Hi everyone, I am new to the board (well actually lurking for a couple of weeks). I have been researching lap band for a couple of years and finally made the decision to go ahead with the process and I am very excited about it. I had my consultation with the doctor last week and am currently waiting to hear back from insurance.

My question is actually if anyone who has been overweight/obese since childhood can be successful with lapband. Most people talk about how they gained weight after they were in their 30's or after having children but I have been overweight since about the age of 2 and probably would have been before that if I hadn't been 6 weeks premature. I have been obese to morbidly obese since I was a teenager and I am now 36 years old.

Is there anyone out there that was in the same boat and still successful?

I believe there is a great number of lap and success stories from people who have been overweight most of their lives. You will find many right here at LBT

Of course you can be successful!

This process is a journey that can not necessarily be measured in pounds on a daily basis. A lot of it is about simple change.

Good luck, enjoy the journey and get up and out as much as possible.

I have been overweight for my whole life. There was like a year or something when I was 8 or 9 years old when I was not overweight. Other than that, I have been overweight for my whole life (and continuing to gain more weight every year pretty much).

I'm relatively new to lapband (about 2.5 months post op) but so far I have done pretty well! I'm frustrated because I just finished a liquid diet (my doc requires 3 days clear and 2 days full liquids after a fill) and lost SO much weight on the liquid diet (like 8-9 pounds or something in those 5 days), but have put back on like 4 pounds since. I'm hoping I'll start losing again soon. But overall, I have been successful. And if I can lose some of this weight, I think anyone can!!

Congrats on being banded! I personally think this is a wonderful journey and I am glad to be a part of it.

You will succeed, but remember those Non-scale victories those are just if not more important then what the scale says.

You WILL be successful, don't wonder because it leaves the oppertunity for failure- believe in yourself and that it will work & it will! I have also been over weight my entire life, granted I am 24, but even as a child I was always heavy. In just 5 1/2 months, I have lost about 65 pounds. I am not in a rush, I still have 25 or so to go, but I believe it will come off and it will.

Let your band work for you & you will do great! Congrats on your decission to change your life!:sneaky:

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
