Hi there! I had my 2 month follow up and my NUT told me that she knew someone that went vegan and it made their eczema flair ups to nothing! I'm considering it but... I'm allergic to nuts (tree and peanuts.) In fact, my current flair up is because I was eating protein bars not knowing they were full of nuts. I'm going vegetarian anyway because Meat doesn't sit right at the moment. I know beans are like protein magic but you can only have so much. Also what about probiotics? Is there a vegan version? I looked to see if there was a thread created for healthy vegan/vegetarian recipes. I didn't see any on the first page, so I created one here. Notice I noted HEALTHY...because we all know there are unhealthy ways of eating vegan/vegetarian diet. We can share our meals and pics (if you have any) with all those who are looking to follow a whole foods plant based diet. Happy sharing ya'll! Don't forget to follow the thread!!!

http://gamechangersmovie.com/ I haven't seen it yet-- I'm not sure it's out yet actually, but Dr. Greger mentioned it on his Facebook page and said this is the best and most evidence-based vegan documentary he's seen yet! James Cameron is the executive producer and it also features Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think this is going to be HUGE! And hopefully reach a ton of people to get them eating the healthiest diet! ??????

I follow him on FB. Asked him about why bariatric pre and post-op diets are so heavy with animal fat and protein, and what physiological benefits that has. He actually answered me. "None. No benefit. Just baseless dogma." His new book Proteinaholic arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to read it!

Tomorrow I will be 4 weeks out and can eat whatever I am able to. What were you eating at 4 weeks? Are there veggies that are easier to tolerate? When did you start eating lettuce? Raw veggies? When did you start tolerate quinoa and grains? My Dr is pretty sold on very low carbs and limited plant based proteins so they want patients to focus on animal proteins. How long did you take protein shakes? Sorry for so many questions. I really want to be plant based and am craving veggies. Thanks!!

I know this was mentioned before here in the Vegans/Vegetarians forums and I wanted to maybe start this thread for all things pertaining to the book that Dr. Garth Davis authored, Proteinaholic. So far I'm on chapter 6 of it and I'm just amazed with how sound it is and all the studies that are out there to support why we don't need such a high amount of protein, and why it's a culprit of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.... There's just so much to talk about if anyone wants to get into discussion. Now, this thread IS NOT going to be for debate. I do not want anyone coming on here advocating high protein and what they "know" and debating with any of us who a…

I am three months post op, in an effort to eat less meat I bought some Field Roast patties. I just read the label and realize they are made from Vital Wheat Gluten. I'm not supposed to eat bread products and I assume it's the wheat or gluten in it that's not good for the Sleeved tummy. Would eating these be the same as eating a bread product?

Has anyone tried this kind? I just ordered a sample kit that includes the three flavors of Veggie Elite protein powder plus a shaker bottle and a few other vegan products from MRM. I paid $10 for shipping but the kit was free, which is nice. I read good reviews on a bodybuilding website that this was the best tasting vegan powder and wasn't as gritty as some of the others. It's made with pea and brown rice protein and is sweetened with stevia. I hope the samples come quickly as I'll probably be starting my liquid diet in 2-3 weeks and want to get some products ordered soon! I do have a bunch of Premier Protein which I will happily use if needed (I want to survive, w…

Hello guys, so I had surgery September 1 2017. I am currently under no food restrictions other than eating slow and no drinking while eating. I've noticed as I've introduced certain foods back that some really cause issues for me like all dairy products and occasionally meat. I was wondering if any one else has had similar diet issues and what they are doing/ is anyone vegan or vegetarian after surgery and is it helping? My fear is getting enough nutrients and food for fuel during the day. Thanks in advance for the help!

The more I've been learning about fruit the more I want to make it a part of pretty much every meal, as well as having regular servings of whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, etc. I'm having gastric bypass so there's a greater risk of dumping syndrome. I'm wondering if these healthy but carb-y foods also cause dumping, or if it's mostly just refined sugars and high-fat foods. I'm particularly interested in your particular experiences rather than what we might assume should/shouldn't cause dumping. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Found these today on the website. There's a list of stores that they say will ship on request. No Beef & No Chicken flavored broth/soup base. The vegetable broth is delicious! Can't wait to try these. Will be great for pre-op post-op & liquid diets. http://www.betterthanbouillon.com/products/default.aspx?catid=3

Hello. I'm just starting my bariatric journey with an informational seminar and an appointment to see the surgeon. I have been vegan (98%) for two years. I'd like to know if I can home make protein shakes with tofu, peanut butter, soy milk, etc., instead of buying powders with nasty ingredients and nasty flavors. Unless someone knows of an actually great-tasting vegan protein shake to stock up on? Thanks!

