Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about getting bariatric surgery for a few years now. My BMI is over 40, and I've tried every single diet, seen doctors, and exercised as often as I can with no results.

I was finally approved for Medical Assistance through the State of Minnesota. I'm 20, and a full-time student and without insurance because I work part-time. I was approved on the basis of being a "child aged 19-21." I'm 20 now, and I will be 21 in September.

As for my plans - I'm scheduling an appointment with my Internal Medicine doctor this week to talk about undergoing the lap-band procedure. I'm assuming I am a good candidate because I'm young. I get really really bad Migraines, and my neurologist thinks that I will benefit from losing weight. I also have GERD. I don't have any other health problems at the moment, other than depression which I am being treated for. My BP is normal, and my cholesteral is high.

I really want to do this surgery at 20 because I have a feeling I will bounce back faster at this age.

I'm very nervous about the amount of pain. Will they give you adequate pain medication? I've been looking for that information online, but I can't seem to find it. Other than that, I am off from school from May 15th to September 8th or so, and I'm thinking this summer is the perfect time to do this.

Any comments, opinions, or experiences are welcomed and encouraged. :( I'm so excited that I'm finally going forward with this idea that I've had for so long.

Hey umgirl, welcome to lapbandtalk. My experience with the band was that it involved very little pain (others will disagree, though). I was back at work within 4 days. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
