I am thinking of having this done due to having severe back problems and being about 85lbs over weight. My surgeon said that if I didn't want the surgery it would help to lose this weight and it could prolong surgery. So I am looking into this surgery instead of the back surgery. Has anyone had this done and actually had improvements on back pain???

I'm not sure I exactly understand what you want here; you mean your surgeon said if you don't want back surgery, to lose weight and that would help your pain?

IF your back pain is caused by obesity and you are successful at losing with the lap band, then yes it will help your pain. If your pain is caused by some other issue and your weight just makes it worse, then it may not help. AND lap band surgery requires diet and exercise to work; you have to watch what you eat, exercise etc for the weight to come off.

If you just want lap band surgery to fix your back, I think you may need to look into it (and other options) a little deeper...unless I misunderstand your post?

Thanks for your response, sorry I wasn't really clear. I was told I need a 3 level spinal fusion but the doctor said if I got down to my ideal weight for my height, exercise and strengthen my core muscles that it could prolong the back surgery. Unfortunately I would have to lose about 85- 100 lbs and I don't think I can do that on my own so I was looking into this as well. Thanks again!!

I'm 5'2'' I've lost 45 lbs (still have 15 to go) w/the lap-band surgery and the sciatica has completely DISAPPEARED. No kidding. I still have some neck issues due to 2 disk herniations but nothing like before. I think you should do whatever you need to do to get the weight off. Your spine is the support column of your body and all the weight takes it's toll. Talk and think things over with a few doctors (not just one) your family, do research and ask lots questions. there is a risk w/surgery but also with obesity. I'm glad I got banded, I feel much more alive and can chase after my toddler, I only wish I had gotten it sooner.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
