Is this normal eating after being banded?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if this is normal. One of the men at work said that his wife had lap band surgery 1 1/2 years ago with a 25 lb weight loss up to this point. He was telling me that when she eats, she always takes 5 bites then has to vomit. Then comes back to the table and finishes off her entire meal, dessert and all. (example he gave me was a good size steak, large baked potato, 2 veggie sides and piece of cake)

I am just starting the paperwork to be banded and I guess my question is, is this really normal? If this is the case, I don't think that I want to go through the pain. I thought the whole idea of being banded was to help limit your food intake.

Any comments on this one?

Thanks!

Her band is too tight it sounds. That is not normal. As long as you eat slow you won't have that prob. Hth

No it's not normal. Just losing 25 pounds in 1 1/2 years isn't normal. Honestly I do not think she's too tight (just guessing here). In fact I'd think she is too loose. HOWEVER I think also that she isn't following the "rules"...chewing well, eating slow, no drinking. So she "vomits" up because she eats too quickly or whatever, then settles down and eats relatively "normally" but that is an unbanded "normal".

I have good restriction and CAN overeat some things (like tacos) but I could no more eat an entire steak than I could eat, well, a monkey! LOL

The "wife" needs to get a fill, and embrace the banded lifestyle. Doesn't sound to me like she's done that at all.

That's my guess, anyway. But no, it's not band-normal, not once you have good restriction.

That does not sound normal to me at all. It also sounds dangerous and unhealthy. She sounds at serious risk to slip her band. and this may sound bitchy but there's no way in hell I'd put up with vomiting at every meal to have only lost 25lbs over a year and a half. If she's not losing and eating a lot and puking on top of that she's definitely not using the band as the tool it's meant to be. It may be the band wasn't right for her to begin with. She also may one of those people that just weren't ready mentally to have had any WLS. So to answer your question puking then being able to eat a ton a few minutes later does not sound typical to me. Good luck

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was really starting to worry that was normal. So glad to hear that it isn't. I am definitely getting banded as soon as the insurance approves. I know that I can do this since so many other wonderful people have. I will keep reading the forums for inspiration. I know that the band will be my tool along with healthy eating and exercise.

Good for you. I will say you can have steak, and veggies, and some baked potato, and even cake if you want it; but the portions will be MUCH smaller and you won't vomit! :blushing: A "good" dinner for me is 1/2 of a small baked potato and 3-4 oz of a good steak. Delicious. And then I'm full; no need for cake. Not that one has to NEED cake, you know...but it's easier to pass on it when you aren't hungry.

Baked potato. I think that may have been the cause of my first PB yesterday. Not sure - it could have been the chicken. All I can say is it felt so awful there is no way I would want to do it every day!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
