STARVING!! 4 Days Post-Op

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days post-op and already questioning my sanity! I am sticking to the rules and I am starving! For the 1st week I am on clear sugar-free liquids. I have cheated and sucked on a few Ritz crackers because I am so hungry! On top of being hungry every time I drink something more than a sip I have to run to the bathroom (diarrhea). Does anyone have any suggestions?? How can I make it 3 weeks before actual food? ?

It sounds like you're not allowed Protein Shakes. If that's the case, you might want to ask if you can drink Isopure (looks like Gatorade). It have zero carbs, 40 grams Protein, 160 cals per 20 ounces. It's a fruit flavored drink, and it comes in several flavors. I know The Vitamin Shoppe sells it, and I'm sure it can be found at similar stores. (Sorry about the bathroom problems. Hopefully, you'll start to feel better soon).

I just posted a similar post. I am 6 days post op and I am starving as well. I have cheated with cheesecake - literally less than a thimble full, and saw that nothing really bad happened. I am so hungry certain times of the day that I can scream. By day 6, the hunger is still there, but there is also a calm. My doctor said I can start Protein Shakes tomorrow - whey Protein Powder, chocolate flavored. I hear that it is pretty tasty. Check with your MDs office if you are permitted to have Protein shakes. I think the doctor would prefer you have protein shakes to Ritz crackers. But I know what you are going through, believe me! I have lost nearly 12 lbs and I am starting to feel a bit better already! Good luck with this - keep an eye on the diarrhea, you don't want to get dehydrated! Keep in touch!:):)

I'm on day 4 post op too. I feel your pain! This is rough. I am not allowed Protein shakes till day 7 so its been broth and Jello and I am soooo sick of it!

I do drink the Isopure Zero Carb drinks. If you are on Clear Liquids then you should be able to have these. I like the pineapple orange banana flavor. It no cheesecake but it helps a little...and I do mean a little lol.

I am also experiencing these hunger pains and my Dr. allowed me to have Protein Shakes, cream of wheat and puddings right after. I wake up in the middle of the night with intense hunger pains. Will these stop after the first fill???? I sure hope so. I cant imagine losing weight if I continue to eat the amounts I am having to in order to stop the pains. Help....

Hey everyone.... im 3 days, well 4 days now i guess. last night i was so hungry, i was told to stay on Clear Liquids for a week after. i have school and things to do and i was weak and could not do anything. so night 2 post op i had a small small amount of milk... it helped, the morning of the 3rd day i had a little more milk in the morning, it worked a little, but last night i was SO hungry it had been 10 days since i had anything more than Jello or gatorade. I REALLY DID NOT WANNA GO AGAINST THE ORDERS BUT ****** so i got me some pudding and took like 20 minutes to eat it ( VERY SLOW ) just testing the waters,..... 15 minutes later i was hungry again!!. so i got piece of cheese and ate that very very slow....... few minutes went by and hunger was back even worse..... so YES I finally made me one egg scrambled and ate that very slow......it seems to have worked fine. i woke up a couple hours ago with some pressure im my chest , maybe like i ate too much ( it was different than the Gassy pressure like you have to burp) but now i feel fine.... now i didnt eat unhealthy but i did skip to eggs a little faster than the Doctor wants but im just gonna tell him Monday when i see him. I was starving and was dizzy, weak, and headaches. and i needed somethin. im not sayin anyone do that, but the way i looked at it is if im hungry already that bad, then i must not be swollen too bad which means i could probably eat somethin thicker, so thats why i started to work my way up to an egg lastnight..... i may not go it again until monday after i talk to the Dr. but i can make it now......

I would suggest trying a Protein shake over Ritz crackers or eggs. They seem harmless, but there is a reason why the doc put you on liquids. You have to give your stomach time to heal. If you're going to cheat, at least cheat with some liquids.

I guess everyone is different, but I was having trouble swallowing Water for the first 4 days, let alone trying to suck down a Ritz Cracker...

I am now almost 7 weeks post op and I can tell you that the Protein shakes, as well as some Soups, are what I've been living on up until two weeks ago and i started eating soft foods. It sucked at times, no doubt; but it has paid off like a charm. I've lost 57lbs since surgery and every time I get hungry I just try to think about the pay off...Its worth it.

Eatting solid foods to early can set you up for complications down the road. Your stitches, internally on your stomach, have not healed yet. The contracting action that the stomach does to digest solid food can rip those stiches. You may think you are tolerating it but you have no idea what you are doing to the stitches inside. I know it's hard...we've all been thru it...but risking a band slipping in the future because you ate too soon is NOT worth the moment of food too soon. Please think about the fact that you need to heal on the inside as well as the outside and stick to the Drs orders...they arn't trying to torture us..there are reasons for what they ask us to do.

To the OP ask your Dr if you can move on to regular liquids..I had to be on Clear Liquids only 1 day..then reg liquids 2wks...reg liquids would at least allow Protein drinks..very runny cream of wheat etc.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