Hello all! I'm 4 days post gastric bypass surgery and wondering if anyone has any ideas for VEGAN (not vegetarian) foods to include in my diet. Preferably something I can buy at a 'regular' store like Meijer and requires very little prep. I have the Cream of Wheat, oatmeal, grits, veggie broth, and a very nice carrot ginger soup. (SO disappointed I can't find sugar free vegan pudding...) Thanks!

My doctor is requiring every patient to purchase bariatric advantage meal replacement powder. From what I've read it has why protein in it. My team knows I am vegan. I'm going to call my dietician, she's just not very informative on a vegan diet. I have read about many protien powders that are vegan but i don't think they are the same as a meal replacement powder. I also have stomach issues when I eat dairy. I'm not sure if the whey protein would affect me the same way. Does anyone know of specifically a meal replacement powder? Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

My Dr. still wants me to use bariatric advantage meal replacement for pre-op after explaining I'm vegan and milk products don't agree with me. I am vegan and when I drink milk products they upset my stomach. Has anyone else dealt with this or discussed it with there doctor? If so can you tell me what they suggested you to use instead of the bariatric advantage meal replacement? I am afraid that the whey protein expressed from milk will upset my stomach.

I am currently monitoring my macronutrients on myfitnesspal. I'm able to get the correct amount of protein. I am finding it hard to make sure I get under the fat and carb goals. I think it may be due to the fact that besides eating veggies, alot of beans and legumes contain carbs as well? We usually eat tofu, tempeh, black beans, and chickpeas consistently every week. And have the occasional sweety potato so they are better sources of carbs. I understand I will have to cut back even more on bread, pasta, and those types of carbs. That won't be hard for me. I eat hot dogs and burgers without buns. I found an extensive list of vegan protein products and how much is in ea…

Hello, My surgeon and his team basically have prescribed a vegan based diet following bariatric surgery. I was sleeved on 03/01/16 and have been following this diet as much as I can. I am struggling somewhat but wanted to know how others have done on this type of diet. I have been vegetarian before -throughout my teenage years, but as of late I find myself wanting to be completely raw. Not sure if that's due to it already reaching 100 degrees in Texas or if it's me being lazy. Any one else in the same boat? Thank you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

So I have had gastric bypass and I seen this 'Forks over knives' documentary and wanted to try this new plant based lifestyle. I have researched and those who have done this had weight loss success and overall improvement in health. The lifestyle consist of a purely plant based diet that removes all animal based products. So no eggs, no animal milk (soy milk is used to replace it), no animal fats, and they even say no processed foods. My concern was how I would be able to get in my protein, I know beans are a wonder and I love black beans. Has anyone tried this lifestyle change? I would like to give it a week or two and see if I feel a difference.

Happy new year to everyone! Like others who've posted on this forum, I want to move towards a more plant-based diet. For my, my goal is hopefully to return to being mostly vegan (I've gotten re-hooked on cheese, ugh!) There aren't many of us out there, and we are constantly subjected to misinformation -- even criticism -- about how we "need" to eat animals products regularly. So here's the challenge: pick one day a week and post on this thread on that day EVERY WEEK until Valentine Day. Post more if you want; once a week S the minimum. Post about anything you want -- what you ate that day, what you wish you'd eaten, something funny your cat did...anything g…

So I saw my nutritionist for the first meeting pre op. She said I eat very healthy for a vegan/vegetarian but she wants me to do a protein bar and shake every day to get me to 80grams a day before surgery so I can get used to it. Only issue I'm having is now I don't feel hungry ever and I feel like I'm forcing myself to eat to get the protein in. Is it really necessary for me to be eating so much? I am wondering if there are other vegetarians/vegans who are getting or have gotten sleeved? I was sleeved 04/18/2016 and found the process a little more difficult because I am a vegetarian. I am also a nurse and thought that it would be a good research project. I would love some input and anything that I use would be kept anonymous. The direction that I am heading with this is to provide a guide for pre and post op vegetarian eating with the gastric sleeve. Feel free to answer me on this board and I will give you contact information. Maybe this can benefit someone you know who is getting the sleeve and is having trouble knowing what they can and cannot eat. Micah

