Honestly...Are You Exercising???

Recommended Posts

Ok...So we have been banded over 2 months now. I'm just curious who is actually exercising. I know some people have not seen the scale move much. Is there anyone out there who is not working out but having great success on the scale?

Just Curious

I have exercised about 5 times since getting my band. I have lost 46 lbs so far. So yes, I have had great success without exercising. However, I am now down to the weight where I stop losing so exercise is definately going to be part of my plan going forward. I already have plans to meet friends at the gym next week. :(

I think we can lose without exercise. But I think exercise is a very important part of our ongoing lifestyle changes.

I have not been on a regular exercise program either and my weight loss has slowed way down. However, this isn't a band issue, but a me issue. I know that I am eating too many calories each day and I have not been exercising regularly.

Although this is supposed to be a life style change, I haven't successfully accomplished that with all the other diet programs I have been on either.

I just had my 2nd fill last Saturday and I do have some restriction all day long and now I really do have to work a program. I have had food get stuck...not to the PBing stage, but it hurts and takes a few minutes to go through. This is not a pleasant feeling and I'm finding that I am eating slower, chewing more, and taking smaller bites....this is the point of the band.

I am also beginning to exercise regularly. It's been way too hot until recently to walk outside, but now it's cooling down and I'm out there walking. I plan on keeping this up, not only to help me lose the weight, but I want to feel better and exercising helps me feel better.

Guess this is much more than asked, but I still feel the band can work, it's just that we have to put the effort into to make it work.

At first, I didn't excercise at all. The pounds were coming off pretty good and I was pretty happy. But I knew I was only going to get so far like that....and I was right. So I started walking about 4 miles every morning --- get up an hour early during the week to work it in. Then I started "wogging" or walking/jogging in intervals. Today, I clocked out a change to my route and pushed it to just over 5 miles. I didn't push it speed wise, but I'm pretty sure I can step it up a little and not add very many minutes to my time.

My energy is out the roof, improving even more as I lose more. Things that I'd started to let slide are now targets for intense focus .... like my laundry room. Today, I dismantled that mess, cleaned everything, reorgnized the cabinets and shelves... It just seems I'm no longer willing to just sort-of do it. It has to be 100%.

Glad to have found this post. My band date was 7/24 and have been doing Water aerobics on and off at least twice a week. A brisk walk at least once a week. I know that's not enough and my weight is showing it. Only lost about 25 lbs since surgery. One fill of 3 ccs and no restriction. Next fill not till Nov 2 ugh!:frown:

I'm for months post surgery, and I just started exercising a LITTLE last month. Just walking at the moment. I bought a new pair of walking shoes last week, and that has helped motivate me. I'm trying to walk at least 5x a week, and my goal is 25 miles for the month.

Before surgery, I could barely walk. Now. I actually have a little spring in my step. Another great motivator.

I know that some people dont exercise, I just wanted to provide an alternate view. I have been exercising since being banded 7/10. First it was just walking about 30 min or so, then I added in a workout video (Biggest Loser Cardio Max, kicked my butt!! lol), now I have added going to the gym and doing the elliptical machine as well as some weights, mostly for my arms. So I do a variety of these things about 5 times a week to keep it interesting. As long as you are doing something you are helping your weightloss. I know that I couldn't have lost 56lbs since 7/10 without working out in some way shape or form. So I help maybe this inspires you all!!!! Best of luck!!

I am almost 3 months post band . I have been exercising a little for the past 2 mths . Not as much as I should but I have noticed a big difference in my muscles. I do ellipse machine for 20 min 2 times a week . then the other days some simple leg lifts and stomach crunches while I watch tv. I had the flu last week and I have been feeling very tired and lazy since. I hope next week I can get my energy back. My weight loss has been slow and i know I dont eat the right thing all the time but I dont feel deprived either like with other diets so hopefully I will continue to loose slowly but surely. Keep on moving everyday thats all we can do .

If thinking a lot about exercise counts, then yeah, I've been exercising A LOT!!

I finally got serious about working out, because the weight was just NOT coming off after my surgery, and I was getting super frustrated. (Although, at the same time, I was glad to not have been GAINING weight, since I'm still struggling to get my thyroid meds just right...)

So for the last few weeks I've been doing Water aerobics two times a week. I've decided this week to add a "weight lifting" class, but it's really freakin' early in the morning, so we'll see how long that lasts.

My plan for now is to try and add another class every couple of weeks until I'm up to 5 or 6 classes a week.

Last time I lost a lot of weight, I was doing the whole treadmill/elliptical thing, but I found that I would get injured too easily (bad knees) which would keep knocking me out of my routine. This time I'm going for the low-impact stuff, knowing I may have slower results, but I'll have more consistent results.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
