Patty(I dont know how to post right under the article im referring to), what about the two tax credits Bush gave, I believe $600.00 each to each working American. He said they where to help stimulate the economy. Then awhile after, the news reports said people didnt spend, they paid off debt.

Bill Oreilly supports the swiss plan which is choice of private insurers or the government "socialized" plan. They have both and get to choose. He said the Swiss plan works very well.

What about them? All I can say is Obama could see that that doesn't work. Giving people money does NOT stimulate anything. Someone has to pay that money back.

In our country, the government plan would not be making any profits, and therefore would be the lowest and best ins. for anyone. Because at first fewer would be on it, it would cover your needs and be a great price, and even free for some. But, over time, many companies will choose to put their employees on it because it will be less costly for them. Every time one company switches to the gov. plan, the less people there are on private plans, and therefore, they will have to raise their premiums even more to cover their losses. Eventually, the cost of private ins will cause everyone to turn to the gov. run plan. Now the gov. run plan has everyone on it and there is no more private ins. companies out there. How is that getting a choice? Now that the gov. has everyone on their plan and the nation is socialized medically, they will be the ones controlling your medical decisions instead. What's the difference who makes those decisions? The private ins. companies or the government? The difference is that with the government being your only option, there is no discussion or other place to turn.

Well if that is what it takes for us to get universal health care in America, then it's fine by me. I just don't agree that the picture you paint is anything we can count on.

It's been so long since Americans didn't have insurance coverage to cover all health care costs, people have forgotten what it is like to just pay as you go for your doctor visits and simple medications. If we had kept that system, insurance coverage simply to cover catastrophic health care costs, things wouldn't have become so convoluted in the U.S.

It has taken since the 50s for our health care system to become the hideous monster that it is today. Now you have to pay through the nose for coverage that is controlled by people who stand to make money if they deny you coverage. How good is that for your health?

loserbob, we have the kind of coverage in our company that you talk about - where you must have 4 or more employees to get group coverage. But they still won't insure my husband and me.

Studying successful health care systems that other countries have would be a good thing. But Americans are so afraid of "socialized medicine" they are not open to any meaningful solution, much less something that might be universal in nature.

And you have the insurance companies to thank. They have our legislators in their pockets and they never miss a beat putting out a load of crap when a plan is being discussed that doesn't include them making billions of dollars off us.

Because countries that have universal, single payer, government run healthcare love it. They shake their head in disbelief at how a country like ours doesn't. How is that getting a choice? Now that the gov. has everyone on their plan and the nation is socialized medically, they will be the ones controlling your medical decisions instead. What's the difference who makes those decisions? The difference is that you have an elected congressman and two elected senators. If you aren't happy with how the government plan is being run, then you call them. They don't want their re-election to be affected by constituents unhappy with their medical plan. You know their names. And they are answerable to you. But with private insurance, they are NOT answerable to you. They answer to the stockholders. And if your health insurance is through your employer (as most people's is) then you don't have a choice to change insurance companies. And BTW - those receiving the government run medicare are happier with their plan than those on private plans. The private ins. companies or the government? The difference is that with the government being your only option, there is no discussion or other place to turn.
Where do people covered through work turn now? Quit their job and buy their own policy? :w00t:

patty was speaking hypothetically I believe when she said: "Now that the gov. has everyone on their plan and the nation is socialized medically, they will be the ones controlling your medical decisions instead. What's the difference who makes those decisions?"

Huh? You're saying that we might have a choice between the government offering us insurance to cover our medical care and private insurers?

Why would anyone choose private insurers if they had the choice? Private insurance companies are motivated to keep us from getting any kind of medical treatment or medications so that they can continue to make billions and billions of dollars.

The government would not be similarly motivated. They are motivated to help the people in this country be as healthy as possible. We're all taxpayers and pay into the system and besides if we all die from inadequate health care, there will be no government.

It's a no brainer. If you want us to believe that you can't see that, then it seems more like you just aren't being honest. I've read your posts and you seem intelligent enough to understand what is very uncomplicated logic about motivation and self-interest.

I think you're just on the Republican bandwagon - the party of NO! The obstructionist party. The party that the insurance companies can depend on.

Exactly. If the government ran health care it would take the profit out of healthcare. Can you imagine the billions and billions that would save us? It's staggering to think that anyone would support a for-profit, greed motivated private insurance industry that is destroying our healthcare in this country and shutting out millions of people.

The government would not be similarly motivated. They are motivated to help the people in this country be as healthy as possible. We're all taxpayers and pay into the system and besides if we all die from inadequate health care, there will be no government.

There's a few DINO's in that group, too, that we need to get rid of. To that end a progressive democrat is running against DINO Blanche Lincoln in the primary. I may contribute to his campaign.

DINO = Democrat In Name Only- Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, Bart Stupak, etc.. and many of the blue dog democrats.

When the republicans keep saying that the democrats have the majority, they forget about these guys, not to mention that the democrats traditionally don't vote like they all share one brain, like the republicans do.

BIG BIG ENORMOUS DIFFERENCE!!!!

Private insurance companies.......how to get the biggest profits.

Government insurance.......how to best provide the best care for all.

Pretty straight forward.

Your fear of evil socialism is clouding your thinking and allowing you to be a pawn of big business.

Right Devana!

Cleo's you're so politically savvy. I have to keep my political leanings covert. I'd get thrown out of the neighborhood if my friends here found out how progressive I am. It's frustrating and exhausting trying to keep a lid on it.

People in my neighborhood know me as the lady with the political signs in her yard at election time. I have to counter my right-wing next door neighbor with his signs - although he didn't have any for the 2008 presidential election. I don't think McCain was far right enough for him.

Patty I see it differently(go figure ha). If the government has a plan that is cheaper with high quality(I dont care if others go out of business)I dont believe the others will go out of business, I think theyll have to lower prices to compete, not raise. I think now they tell you they would have to raise to scare you, theyre already raising anyway. And if they cant compete, theyll close down and someone else(smaller, more competitive)will take their place. Thats most of the problem, these companies get to big and dominating. I think it would create more competition. You would have many smaller, more able to be competitive companies, without the overhead of a big business. If you only had 1 or 2 gas stations, gas would be alot higher. There are many out there. If you look at prices of gas the stations always try to stay under the next guy, theres usually a 1 cent difference and most people will drive across the street to save the 1 cent per gallon.

Cleosmom, Ive found that most of the people out our way are rep rednecks. I was at a plumbing supply warehouse in Greensburg yesterday, Another plumber came in and was teasing the guy working there saying"see, I told you not to vote for that chimp", I bit my tongue on that one.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
