How soon is too soon for real food?

Recommended Posts

I'm glad I found this thread. All the paperwork from my doctor's office stated that I would be on clear liquid for 1 week, full liquids for 3 weeks, mushies/puree for 2 weeks and then start solid food. I was banded on May 21 and at my 1 week post op appt, the doctor who saw me (not who banded me) told me to do full liquids for 10 days then mushies for another 10 days. At first I was happy but now I'm just confused because I feel like why did you write all this stuff about the stomach healing properly and then advance me early. I almost feel like I'm doing something wrong. Not to mention, all the paperwork said I should be evaluated by the dr before I advance to the next stage but she told me to set up my next appt for 5 weeks....I just don't get it...

I was done on the 12th last month and honestly, I'm 3 weeks out and I think I could just start soft food now. I was on clear fluids day 1-2 then free fluids there after until day 14, then pureed and mushie food until day 28 and then soft food/normal food after that. Before surgery I ate for boredom, I ate because if it was lunch time I'd eat, and my portion sizes where ridiculous. Now I'm hardly ever hungry, my stomach has rumbled at me maybe 3 times and the last time that happened was yesterday, woke up and had a drink then had my yoghurt at around 11am, then just drank for the rest and wasn't hungry til 4pm so I had a popsicle and just drank until 6 when I had some dinner. You could always ring your surgeon and see if you could trial some things, like mix and match, have soft food for Breakfast, soft for lunch and then something different for dinner. Having something too early on in the recovery stage may cause problems down the track but if you watch what you eat now that might not happen (not saying it won't because slippage/erosion sometimes happens for no reason)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
