How obese did I need to be 5 years ago?

Recommended Posts

When providing my 5 yr. weight history, just how obese do I need to be? My 04 weight was 193 on the page the doctor's office copied for me (BMI 34.2). I'm sure I was heavier later than year. This was in March after I had been sick. In March of 05 I was up to 258 (BMI 45.7). Do you think that I should ask the doctor to look for a page in my chart that shows a higher weight just to be sure, or do you think I should be okay? If anyone has had a similar situation, I would be really glad to hear.

BTW, my BMI is 50 now, and I have UHC John Deere Select.

I have a similar issue. I'm at a 40BMI now but have not been there for 5 years. I have been over 35 for 5 years, but don't have any major co-morbidities. I hope they approve it.

Never in a million years did I think I would be worried about being "fat enough".

Definitely submit the heaviest weight from every year. So, if you were heavier later in the year, I'd get that documentation from your doctor and use that as your weight for that year. I actually just got my complete files from all my previous docs so I could pull out the heaviest weights myself. And, my bariatric surgeon's office also said they wanted just the heaviest weight from each year to send for the insurance approval.

Well, I went ahead and asked my PCP's office to fax over a heavier weight. As of Thursday (the request was Monday) the lady who submits to insurance at my surgeon's office had not received the documentation of higher weight. However, my paperwork was submitted AND approved on Friday (talk about fast). So, I don't really know what was submitted, and now I guess it doesn't matter. I'm scheduled for surgery on July 7, and I couldn't be more excited!!:tongue_smilie:

Yep---I am in the same boat as you guys. 41 BMI for last couple of months, but up and down for the last couple of years. Keep us updated on what works and what doesn't. My insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield, Alliance Select HSA.

Congrads sooo happy for you!!! the Patient coordinator told me at my doctors office that the ins company will take your BMI at what you are now. Im at 41 BMI but the last 5 years are to show that you have been over weight. I guess they dont want to see people gain a crap load of weight in a year to get this surgery. I mean I can definetly prove i have been over weight the last 5 years just not at a BMI of 41 for the last 5 years. Keep in mind that my INS is United health care choice plus.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