Hi, my surgery is July 20th! Of course I'm on the liquid pre-op diet now and will be on liquid right after surgery. But what vegetarian soft foods did those that are post eat? I'm trying to plan ahead. I don't want to purée foods-that totally grosses me out. I would mash legumes but that's about it and I'm not sure if that's even ok? Wondering if anyone has a go to list of soft high Protein foods they could share? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Since surgery, I have been less and less interested in eating meat. I'd like to say that vegetarianism appeals to me because I'm some kind of humanitarian, but really I just feel increasingly disgusted with the thought of dead animal flesh even though I've always been a huge meat eater. I find that occasionally my body requires actual meet but most of the time, I'm OK without it. I get much of my Protein from cheese, a little from yogurt, and the occasional egg. All of the dishes I know how to prepare feature meet as the main attraction. That's not true: Pasta is the other main attraction. I'm getting quite bored with my staple foods, I need some super simple supe…

Not to far in the past I was a die hard vegan because of a significate emotional event I had involving animals. I got over the depression but I'm still passionate about animals so I stay in contact with animal right groups. PETA just put out a large list of vegan Protein mixes with ratings. Breakfast is the meal I struggle with everyday. I need suggestions. My NUT has told me to move on from shakes (11 weeks post op). Every morning I feel like toast. But if I eat a piece of toast, it sets me off on a bad road for the day where I crave carb/snack foods all day. I need high protein/low carb suggestions. What do you eat for breakfast?

http://proteinartist.com/2014/07/seitan-scallion-stir-fry-26-grams-protein/ I can't believe how simple this was to make. Just mix the flour with the water, and stir fry. What a delightful concept! I would so rather eat 2 ounces of this than slurp/burp down a chalky protein shake.

Right now I only eat poultry and tuna for meat. The only reasons I haven't already gone completely vegetarian are that I haven't quite figured out how to get in all my protein without meat, and my boyfriend pretty much eats the same things that I eat and I don't want to force him to go vegetarian (also, he is not a fan of veggies. he will eat some, but not happily). Has anyone dealt with these dilemmas? I know there are plenty of choices for plant-based proteins, but maybe seeing some examples of meals will help ease the anxiety a little. What are some things you make for vegetarian meals? Especially meals that can be made for both of us and I can add meat to his and not …

I had the gastric bypass surgery back in may of 2012 and 6 months after that i got pregnant with my son. After i had him i kept all the same eating habits as i did when i was pregnant. I gained about 45 pounds back and now i am struggling to get back on track. The dr gave me a 5 day pouch test I failed it because i got so hungry that i had to eat. I feel disappointed in myself. I also quit because I was eating meat and poultry and eggs and it was just nauseating to me. I am not a big meat eater. I need help with any tips you can give me because i want to do this again but with less meat and possibly something vegan I can do. Plz help me anyone......

I am sharing my wonderful recipe make-overs with BariatricPal that I originally published on HealthCentral Obesity, a health news and information site similar to WebMD. These are the recipes that have helped me to be successful in maintaining my weight loss from bariatric surgery in 2003. These include delicious Protein shakes - some of which taste even better than the delicious fat and sugar-laden Frappucinos at Starbucks, protein bars that are far more healthy and affordable than those you buy online/in-store, and awesome recipe-makeovers of foods you love but are no longer part of a bariatric life food plan. I had WLS in December, 2014 - 4 months ago. My pre-surgical starting weight was 259 lbs. This excess weight came from eating too much (volume), rather than the wrong foods or junk foods. I'm not vegetarian however I have always incorporated a lot of raw food habits into my diet. To those who are not familiar with "eating raw" - I'm not talking about crudités or peeling a banana and eating it. I'm taking about "raw" lifestyle foods like breads, crackers, wraps and veggie burgers that have been created using nuts, seeds, flax, hemp and vegetables, often in a dehydrator. Before my surgery, I incorporated a lot of raw cuisine into my diet and used my dehydrator constant…
