Any one band at 200 lbs - Im wondering if this is right for me?

Recommended Posts

Megster,

I will be a self pay patient - would you mind telling me at Baptsist if you had to self pay or did insurance cover? If you were self pay would you mind sharing howmuch it cost at Baptist. I have been dealing with Centennial and it's really high.

I had the surgery on July 15th. I started at 190. I have had three fills and only lost five pounds so far in the two and a half months Ive been banded. I did lose 10 pounds pre-op too for a total of 15 pounds. For a lot of low BMI patients its harder. I still have fifty pounds to lose. I dont have proper restriction yet so Im hoping that once I get there the weight will come off faster. My Dr does fills really modestly to avoid over filling and he only allows them every three weeks. Its killing me having such slow weight loss after surgery, but I still believe I will be successful once my restriction is correct. Even though I was only 50 pounds over weight, I still needed the band and am happy I did it. I had been over weight for 8 years and tried so hard so many times to get it off myself. I look forward to a lifetime of health now in my future. If you do deside to get banded, prepare yourself that your weight-loss might be slower than average since you are going into it with less weight than average to lose.

I am considering this procedure ( after a life time of diets ) at 185.

Chrissee,

I am considering this too, but really think I'm too scared to do it. I am your same weight. About 190 at the moment. Maybe we could chat - In a perfect world I would love to just do it on my own. When I see everyone averaging around 1 pound a week I just want to make myself to it on my own. As a self pay if something went wrong I don't know how I would pay for it.

Fianlly, someone I can relate to! I also weigh 200 Lbs. and have been to a seminar and also to a one on one discussion about the lapband. This isn't counting the times I have talked to the co-ordinator on the phone. I have been going back and forth with this decision for about 2 months now and still can't seem to make up my mind to do it.

I guess I can't even wrap my mind around the concept of never eating bread again or giving in to my sweet tooth.

I am also going to be self-pay and with a cost of $16,000 that's just a lot to think about the way things are today.

I talked to the co-ordinator right before I logged on here and she was laughing at me (in a nice way) because I said that 1 cup of food is nothing let alone 1/3 cup. I am having a hard time imagining only eatting that much!!

I wish you luck on your decision, let us know what you decide to do. Maybe your decision will be an influence on me.:confused:

I think I am going to devote from now until the end of the year to losing 1 lbs a week and see if I can do it. It's a lifestyle change either way. If insurance was paying - there would be no decision but I too will have to pay about $16K. That's a big amount of money if I were to have an emergency. Maybe we could keep checking back and I'll post my progress! If I can lose at least one pound a week I would be amost 15 pounds thinner by Christmas. I may even shoot for 2 pounds a week - if I were able to do that I would be almost 30 pounds thinner.

Maybe you guys could help motivate me!!!!!!! If it doesn't work I'll just bite the bullet and have the band the 1st of the year. It still gives me six months of banding until summer.

I'm scheduled for 10-29 but so many people say that I don't weigh enough. I really want to hear from those who are at our size.

Please comments welcome.

Ask them what's 'enough'?

I wish lap banding was around when I was 200 pounds and 35 years younger. I would've done it in a heartbeat because all I had to do was look as far as my mom and her aunts to see where I was going to be in 30 years (despite repeated dieting)...and I am.

I was banded Oct 3rd

I'm 5"7 was 195 prior to the surgery.

I'm excited!

I know I will take longer to lose but it's on me not the Lapband!

Don't forget it's a tool not magic!

Keep your protien high & carb low you will see results.

Don't forget to work out too!

I had my surgery on Nov. 20, 2008. I weighed 213 lbs. (size 16) and I am now at 160 lbs. (size 8/10).

The lapband has changed my life because I am no longer a yo-yo dieter. The weight loss has been slower than I anticipated, but it has been a blessing.

Good luck!

I was banded on July 20th 2009. My start weight on first appt with clinic I was at 234 lbs in April. I decided to start dieting on that date. On surgery day I was 209lbs. I am now at 177 lbs. I would still do this in a heart beat. My insurance paid for the surgery. I know I could not do this myself and keep it off. In the past I had lost 80lbs but put it all back on plus 3lbs. It is work but what I wanted.

I was banded on August 17th and I'm only 5'1" and weighed 200 pounds. My insurace covered everything including my fills for the first year.

The only co-morbidity that I had when I first went to my consultation was high blood pressure that was under control with Water pills so it wasn't that bad. I had bloodwork that was done and it came out that I was pre-diabetic (no pills prescribed).

I'm surprised that I was approved since my BMI was below 40 but I was and I don't regret one day. I've tried diets in the past (even went on a liquid diet for 9 months) and gained all the weight that I lost plus more back, so I would have tried anything.

The weight seems to be coming off slow, and I still don't have much restriction but I think that I will hit my goal before the first year is up.

I was banded in June 2008. I weighed a little over 210 and I'm 5'4. I've lost over 55 lbs so far. It took a long time because my original dr. put a really large band in. I now see Dr. Robert Davis (from tv show "Big Medicine" in Houston). He discovered how big my band was but we had to take fills slow because that's the protocol LAP-BAND® recommends. So it's taken me a bit longer than some people who have written. I think the hard part is learning to eat differently. Being banded doesn't mean you don't want to try to eat all the same things you always have. If you choose to get the band, think of it as a tool not a solution. It's the BEST thing I've ever done for myself....and I've tried them all. Good luck!:wink2:

I'm 5'4" and currently weigh 197.6 lbs. I was just recently approved by my insurance company for the procedure. I'm really excited about starting this new chapter in my life. My only regret is not going through with it three years ago. Best of luck to you!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
