Question about weight loss immediately after band

Recommended Posts

I keep running into posts from ppl who are a week or 2 after banding and have lost 30-40 lbs. I'm 2 weeks post-op today and have lost little to no weight after surgery - 1 think maybe 5 lbs. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a matter of 'everyone is different'?

people with 30-40 lbs lost include the pre-op diet. Depending on if you were on a pre-op or for how long, what you're doing post surgery is very normal. After surgery, until you start getting fills, some will gain a few lbs. If you're down 5 since surgery, I think you're doing fine. have fun....

Don't worry at all... the weight loss is very very slow... the slower the better. I did about 20lbs pre surgery on a normal diet. In the first week I lost about 5 lbs and then did about another 15 in the first 6 weeks-8 weeks post surgery. I went in today and they're happy with my progress. Slow is better - re-adjust your expectations.

My weight loss has been slow but steady.....35lbs 1st year and still losing.....25lbs left to lose. Due to medical issues this year, I have not exercised much either, so am glad with what I did lose. Dont panic, I did, but did realize I had to eat healthier, most days, for weight to move, it has, tg. Everyones different, but it does come off, patience ;)

Almost all of us include our pre-op weight loss on our tickers. And, the 3-4 weeks immediately after surgery may bring you little or no weight loss (or even a little gain) because you are healing. You have the liquid diet post-op, the transition to mushy foods and then the transition to "real" food. All that adds up to not the weight loss you are hoping for. But once you start getting fills, the weight will start coming off more steadily, and at your sweet spot (which could be even 5 or 6 fills down the road), you should see 1-3 pounds a week steadily.

Thanks all. I'm not panicking, just curious to see if I'm on the right track. ;) I'm going to count my loss so far as a plus and just keep moving forward!

You are doing a great job! I lost 20 pre-op but didn't start loosing again until my first fill, about one month later. It gets better after that. You are definitely on the right track!

Everybody is different. The 1st week post op I lost 5 lbs and then I stalled for a month.

After that I started losing 2 lbs a week steadily. Don't fret and don't get discouraged. You will get there!

I noticed last night that many people are on liquids for a month after surgery. I only had 1 day of clear and then 1 week of full liquids. During this time I still had the weight from the "surgery gas" I was about 6 lbs heavier the day I left the hoptial. I think I would have lost more if I had been on liquids that long. I would have also killed somebody. I was never really hungry. Also as I started mushy foods and later added the solids the scale stopped moving. Once my body adjusted to the new stuff I started to loose again. I have lost 20lbs. in the 2 months since surgery, my total is 39 lbs. since meeting the doc for the first consult in Nov.

It's strange because right after surgery I was still losing really fast. lost 10# before during my 1 week pre-op diet, 10# During the 6 adys post-op and then bam! I haven't lost anything in the week since. It's a bit of a bummer to me as well. I understand some people not losing before their fill because they have no restriction, but I still ahve great restriction and am on liquids only consuming about 500-600cals per day. I think the problem is that my body is actually going into starvation mode. I know I shouldn't get my expectations up too hight but it's hard not to expect to lose weight when you're hardly eating anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
