Exercise - 2 weeks post op - what have people been doing

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

Ok today I made my way to the gym - figured 30 minutes elliptical would be good. While I was on there I felt good so I did resistance (not alot no more than 5 for intervals) and inclines and guess what ? My abs hurt near the port after not as in sore but like it felt a few days after surgery. They say not to do any ab exercises and I wouldn't consider this one an ab exercise except of course you do use your core to balance. Dr has ok'ed exercise just not weight.

Anyone have experiences? Up to now I have been walking.

For the last 4 days I am doing 30 minutes on the Elliptical... I always chose a program that lets me walk up hills and down and the high resistance does not have any negative side effects on me.

I asked my surgeon about swimming... he said that I could swim... so in addition to the elliptical I swim 30 minutes as fast as I can and follow it up with 15 minutes of aqua-gymnastics which also includes working out my abs.

stardustic you were done same day as me right? (9/11). And you felt no soreness at all in ur port area the first time after the workout? It isn't normal muscle soreness and today it was practically gone... But I wouldn't do another workout the next day until that was completely gone. Worried I will aggravate it even more. Do u feel back to 100 pct 'normal' with regard to any pain or soreness? I was until I did the elliptical. It's still not intolerable but I went from 0 to about a 2 on pain.

Will try again tomorrow.

Yes, we were banded the same day :-)

I am completely pain free... I do not feel any pain at all... not while working out, after working out or while being inactive. I felt a little soreness in my arms and legs after the first day working out but no pain/discomfort in the port area.

If you feel discomfort I would take it very easy and do only as much as you feel comfortable. I agree to not aggravate it too much. Most likely the pain/discomfort will subside. Remember, this time is still our healing time.

What are you wearing while working out? Make sure that the pants are not too tight. When I wore my jeans (rather tight around the waist) for the very first time the button would press on my port area and I was sore afterward. It was not painful, more like getting a bruise. It only lasted a day or so... and since then I never had any problems.

Let me know how it goes tomorrow. :seeya:

I just started walking today. I didn't exercise before the band, so I started out slowly. My husband and I went and walked a mile. I am planning on upping it 1/4 of a mile per week.

I confess I haven't gone back.. I've actually been home sick since yesterday w/ a sore throat and fever. On the bright side that port pain is now gone. I haven't even gone to work.

Walking is good it didn't bother me - i was doing 1.5 miles the day after surgery - just had a bit of discomfort again that same thing the port. But after about 10 days it was totally gone. And also my brother's dog pulled me the day after (not hard at all) and it hurt there too. I've been walking home from work daily which is 1.7 miles. If I can throw in 30 mins on the elliptical i would be happy even if its 3 times a week.

Dana,

That's all I'm doing right now is walking. I walked during my Post-Op period and it helped. I slowly have worked my way up to 90 mins a day. My doc won't let me do any type of weights or strength exercises until 6 wks, so I am following his advice on the gym for now.

mine doesn't allow weights or strength either till 6 weeks in particular abs.. but i didn't think the elliptical trainer was part of that. Now its a moot point I am SOOOOOOOOO sick. I've done nothing the last few days. Not walking home (1.6 miles) no gym no nothing.

There is nothing wrong with taking a break for a day. Just be sure to resume something the next day. You are doing so wonderfully, you don't want to lose that momentum! lol

Hi everyone,

I'm just starting my "true" exercise plan today, as I am finally motivated to do so...I'm going to to my Treadclimber.

I hope I can stick to a routine going forward.

I bought this Bodybugg which measure the calories you burn all day... so when I am out and active during the weekends and a slug during the week due to desk job and look at my monitor it motivates me to move! Still haven't made it to the gym but I walk home from work 2 miles (in 18 degrees!!)

Are you at 8cc in a 10cc band? wow. I am just curious, do you have alot of pb and sliming? I am really going slow with my fills because I have read so many overfill stories. I was thinking that I did not want to go over 7cc and then I see you with an 8cc and now I'm wondering if 7 will be enough.

Dee - Fire&Spice has a Realize band which requires more restriction from what is being said on this board; what I've heard at my doc's office and also from a friend who has one all supports that. She is at 9 cc's on an 11 cc band. So don't worry and everyone is different - go look at the spreadsheet you can see from that everyone is varied. I'm loving that spreadsheet - haha.

Fire&spice I'm going to add in some resistance training during the week ... I'm losing muscle (I guess this week I lost alot as my calories were a bit on the low side). Has anyone had THIS happen? One month PMS I am able to eat the house down - the next month can't eat anything; the next month the house; the next month nothing again!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
