapid weight loss. My guess is the flood of hormones contained within the fat which causes it, but again, that is merely speculation.
As TheGamer points out, I would have shaved plus a whole lot more to lose 100#. Even have 85% of my stomach removed!

TES reacted to Moosewife in FEBRUARY SLEEVERS 2013....how you doing after you've been Sleeved
Sleeved on Feb 6th. Down 13 lbs! Haven't lost in a couple days so now I'm starting to worry... LOL.... It's weird to see myself typing the same stuff that I have seen other ppl say on here. I would think, Good grief, isn't 13 enough but then when it happens to you, it's like, WTH is wrong?! I feel amazingly good! No problems at all, no pain, nausea, gas, anything. But, I am hungry. I want real food so bad. I am not allowed to eat any soft foods until 22 days post op. I really want food but I'm also worried that it will slow my weight loss when I start. Can't wait to get to goal!!!

TES got a reaction from mom2five in Leg cramps
Possibly dehydration--there has only been one day post-op when I didn't get in enough Fluid (I was sleeping due to being up late to meet a work deadline) and I paid for it with horrible foot cramps all evening and night. This was about 1.5 weeks after my surgery. I got back to an equilibrium by really focusing on drinking diluted G2 and Water (this was the first time I had G2 since the hospital and I liked it better than I thought). Also, sometimes it is a magnesium deficiency. Remember that your body needs more fluid than normal when you are losing weight.

I made sure to get all my Protein in and still had hair loss...but it stopped after about three months and grew back. It's distressing, but at least it's temporary.

Yes, I got this info from my surgeon, but after visiting my dermatologist, she said the hair loss is due to the weight loss shock to the system. I should preface that the hair loss does not happen to all and that you SHOULD make sure you get your daily protein in.

1 can black Beans, 1/2 jar salsa (I use Ariba medium), vegan shredded mozzarella (about 1/4 cup at most), and about 1 tsp lime juice. Simmer all ingredients for about 1/2 hour (to get beans mushier) - then transfer to blender to puree... I made this recipe up - it was sooo good - my husband loved it as a bean dip for the Superbowl this year too.
I also made up a guacamole dip (though it is tough not to dip it with something) - 4 really ripe avocados 1/2 jar salsa (I use Ariba medium), 1 tsp cumin, 1-2 tsp lime juice... mash together and eat or keep cool until ready

I just made vegetarian chili. I use the fantastic food mix...but I first take chopped up onions, peppers, squash, and zucchini...throw em in a frying pan with some e.v.o.l. to brown and soften. then I put it in my crock pot for a couple of hours. Sometimes I will add some greek yogurt to it for a creamier taste. I have found myself adding greek yogurt to pretty much everything.
