Michigan Lap Band Support Groups
I would lov to know more aboout how other Michigan Lap Band Support Groups are run, how often they are held, is there an agenda, newsletter, staff attendance...any other info you can give. Thanks! Nancy Left this on "eastside bandsters - MI" yahoo group: I have been subscribing to your group for a while; but this is my first time posting. I was banded on 9/24/04 by Dr. Hawasli at St. John Hospital in Detroit. Our Support Group meets every third Wednesday of the month. I am just curious how all support groups run their group. Maybe we can learn something new. We had 13 people at our meeting this week and it was a great meeting!!! Also wanted to let you know if you didn't know already about the June 25, 2005 1st Annual Michigan "Bandstock" in Sterling Heights. It's being organized by a few of us from the www.lapbandtalk.com website, in case some of you go to that site. My name there is "NancySmiles" It's an awesome website too! More details will follow as soon as we have them We had a meeting scheduled for today but canceled due to snow. Take care and nice to meet all of you! Nancy*

Dysfunctional Beginnings and Trigger Foods
This is a great thread Leatha! I agree that nobody likes to talk about this subject because it dredges up a lot of hurt feelings and memories. My family wasn't "dysfunctional" ...we're Polish!!! Pierogi, Kapusta, Kielbasa, Golabki, Nalesniki, etc. etc.....And we all come from the "clean your plate" generation!!! I feel so great now that I am finally able to push the plate away!...of course it's usually pretty full these days....but it's a great feeling!!! Nancy*

Awesome Hi-Protein/Low-Carb/Hi-Fiber Foods/Site!!!
Awesome Hi-Protein/Low-Carb/Hi-Fiber Foods/Site!!! I was in Walgreens a while back and picked up a lone can of KETO Hot Cereal - Old Fashioned oatmeal. The reason it caught my eye was because, not only does it have 3g of net carbs, it also has 9g of Fiber, and 17g of protein!!! In Diabetic Exchanges, one serving = 2 vegetables and 2 lean meat exchanges. And, best of all, it tastes great! Their website was shown on the package, and there are tons of products....and it also lists the nutritional information. There is probably a location near you!!! Check it out....you will love it!!! Great way to get in the extra Protein and fiber without the high carbs. www.keto.com Nancy* :banana

Ever have a fill dissipate/dissolve???
I agree Becky! I have been trying to get back on track too. I didn't do too badly but was upset with myself for "giving in" to a few temptations. I was so "psyched" before then....and "focused".....so I am surprised I let it get to me. What I did was start at "Day 1" literally - took out my post-op instructions and started with liquids for a couple days, then moved to the slightly mushy for a couple, then gradually built myself up to the solid foods....did this in the period of a week and seem to be doing better now....kinda took off the edge.... I think the "sensible bandster eating plan" is the best idea yet! I have subscribed to a couple bandster magazines and also bought a few books....and it helps.....and also, of course, with the help of all you AWESOME people on this site!!! We can do it!! We have no choice but to succeed!!! And we have to remember that the band is not MAGIC...it's a "TOOL" to help us back to a healthy lifestyle! Nancy*

How many cc's with first fill?
My doc said he normally puts in 1cc on the first...then a 1/2cc on those after that. After my first fill it took about 5-6 days for me to feel more restriction....not sure why but I have read other posts with same issues.....good luck!

Compulsive Eating
I can DEFINITELY relate!!! Usually I wasn't "hungry"....just looking for "something"...not sure what.....and grabbed the first thing that wasn't moving!! Not sure why we do it....if we knew we'd be thin and rich!!! But, according to the Cambridge dictionary, the definition for "compulsive" is: "(adjective) doing something a lot and unable to stop doing it: a compulsive liar/thief/eater, compulsive gambling, a compulsive eating disorder. (adverb) too much and in a way that shows you are unable to stop: She exercises/cleans/works compulsively." If only we could do as the adverb does in a POSITIVE way....exercising, cleaning, working compulsively...instead of eating compulsively.....!!! And used as a noun (compulsion): "compulsion (DESIRE) a very strong or uncontrollable desire (to do something repeatedly): For many people, dieting is a compulsion. [sentence] I seem to have a constant compulsion to eat. I suppose any COMPULSIVE behavior is not good. We just need to find a middle ground.....and when we do, let each other know about it.....but I think the closest we've come to it is by being banded.....not a miracle cure....but the greatest "tool" they've invented since the fork!!!...the root of all our evils....heck...we don't even need a fork half the time!!! Who invented that darned thing anyway??? But maybe now we can use the fork for good and not evil...for healthy and nutritious "compulsive behavior". Thanks for the memories Jonathan.....Good luck to all on our journey to a new life!!! Nancy*

Ever have a fill dissipate/dissolve???
Thanks everyone! So I did hear correctly ? I was trying to remember what the doc said and hope it made sense. So, from what I am reading, I should have had the air removed first. I'm just glad it's not unusual and that it does happen now and then. Will have to do more reading. Thanks Michelle for the quotes...and everyone else too! N*

Ever have a fill dissipate/dissolve???
My question to you is whether or not anyone here has had this happen to them in between fills. Ever have the saline dissipate, dissolve, leak, disappear....etc...etc....??? Makes me curious now. I know the saline is safe and can't harm you; but I was just wondering. Here's what happened: I went to the surgeon today for my 2nd fill, which was supposed to be 1/2cc. I scheduled one because since the day after Christmas I have been hungry between meals and was not satisfied with the amount of food i was used to eating. The doctor said I was losing steadily, and have not gained, but had not lost as much as he would like since 12/1/04; but was still losing. Anyway, when he inserted the needle, he withdrew the last fill that I had on 11/8/04 and almost all of it was gone. He showed me in the needle how much was left and said it happens occasionally; dissipates or leaks out of the port, etc. so he filled the full cc again and said to watch my weight loss and the usual thing (if you lose 1-2 pounds a week, then call me in 3 months; but if you haven't, call to schedule another 1/2cc fill). Anyone have this happen??? TIA!! Nancy*

Anyone have LOW THYROID (TSH) numbers since banding???
I did have my TSH checked just before Christmas and waiting to hear results. Haven't heard anything so far, and they usually call if it's abnormal. I left a message today. I probably should have waited tp hear to post this; but am curious too. Researching it myself till I hear....

Anyone have LOW THYROID (TSH) numbers since banding???
I've been wondering if anyone else has this problem. There were a few of us who asked about this and is there any truth to this? I take the Brand name Synthroid, but heard that if you take the generic (which is supposed to be the same) then it affects your TSH level or other Thyroid lab tests. Has anyone or their doctors mentioned this at all? Nancy

LAP BAND SUPPORT GROUP The next Eastside Surgical Specialists, P.C., Lap Band Support Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 6:30pm. Please note the location change for this meeting. It will be held at the City of Grosse Pointe Woods Courtroom, which is located in the same building as the Police & Fire Department, City Offices and the Community Center. They are in one huge building on Mack, set back off the road, between Moross (7 Mile Rd.) and Vernier (8Mile Rd.). The Court is at the rear of the building on the North Side (Vernier Rd. side). From Vernier: The court is on the right as you drive towards Moross. From Moross: The court is on the left as you approach Vernier. Enter the complex off Mack on the North side (Vernier Rd. side).
