Any Ideas? 2 Days Post Op..Kinda Scared

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone..

I got banded yesterday morning. Yesterday I could tolerate ice chips with no problem. Today I was told to move more towards Clear liquids..(between 4-6oz every hour...but can't do it).

My problem is whenever I drink anything (no matter how small) I feel like I have to burp, and get pressure in the middle of my chest until I burp. This happens with the tiniest sips. I took the liquid Vicodin, but now whenever I take small sips I feel naseous and feel like I want to vomit (but I haven't). Has this happened to anyone? Is this normal?

Burping is very normal. Go ahead and drink and burp.

Hydrocodone/vicodin has vomiting as a common side effect; I can't take it for that reason. They make "Adult" liquid tylenol; get and take that. And if your surgeon allows, buy and use some gas x (chewable or strips)...that helps break the gas up. Otherwise, just drink your fluids and burp. If you don't get enough in you'll get dehydrated. :)

I forgot to mention that sometimes when I burp I get some foam-ish type of stuff that comes up.

Either you're still swollen from the surgery (common) OR your doc filled some during surgery (it's done, IMHO it's mean) or both. I think you're still ok; but if your doc is still open call and tell him/her. If not, just try to sip Water tonight, or depending on what's on your list of approved foods, something warm. (that will help things pass) Did he approve anything like broth, or Decaf coffee, anything warm that you like and can have?

I am allowed to have other clear broths, but have really only wanted Water. I should also mention that I vomited just after I posted this and feel tremendously better, but am worried about getting fluids down.

Brent you need to call your surgeon. Most of us do PB at some point, but vomiting this early can cause a slip or other problems. You shouldn't be so restricted that you vomit. I don't mean to be gross, but you are just ingesting fluids; they should go through fine. Too tight people vomit up their saliva, or fluids they try to drink. So I wonder if you are abnormally swollen or, as I said, filled during surgery and now it's too much.

EITHER way; even if now you can drink just fine, call your doc. At the least they'll prescribe something for nausea (were you nauseated?) and can tell you what to take for gas etc. If he's closed, call the after-hours number. Don't let it go on all night; there's no reason to suffer! And he needs to know you vomited. OK? Let me know, if you think of it, and good luck! :)

I spoke to my surgeon..he said not to drink anything for 2 hours and let things settle down. He then said to drink hot broths. He said if I was still having problems that he would need to adjust my band tomorrow. He seems to think that it's the swelling too.

Ok! I hope it is! :) I'm glad to know I was on the right track with hot liquids but really more glad that you called him to make sure you're ok! Hang in there; and don't forget adult liquid tylenol (shouldn't upset your stomach) for pain. Once you can take liquids again, that is.

I saw my surgeon early this morning. He took out 2.5cc of Fluid from the band, and I seem to be able to hold down fluids pretty well. I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope that I'm past the worst of it.

AHA! See, I said a reason might be that you were filled during surgery! I am so NOT a professional regarding the lap band but time and again if I read people immediately post op who vomit liquids it's because their surgeon filled them, at least partially, during surgery! AAARRRGH!

Ok that wee rant is over. I am glad you called, and are now feeling better. I can only imagine you must've felt pretty cruddy. Not a happy start to your lap band life, but it should get better now!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
