Breaking the Diet Coke cycle...

Recommended Posts

I miss DC so much but have not had one and plan not to have any cause my Dr. say none at all. In all my diets over the years, I have given up everything but always had my friend DC to get me through the day. I stopped drinking caffeine years ago due to my anxiety and drank Caffeine Free DC for years. The day before my Surgery we were out of CFDC so i made my husband go to Stop & Go and get me 2 20 oz bottles he said you will not drink both of those before 12:00 am. I assured him I would but I did not and when I came home from the hospital there the bottle sat and all week long there it sat. My husband drinks diet coke but will not touch the caffeine free. Thank God that my Grandchild wanted a little coke and she is only 3 so we don't give her caffeine so she drank some of that and we poured the rest out. I MISS my diet coke.

I started drinking Tab when I was about 13 years old. That was 44 years ago. I switched to Diet Coke when it came out. I have been addicted for a Looooong Time.

A couple of years ago I switched to caffeine free and it was hell - headaches and I thought I might murder someone, I was so grumpy.

A month ago, I decided to stop Diet Coke in preparation for my surgery (still waiting) to see if I could. I thought it would be hard, but it was a breeze. I started drinking Water and Crystal Light. What amazed me what how thirsty I was and how much Water I am drinking now - usually over 100 ounces per day. I never drank that much Diet Coke. And I feel soooo much better.

I also associate certain foods with Diet Coke - pizza, Mexican, burgers, and popcorn. I have been able to eat all of these without Diet Coke just fine. In fact I am eating without drinking at all.

My biggest piece of advice is: do not try to go off Diet Coke and caffeine at the same time. Either get another source of caffeine or switch to caffeine free diet coke and stop it altogether later.

You can do it. If I could, anybody can!!!!!!!:(

I wasn't necessarily a diet coke addict specifically, but I loved soda and for awhile was drinking half diet/half regular cokes. I also really liked coke zero. There's also a drink called birch beer (kind of like root beer but better) which I can get in my hometown which I LOVE.

On my preop diet (which ended up being 3 weeks long) I wasn't allowed to have soda. Since then, I haven't had any and I don't even want it anymore. I'm not sure if I feel better without it, but I know its certainly healthier (even if you're just drinking diet sodas). Plus, whenever I feel the need to drink I grab Water (I still have trouble getting my 64 oz.).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
