Type 2 Diabetes ... how's that working for you?

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with A-Typical Type 2 Diabetes in January of 2007. I was feeling really sick, exhausted, and all the other symptoms. I finally went to the doctor and was immediately sent to the emergency room. My blood sugar was 917. I left the hospital 4 days later with insulin and metformin. Within a week I was taking only a third of what I was originally prescribed and off insulin within a month. Ultimately, I was taking 1000 mg of Metformin 2 X a day. Even that got to be a little too much and I went to 500 in the morning and 1000 at night. Anyway, I called my endo a couple of days after my surgery and he said I could stop taking metformin asap. I waited about a month and a half to stop completely. I continue to check my blood sugar and it has been very good since I was about 20 lbs down.

Here's my issue, - and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this - my blood sugar has been too low on a number of occasions since I stopped taking my meds. It usually happens when I change my diet to lose more weight. My numbers aren't crazy low (low 70's to 80), but I don't feel well at all when I am in the 70's (never did) and I get really shaky. Anyone else experiencing low blood suger after being in "diabetic remission"?

My internist took me off all my meds starting the day of surgery and happily I've never needed to go back to them.

He discussed with me the post-op regular diet. Told me that I would need to include some carbs and to test my blood sugar until I got comfortable with a "happy medium" of how much works for me.

My hba1c was 6.8 last time (a month ago). I'm still losing so it will continue to drop for a while. I eat no specific carbs in the morning. I have 15 grams of carbs (1 carb exhcange on the old diabetic exchange) with my lunch (usually some whole grain crackers) and maybe as much as 30 grams with my dinner. No low blood sugar events so far.

Pre-Operative period : was horrible for me, I was trying to titrate my Lantus from 160-180 units which I took every night based on my morning blood sugar.

The first week on medifast my sugars were 90 to 120. I was shakey, poor concentration, headache and just grumpy. By the second week, I felt great because my body adjusted. By 2 weeks from surgery, I was totally off my Lantus. The only meds that I took was a Multivitamin & Calcium. (prior to this my blood sugars were uncontrolled ranging from 250 & up)

Post-operative period : I was banded 10/29. Presently, I am 4 days post-op and my sugars are in the 80's to 90's. I feel great in that aspect.

My concerns now is dealing with the gas discomfort & learning to understand my lap band. Today is a not so good day for me but I know that tomorrow will be better.

Sheri,

I got my band on 10/27 and I feel your pain. But it's true that it gets better every day. I just went back to work today. As for the gas pains, today was the first day without the constant growling!

I was wondering this too! I was on 1500 Metformin and 100 Januvia before the surgery. Right now I am only taking 500mg of Riomet (liquid Metformin) a day and I'm doing fine. Most of the time when I test I'm at 90-110. I can't believe it! I haven't lost that much weight, and even when I tried to "eat right" before it never kept my numbers this low. I'm curious, but definitely not complaining! lol

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
