My doctor told me depression is normal after wls because of the hormones being released from the fat you are losing.
It should pass, so take care of yourself and know it won't be forever.

It seems to be a common occurrence. I agree with laura-ven, maybe a change up in your foods would help. I have not gone through surgery but about 4 years ago I went vegetarian cold-turkey. It was rough, I literally went from having a normal Breakfast and lunch with meat to BAM! dinner, no meat. I went nearly 9 months before I cheated and had a meat product. Let me tell you though, that first 30-60 days was the worst. It seemed like my neighbor decided to BBQ everyday, every time I went to a friends house they were cooking my favorite meat dish, and fast food smelled so amazing every time I drove by. I promise you, it gets easier, the food loss gets easier, the smells quit bothering you, and when you do end up cheating the taste and texture is completely different. The first thing I had non vegetarian was a fast food cheeseburger, my first thought was.... gross soggy cardboard. It will give you a new appreciation for the foods as you bring them back in to your diet, in a newer, healthier way in smaller portions. Hang in there.

It's a tough stage your in right now.. Its like quitting a drug habit cold turkey ( excuse the food reference ) it will get easier after the first month and you will be able to eat a bit more normally... I went through a lot of depressing moments the first month, I think a lot of us did actually.
If you are eating mashed potatoes can you eat refried Beans?? And a bit of soft cheese?
Also when I was at the stage I was allowed cream of wheat.. I bought malt o meal instead and I know this sounds weird but I made it with homemade chicken broth, not canned that stuff is gross:p most people eat malt o meal sweet but I really wanted something savory...

I recently had my surgery on March 11th. I thought I was mentally and emotionally ready for the surgery, but was sadly mistaken. I feel like I am in my own hell. I miss food! I know I had the surgery for a good reason. I have a two year old son that I would like to be able to get out and play and keep up with. Every part of me just wants to pick up some french fries and chow down but I scare myself out of it. Did I really go through all of this just to go back to my old ways? Will I ever stop missing "the good stuff". I am so tired of greek yogurt, sugar free pudding and mashed potatoes. Not to mention the funky Protein Shakes that I can get about 75% in before I am ready to barf just from the taste. I am afraid to eat too much and I don't know if I have ever reached that "full feeling". I want pizza, hot dogs and FRIES! I miss my occasional soda, coffee with caffene (sp). My dad had the surgery three weeks before mine and all of this doesn't seem to bother him. Well, if it does, he isn't telling me about it. As you can see the food is my biggest issue, obviously or I wouldn't have had the surgery. I am pleased with the weight loss, just wish it didn't come to wls to get some results. Feeling down and depressed.

I'm 5 days out, doing well physically, but emotionally, I'm not in a good place. I keep saying, "Why did I do this?!" I cry. I'm scared of the future. AND, this is NOT me. Please tell me this will pass and ill feel "good" soon. I feel like I'm not connected to this world anymore. It's sad and lonely... Help. What did you do to get out of this funk, if you had one?

sandy'ssleeve got a reaction from ProudGrammy in Today's my birthday and.....
I'm on a one hand countdown. 4 days! This preop diet is getting so old. I can't even look at pistachios anymore. On day 5 of my preop diet, my 2 year old daughter got a stomach virus. On day 8, I got the virus. I got no Protein Shakes in for 2 days because I couldn't keep it down, and I had (less than 10) saltine crackers and a small amount of Sprite. That scared me about messing up. Now it's day 10 and my husband has the virus. I am hoping my son (7 years old tomorrow) won't get it because he gets dehydrated very quickly and has to be hospitalized if he vomits too much because he has kidney disease. Today is my birthday. I had one small bite of cake and one small bite of ice cream. No sodas. Water. I am going to dring another Protein Shake and eat some berries for supper. Tomorrow, I have to go to a family lunch where my favorite meal is going to be prepared and I won't be able to eat a bite because of this stupid preop diet. I am so over this!! I am ready for Wednesday. I hope I haven't screwed up. I've lost 10 lb. on this preop diet. What do you think?

