Hello everyone. I am 36 yrs old and had a RNY (gastric bypass) 11 years ago. I got down to 135 lbs. but regained and now am about 165 lbs which is a lot on a 5'3 frame.

I am interested in getting the lap-band on top of the RNY. I'v e heard of a few people who have done this with success.

Is there a specific weight requirement with this procedure?

Anyone have it done in Mexico where it's much cheaper? I'm sure my insurance would not cover it since I am not BMI over 35.

Any add'l advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

MC

Sorry MC, I dont have any answers for you...

but I must commend you for only gaining 30 pounds in 11 years. WOW!

Have you tried calling a surgeons office and getting some answers from them? Different surgeons may have different opinions on banding after by-pass.

I would get several opinions!

good luck

I wish I had time to respond, but I'm swamped. I just wanted to wish you a quick "good luck" before you go. I hope you do well.

Skinny Minnie, you might want to post this under the introductions thread so that more people can see it and respond to it. Thanks

MC. Dr. Ortiz in TJ has preformed the band on many bypass patients. There are a few of his bypass/band patients on his web site you can speak with at lapbandforum.com . I know right now he is one of a few that do it. Met a woman in his office in July who couldnt find a Dr. in the U.S. to preform it so she flew in from the US for the surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
