I was just banded today and I had a great experience so far. I did have a hiatal hernia removed at the same time. My question is about going back to working out (I am pretty active, despite being overweight). I normally do the tredclimber 2x a week, spin class 1x and also competitive volleyball once a week.

I asked my doctor when I could go back to doing this and he said a week or two. I am completely baffled. I thought I would need some more time. Is there anyone out there that plays a team sport or that is pretty active and can let me know how long it took to get back on track?

TIA

First of all, go by what your doc says, no matter what. Having said that, my doc told me I could do cardio stuff like that as soon as my body tolerated it. He did not want me to strength train for 6 weeks, though.

I agree with Plain. Do what your doctor says. I was on the treadmill within 2 weeks and weight training within 3.

I walked a mile the same day I had surgery and 2 miles the next day. I immediately stepped back into taking care of my house and granddaughter and greatgranddaughter, who live with me. Surgery on Tuesday, back to work on Friday. Bottom line...take what your doctor says and LISTEN to your body. Do whatever your choose to do but stop if your body says "enough".....trust me, you'll know.

Definitely clarify with your doc. Your band and your port need time to heal in place. I like to be pretty active too. My doc told me if I do too much to soon I risk flipping my port (requires another surgery) That set me straight. Let yourself rest, you have the rest of your life to work out:)

Thanks for the advice! I meet with my doc on Wednesday so I will go over it with him then.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
