Trapped gas or something else?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else has been having any problems with having trapped gas? I had my surgery on 07/07 and for the past 2-1/2 weeks or so I have been having recurrent trapped gas on my left side. It started out as middle left side gas pains and it seems to have moved to up under my rib cage. It has gotten so bad at times I have almost gone to the ER. WAlking Does NOT help, in fact it makes it worse and I feel like I can't breathe when it gets that bad and trying to walk around. Lying down on my left side seems to help it somewhat. I bought some of those charcocaps last night and it made a world of difference, but it keeps coming back! Everytime I eat it starts it up within 10 to 15 minutes. I made an appointment with my doc for tomorrow, because I was actually concerned about a large bowel obstruction.

I was just curious if anyone else has suffered anything like this?

Thank you bunches!

I had the same thing for several weeks after my surgery. I was convinced something was wrong also. I kept taking my gas x-strips. I don't know for sure that's what's happening to you...but I also found if I layed down for awhile it would ease up or disappear until I ate again. I was self pay so I just knew that something was wrong but in the end it was just me worrying! It eventually after several weeks went away. I don't know if this helps you but I can relate to what you're going through. Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
