    Water tricks

the first thing I do when I get up in the morning, before drinking my coffee, is have 16-oz of non-carbonated, non-caffeinated fluids (for me, that means bottle of Bai (or similar flavored water)). I've been doing that for about five years. Doing that right off the bat has helped me meet my goal by the end of the day.

    Chewing makes food dry

I’m 4 weeks post op and am struggling with getting food wet enough to swallow without feeling stuck. If I start with something that is moist, like tuna with mayo, by the time I have chewed it, all the mayo seems to be gone and I’m left with very dry chewed up tuna that is hard to swallow. Lately I have been eating food in a bit of cream soup, like a soft boiled egg in a tbsp of cream soup or broth. Then when I’m ready to swallow, I add a wee bit of the soup to hep it go down. Not sure if this is cheating or not. If I chew less it doesn’t get as dry but it’s too chunky for me. Do I need to go back to chewing school? 😂

I have a friend who every picture I send her she comments on how thin I look. Sometimes it’s like ok thank you but I’m not concerned about the thinness I need advice on if i should buy this pair of jeans! 😂. I know she means well, though. I think some people in our lives are just so struck by a he physical change they don’t get over it for some time.

    Day 3...figuring it out

I have issues with this too. My husband has to remind me to slow down. He makes a joke and says no one is going to take your food. Lol. It’s really hard to slow down though. Thankfully for me it doesn’t cause pain to eat fast. I just want to slow down so I feel more satisfied with my little bit of food. Perhaps if your alone you could set a timer to go off ever so often as a reminder to slow down.

    Chewing makes food dry

I totally get what you mean ClareLynn! I feel the exact same about tuna, and I think that’s why it didn’t (and still doesn’t at 4 months po) sit well in my stomach. I‘ve tried mixing it with avocado and a little bit of mayo instead of just mayo and that did help a little in keeping it more moist, but not enough for me to want to keep eating it, so I’m not sure that’ll help. But at least now you know you’re not alone! 😄

    Nervous

It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it! We went out of town with friends and had several large cookouts while I was on my pre op. It was not easy, but taught me self control. I just kept super busy. When everyone was cooking I helped cook and clean up so that I would constantly be moving. I had my own “food” and ate that while others ate theirs. You can do this! Just keep thinking about the rewards that you are working towards! Good luck!

Spicy food on healing stomach: not a super great idea Spicy food once stomach is healed a few months later- give it a try, you’ll probably be fine. I eat spicy food the same way I did pre-op. No problems here. But I was always in the “medium to low heat” category, so ymmv. In my defense my 23 and me test confirmed that my ancestors basically just sat around eating unseasoned salted fish in Scandinavia for generations, so comparatively I’m pretty adventurous. 😬

Thank you all for the thought out replies, I truly appreciate it. I understand that I shouldn't have taken the cheap route, but I didn't have 25k laying around to get the surgery done in the U.S. With that said, I talked to a few friends who used the same surgeon within the last year or so and they all said great things about him and they averaged close to 1 pounds lost per day for the first 60 days. That definitely was what lured me in since I've been trying to lose weight for almost a decade now and I always rebound. For the record, I don't have heartburn. He just prescribed it to me "in case" I get heartburn in the morning or at night. It's just a preventative. My second phase is week 3 and 4, and it involves a "Full fluid" diet; basically a clear liquid diet but I do get to have some other things like sugar substitutes, fat free yoghurt, fat free custard, and fat free creamy soups (no chunks). I also got a visit from him and the nutritionist post-op where they explained what kind of lifestyle changes I have to make now that it's done (chewing a lot, exercice more regularly, portion control, etc.) so it's not like they're completely irresponsible; it's just that they don't see it as a major op and told me that as long as I don't cheat and follow through with all phases, I would be good. It's easy for us Americans to judge their actions, but at the end of the day I did it in a country where the medical field is more advanced than what we have and I truly believe that we make it difficult because insurance companies wanna bill you the most for everything and obesity + overconsumption is seen as benefitial to the economy. Pureed food is for week 5 and 6. This is where I get to have some protein, 45-50grams a day split up between 6 small meals(1 boiled egg, 1 cup of fat free milk, 30grams of soft cheese or low fat cheese, 1 can of tuna in water drained). Weeks 7 and 8 is soft foods and then after 2 months its solid foods but maximum of 8 spoonfuls per meal. I guess I should just go ahead and say that I did it in Israel, so if you have any doubts on the quality of healthcare over there; know that it's in the top 10 whereas the US is in the bottom 48. I hope this works out well, will keep you updated! Sent from my SM-N970U using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you for that feedback. I think we subconsciously take bigger sips than we can tolerate right now. I actually love water and since surgery, I crave it.
