Hi,

I was just wondering how a really bad case of the vomitting flu could affect the sleeve? Is there a possibilitey that the up-chuck and strain could cause the sleeve to rip or maybe a staple pop out? Has anyone with the sleeve had the flu that could share their experience and if you had any complications?

I've not been ill where I needed to vomit in the last year since I've had my sleeve but I did hurl in the hospital. I drank the blue dye too fast and it came right back up. I was concerned that I might have done something to my staple line. Dr. Aceves said it was no problem. With a band when you vomit you can slip. With a sleeve the up side is, you don't have much to vomit. ;o) It hurt like a bear the day after surgery to vomit but it was short lived.

The first month is really the big concern with sleeves and vomiting isn't a problem. Cheating on the post op diet is a BIG problem. If you happen to be one that won't be able to handle the post op diet, get a band.

Getting stuff out of your stomach is not an issue, putting too much food in there is a huge issue.

Once your staple line heals, you have a normal stomach that is as strong as an unaltered stomach. So vomiting isn't any more dangerous than it was before.

How long is it until that staple line is considered healed?

You'll get different answers. The big healing comes in the first 2 weeks and that's why most programs have you on liquids of some sort for at least two weeks. But after that, it varies and you'll get answers that range from one month to three.

My answer is 6 weeks.

The general trend in medicine is 3 weeks to heal and 6 weeks to be fully recovered so 6 weeks is what I use.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
