question about hunger and irritibility

Recommended Posts

So, I'm trying to do my pre pre op diet (six month diet) and have to lose 30 pounds in six weeks. The past two days I've tried to do a liquid diet and it's been harder than I anticipated. I was trying to do yard work yesterday and I was so crabby and light headed that I was yelling at my kids and it made me feel really bad. They were being pretty rambunctious but I made a totall @ss of myself to my sweet neighbors. Things like: "STOP THAT! KNOCK IT OFF! GROW A BRAIN!" I hate that out of control crabby feeling! I have never in my life talked to my kids like that let alone shout at them. They didn't seem to notice which is good but it still made me feel bad and I started to worry about life after the band

When you have the band and have good restriction do you still feel light headed and grumpy bear? Or do you just not feel hungry and go about your day like normal?

I do feel defeated because I totally cheated today and had fish sticks and my left over birthday cake. Needless to say I'm a pretty happy momma right now but I'm spinning my wheels if I don't get back on track.

Thanks for listening

I had that problem because I'm hypoglycemic and when my sugar is low I am EVIL. It was much better after I was banded because I had no appetite for the first 2-3 weeks. It gets better!

I feel for ya, i am a miserable SOB when i am overly hungry. But the good news is that it does get better. Try spacing your liquids or food out so that you can have something that you are permitted every two hours. That way you will not be ravenous and therefore tempted to grab something thats not so good for ya.

It will get easier as time goes on. My pre op diet was not as long as yours (just two weeks) but I had moments of irritability as well.

After you start gettign fills. It should get better. I have also started tracking my progress on youtube. I found a great support group there and it keeps me on track. If you get the chance feel free to visit. My channel is 2livesmart. I wish you all the best in your journey. Hang in there!

Kelin- You know, that is probably my problem, waiting too long to eat and then wanting to eat a deep fried shetland pony! LOL

Lynell I would love to come and see your you tube, thanks!

A deep fried shetland pony... LOL... that is funny!!! I was a mess during my pre-op diet. It was "only" for 4 weeks, but I was either crying or screaming the whole time. I'm sure I was a little bit lonely because everyone was hiding from me :purplebananna:... not too fun to be around. Trying to get used to not having my best friend (food) around was scary and sad, and having to deal with my emotions without turning to food was hard. I remember posting and asking if anyone else was an emotional mess during their pre-op diet and it seemed to be very common. For me it has been MUCH better since my surgery. I am happier, feel so much better, and have learned that there are ways to deal with lifes ups and downs without always turning to food. Good luck to you..... it will get better. Take care. Becky

I am in week 3 of my preop diet and I can so relate, I am being banded next week. It does get easier, after a few days your body seems to get used to the new reality and does not complain as loudly. I am curious does your doctor require a liquid diet for 6 week or are you just doing it because of the amount of weight you need to lose first? I am doing 1200 calories a day and having good steady weight loss so I hope my doctor is pleased with that on surgery day. The last 3 days before surgery are full liquids.

Before my insurance will approve me I have to go on a six month doctor supervised diet and lose 10% of my body weight. I just found out that they will let me use my doctors appointment in February as the starting point but I gained 10 pounds in March because of stress so I have lost that but I still need to be down 10% of what I was in his office. The soonest I can submit my papers in July 3rd which is exciting but that also means that I can't mess around, I have to lose an average of five pounds a week to hit that goal.

No one really understands what I am going through right now. I keep hearing the "you'll never lose that much" and "its just not safe." I know more about all of that than anyone but in the long run it will help me out so I'm willing to try it.

Right now I'm doing the Master Cleanse for three days. Its only the afternoon of the first day and I'm already starving for Cheerios but Ihave to keep reminding myself that it's not going to be a picnic on the liquid diet either and at least I'm priming myself for what is up ahead.

I just pray that I don't have another melt down like I did a few days ago LOL.

Good luck, I know how hard it is to try and lose under the gun like that. Insurance sometimes does not make a lot of sense, but you are committed and that is half the battle. We will be sending positive thoughts your way.

I'm definitely one of those people who gets really grumpy when I'm very hungry (I call that point "the Danger Zone"). It hasn't really been a problem with the band, since I plan regular meals and the band does a lot to minimize hunger.

The only hard thing for me was that -- pretty shortly after I got my band, I was out of town for Christmas (staying at a hotel w/my mom, near my brother's house). My mom and I planned a day for just the two of us, and we both took a long time getting up & out of the hotel. What I SHOULD have done was to eat a bite of something while we were getting ready. Instead, I had to just keep quiet because I was in a FOUL mood until we finally got to the restaurant.

What I find with the band is that, when I'm hungry, I'm REALLY hungry (though not quite in the Danger Zone) because I'm totally empty! However, I've had to learn not to say how hungry I am when I sit down to meals with people who don't know about the band, since I get totally full after just a few bites!

Hang in there! It's so much better once you're banded!

I too was a mess pre-band. My poor family. I would have these huge mood swings. One minute I would be so angry I would swear my head was spinning around and the next I was sobbing. It was awful! But you know what? We all lived through it and I'm so glad I did. My family survived and so will yours. I would apologize and tell them I wasn't myself. I'm so much happier now than I have ever been. Once you're body adjusts to the change in nutrition, it will get better. And I don't remember ever having that problem once banded.

Also keep in mind that fat cells store hormones and if you're loosing weight those hormones are probably being released. I would get horrible Migraine headaches during that time as well that I usually only get occassionally during TOM. Your body doesn't know what's going on. Try to keep your blood sugar up and not wait too long between eating or drinking your shakes. I was wondering if the liquid diet was suggested by your doc or are you just trying to get a jump on things? If permitted by your doc, try eating a healthy meal at dinner time high in Protein and veggies. That will help. Good luck!!

Sounds to me like Carb Withdrawls....for me when I go to a low carb way of eating there is about a 2wk period where it's like satan has moved in. Once my body adjust to the change in my eating habits everything tends to settle down, but I really haven't noticed it since being banded, but what I have noticed is that I get very irritable if I wait until I'm starving to eat.

Good luck to you on your pre-op, I wish you the best!!

~Monica

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
