Relationship with Spouse

Recommended Posts

I've heard from several friends who are banded and who also know other banded ppl that relationships with their spouses get hard. Something about now that one spouse has higher self confidence and there are more people hitting on them their marriage seems to crumble. I'm so worried about this. I haven't been banded yet, info session mon, but I'm 100 lbs over goal and my husband has already said that he has loved me no matter what I look like (I actually believe he's telling the truth too). He's supportive from the "if this is really what you want" point of view but doesn't seem to be all that excited. This is my second marriage and I just can't bear to think we could split over something like that. Anyone have issues like this?:)

I think it's more of a self esteem or trust issue. If one partner does something to drastically change their appearance, it could be normal for the other to become jealous or worried about the marriage. I think it all comes down to what the marriage was like BEFORE the transformation.

I know a lot of cases where the marriage got stronger because the obese person finally felt better about themselves and was able to be more intimate, trusting and true in the relationship.

I have been married for 20 years and when I was first married I was much much thinner. My husband has also had medical problems. We have stood by each other through more than some people do in a lifetime. We have an extremely strong marriage and love and support each other through everything. When I first decided to embark on this journey, I talked to him about it. About every thought that was running through my head. When we were through, he was so supportive and for anything that will possibly give us more years together. For us, it isn't necessarily about how we look but about how we are together. I am so glad I have him in my life. If you have a strong marriage and your husband supports you then you have no reason not to take it at face value.

Thanks ladies! I guess I didn't think about how their marriages were before the surg. No longer worried. We have a very strong super-sharing kind of relationship. I think maybe he's just worried that this is the best way for me to be happier with myself. :)

I've been married to my husband 26 years this Nov and we dated in high school (although we broke up then and weren't married until 11 years later). Back then I was MUCH smaller. MUCH.

So for me it was more....can my marriage survive me being obese....and it did. I am pretty outgoing whether I'm fat or not and he knows I don't cheat because I choose not to, not because I'm fat and no one else would look at me. ERGO...when I get thinner I still won't cheat.

I guess it depends on your marriage; why you're with each other (some people prefer partners who are heavier...we all have our 'likes") ....how you act heavy, how you act thin.

Some do split...many don't. If you feel you're "strong" and have trouble, couples therapy can do worlds of good.

Either way, this fear isn't a good reason to remain unhealthy.

RM, when in Nov.? Our's is on the 16th. It is an unusual month to be married. I loved it. We still love it because it kind of opens up the holiday season.

Add me to the November anniversaries! Three years come Nov 8. It was our dating anniversary and seemed natural to keep it. Plus it was a Wednesday and the local judge only married people on Wednesdays. Lucky for us!

About a yea ago, my wife lost about 75#. Although about 25# from goal, she looked amazing. I have to admit that I felt threatenned. Not because I thaught she would not want to be with me, but due to my own insecurity because I was very overweight. She felt great about the way she looked and was loving all the new found attention she was getting from everyone. She deserved it. I really started to resent her in some strange way, and actually thought to myself that I would not mind if she gained back some weight. Yes I know, that is pretty shallow, but I was so uncomfortable in my own skin, this crossed my mind.

Well, lets fast forward...I am banded now and as you can see from the ticker, I am 1/2 way towards my goal, and I feel great. Now I am getting some of that attention and my self esteem is growing by the day.:crying:

Now she has put about 25# back on, but I don't think she will feel the same way I felt. She is stronger than me in that regard. We are working together to try to get that weight back off that came back. She is not banded. I can see how hard it is.

Interesting times!

Since being banded 4/2/09 My husband and I (8 years) have had problems but I know it is me. I think they put the band in and took the libido out... :crying: I have talked to my doctor and because I had a few other health issues it has been decided that I have had somewhat of a hormonal rush but in the opposite direction.... I have talked to other females my age who were also banded and they ahve also shared similar stories of feeling forced for lack of a better word to have relations etc and just not feeling like in the mood. For me personally- it has nothign to do with the way I look- I look better now than ever i just dont have the energy to do it....

Our anniversary is 11/23/94. Sorry RM. I like it because my BDay is in Oct, then anniversary in Nov and Christmas in Dec. I wish I could move Valentine's Day to Jan. :)

Seriously, I am glad someone started this topic. This issue has been in the back of my mind. I know I am just looking for something to worry about.

Thanks.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