sandy'ssleeve reacted to Chris R in Bickering on threads
It's rather saddening when I'm reading threads on here and find people start bickering. I've posted elsewhere about this, but I think it deserves repeating.
Message boards, by their very nature, do not allow the reader to have the physical cues of eye contact, facial expression, or tone of voice that one has in face-to-face conversations. This can make a poster's intended tone and message easy to misinterpret. It's very important to keep this in mind when reading posts, and to give people the benefit of the doubt when you start to feel upset about something they said or the 'way' in which you felt they said it.
I honestly don't think anyone comes on here to be mean, nasty, or to try to insult people. Perhaps one person doesn't get another's sense of humor, or just misses the real point behind what someone is trying to say. But rather than letting things dissolve into nasty back-and-forth sniping that ends up getting more people upset, administrators involved, and running threads that the original posters made to honestly seek information and advice off-track, there is a simple solution. If you find that you simply don't like the way someone expresses themself on here, you can use the ignore settings. That way you don't have to ever read anything they post again. Simply click on the arrow next to your name at the top right of the screen, click on "Manage Ignore Prefs", and enter the name of that user. You can ignore their posts, signatures, and private messages. Simple solution, yes?
If you get into this kind of back and forth bickering and this solution isn't to your liking, then perhaps you should reexamine your reasons for being here...
    Just my 2 cents worth...

It is good you repented and I hope you are not feeling too miserable. It is amazing to me what very little it takes to fill me and I am only a week out. I just started with runny cream of wheat, yogurt, Soup today and could hardly do anything compared to what I was thinking. That is okay. Learning is going to be a forever journey I have a feeling, but one I am glad to undertake. Thanks for sharing your lesson with us.

Been a little depressed cuz I'm having a hard time eating. Everything Sits. So what did I do? Since before my surgery way back in my freezer was little tiny single serve cup of Ben& Jerrys choc fudge Brownie ice cream so I thought, I wanna try it. What a colossal mistake! Too much sugar and its sitting below my esophagus. It was not but 5 spoons full but after 2 I chucked it. Man what a shock to the system. I repent!

Dr. Office called and bumped me up from the 6th to the 4th. It's only a couple days but it kinda threw me for a loop. Was able to arrange work and kids schedule but I think mentally it made things feel alot more rushed then they already were. Oh well, just go with the flow.

AHHH! I am having surgery next week. NEXT WEEK! I am going to have to admit I am a little on edge. I am stressed out due to the fact my husband has been laid off from work the past few months so it was a perfect opportunity to have the surgery so he could be home to help me with our kids and he just got called back and started today. I am having surgery on wed so he is taking wed, thurs, fri off along with the weekend. I am praying I will be up to taking my daughter to school monday and take care of my 2 year old all day. It's going to be rough!

Hi Shelley. I think all if us get what you are saying. We all have gone through life not stopping or eating the wrong stuff. But YOU are strong enough to get through this. Your body does remember those feelings of glory we momentarily get from our favs! I agree I will never stay away forever but need to ensure my head will let me stop!
Make the change tonight. You are ok. If its there in the house get rid of it. Start over today!
    Good luck

Good luck to you all getting sleeved tomorrow. I was sleeved this past thursday and here's some advice from my experience:
    1. If you know you get nauseous from anesthesia or pain meds then ask for a patch or something to counter act it.
    2. Get up and walk as soon as you can....the first time I walked it was about 5 hours after surgery. Only walked to the nurses station but it was a start.
    3. I find it much easier to get into bed on your knees, then your not pulling on any of the stitches. I still do that now.
    4. Bring that extra pillow to hold over your stomach when you are moving around...it really helps
    5. Remember to take tiny sips when you can...when I saw that SF popsicle, I took too big of a bite and started salivating and dry heaving some.
    6. I don't know if others do or not, but don't panic if you vomit and see a lot of brown stuff. It's the dry blood from surgery. This happened to me the first night at home. You will probably see some of it with your first BM also
    7. First day at home, I found it helped me to take a tiny sip, walk around the house then come back and take another sip. It definitely gave time for the liquid to move through my tiny stomach to be able to accept more.
