How active were you the first few days thru the first week of surgery? How much walking is enough? How much is to much? What other activities did you do?

I stayed home a total of three days (that includes the day of surgery). During those days, I walked a little bit every hour or so....down to the mailbox and back. Around the back yard. Across the street to chat with a neighbor. And a little more each day. Then, on Friday, I went to work. I park under the building so no walking there, but our parking deck has access to a recreational area (like a state park) so I went out and walked a little ways and back. From that point, I just walked a little more total each day. Listen to your body....you'll know if you try to push too hard. I did dishes and stuff at home, but my adult granddaughter (20) who lives with me vaccumed and stuff. I did a little laundry here and there. And I let the other housekeeping stuff just wait!

I was hospitalized over night but was up and walking 5 hrs after surgery. Once home I relaxed a little and only moved around a little.

I started walking outside (around the neighborhood) about 4 days after I was home. Now I walk 4-5 x a week and after ny mext appt May 15 I plan to join Curves-

The only walking I did was to the bathroom and back. I was in so much pain. I was out for a week...so, I didn't do a whole lot. And if you do too much walking, your body with definitely tell you.

I was in the hospital for two days after surgery on IV fluids. I could not get anything down at all so they had to feed me with the IVs. This really wiped me out.

I am a 6'3" man, that was fairly active before the surgery. I would do the elliptical cross trainer for 30 minutes everyday and would take my 4 year old to the park, etc. But when I got back all I wanted to do was sit and hold my stomach.

I knew that walking helped but I did not have the energy. My wife started taking me for rides since she noticed that the bumpy roads where we lived produced a lot of burps out of me while we were driving around, so we did that.

I was like that for about 4 or 5 days after surgery then I started getting a full nights sleep and having energy again.

Just do what you can,

-BSG

P.S. - Getting in a hot shower and singing and rocking back and forth really helps with the gas too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
