Quick question....

I was banded on May 18th...surgery weight was 222...Last Wednesday (May 27th) I was down to 205...

Over the last week, I have gained 4 pounds! I have progressed to a pureed diet...but my calories are at about 500 per day...I am walking every night with intensity.

Has anyone had a similar experience...it's kind of depressing.

honestly, your body is in starvation mode due to such a low calorie consumption. Alot of ppl gain weight untill they have their first fill. Just know that this is tempory, and soon the scale will drop. I would try to get more calories in.

Could be salt, ask your nutritionist. Lots of people gain a little as they heal. It MAY be starvation? some people say they have to eat more to lose. not me; I've been eating about 400-600 cal a day since May 7 and am dropping weight like it was easy and feeling wonderfully.

You would know yourself best; what past diets worked for you?

Coming off a liquid diet will cause your weight to fluctuate a bit, and many of us are hungry and gain a bit (or diet like fiends) until we get good restriction.

Your surgeon and/or nutritionist can help you!

The same thing happened to me and I was about to go bonkers. Thanks to friends on this site, I kept my cool!!

I called my surgeon's office about it and they referred me to my PCP. Went there and it turns out that I'm highly sensitive to sodium. Which I pretty much already knew. I've always had "puffy" feet and hands and that totally went away the week after surgery. Pretty much because I couldn't eat or drink anything. I probably got 64 oz of Fluid in for the entire week instead of per day.

As soon as I went to mushies, I started to gain a pound per day. Not cute and quite frustrating since I lost 15 the first week! My PCP was floored by that and said it wasn't good. Needless to say, because of this and my fluctuating blood pressure, I was given a diuretic to take as needed. Since I've started that regimen, I've started to lose again.

I say all this to say...it's normal. While yours may not be sodium sensitivy, the minor weight gain is okay. Hold tight until your fill...you'll be fine!! Take care!

hi

in the beginning i was not eating enough and totally stopped losing weight. my body did go into starvation mode.

i learned the hard way i needed to eat between 900-1100 cals a day to lose weight.

plus in the beginning right after the surgery.....my body was acting weird from the surgery, change in diet, etc. i was watching the scale like a hawk. after the first 4 weeks it started to work more regularly.

one thing that really helped me was when i stopped weighing myself. i allowed myself 1 time per month. i also measured myself and found there were times i was losing alot of inches and not weight. my exercise routine was changing my body from fat to muscle.

Wow, why are you only eating 500 calories? That is not enough so I agree that you should up your calories a little more. At least to 1000. Or, instead of listening to us...could you ask your nutritionist?

But, like others have mentioned...this temporary plateau or weight gain during the first few weeks after surgery is normal! Dont stress.

It happened to most of us:)

I'm in the same boat. Was banded May 20th and lost 6 pounds in 5 days after surgery. However, got on the scale Monday and saw that I had stayed the same. I am not weighing myself now until my first fill, which is the 29th. I've spoken with lots of members on here who have gone through the same thing {as you can see with the replies to this thread!}. Our bodies are just adjusting to the drastic change. We just need to keep our heads up and we'll make it through! Don't get discouraged!

I was also banded on 5/18 and have gained around 4 pounds since surgery. Although it is very frustrating you have to hang in their. I had to do a 2 week preop diet and my dr assures me that since I am eating regularly that is why there is weight gain. I realize this is a slow process and it is hard to change years of bad habits. Hang in there, you can do it.

I'm being banded tomorrow. I've heard of people losing a lot of weight after surgery (i.e. six pounds in 6th post-op day); but are you saying I'm going to gain it back?

I hadn't even thought of gaining the weight back as being a problem.

Now I'm concerned and confused! Help!

Lindsay, everyone is different, so I guess it depends on you! I have read on here that it's very common to stop losing for a couple of weeks once you begin the mushy phase, but once your body gets adjusted, you start to lose again. Don't let this discourage you, I'm sure you'll be very successful. Good luck tomorrow!

Don't be scurred! Here is the deal. Usually, doing the pre and post op phase of liquids, you are losing a lot of weight fast. Water weight and some fat. You are usually on a really low calorie intake and you are sort of shocking your body (from what we ate before we ever started thinking about the band). You body is confused. SO, when you start to eat a little more, add real foods back in...you body gets all excited again and wants to hold on to everything you are eating...it needs time to adjust and so does your metabolism...which probably slowed down during the liquid phase.

I didnt gain any weight when I started solids again, but my weight loss stopped for about a week. I started walking and set a goal to do my first 5k...and that helped me stay motivated. As soon as I upped my exercise, the scale started to move in the right direction again.

Hey. I was banded on the 21st of May and having the same problem! It's not just you. It's completely normal. I have gained 2 pounds back and am watching it like a hawk. I had to tell myself only to weigh in 1 time a week and to allow more calorie intake because my body is storing all the fat because it thinks its starving.

I was banded on 6-25 and get my first fill tomorrow. The same thing happened to me and it is discouraging. I lost 16 lbs initially but I when I went off mushies I gained 5 lbs back. I really hope the fill will help. So this isn't unusual?

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
