Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

I finally did it... well the first step anyways

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I want to share with everyone my excitement in finally telling my darling boyfriend that i want to go and get a LB.

Clearly, not all that exciting but for me its a huge step. I already have the Drs referral but it has taken me 1 month to finally tell anybody about it!

While my BF is great, and i knew he would be great about it, to admit that i had lost control and needed help was huge. Also, its not something i ever talk about.

So i stunned that i told him and completely exciting that I can now go and organise it.

So any recommendations on DRs. I was thinking of going into see Paul Obriens crew, as they are apparently the best. The office is about 45 min away from me, so that might be an issue... well at least for the group meetings.. i would like to go to these out in the eastern suburbs.. does anyone know if you can join the knox hopsital bandits without being operated there..

Anyways thanxs for listening... any recommendations on DRs would be appreciated :(

congratulations on your decision! I'm in Perth so can't help with recommendations, though of course I know of Paul O'Brien, him being one of the pioneers of the band.

Good luck with your preparations!

Congratulations!

I found the hardest part of making this decision was admitting to myself that I needed help to control my eating, so I know how hard it is.

I am going through The Avenue where Paul O'Brien is, so far I have had great experiences with them. My surgeon will be Paul Burton and I get banded at the end of May, I can't wait!

Good luck!!!

Hey Tully, thanks for your nice words. Im very excited!

I would be interested to know about your experience with the Paul Burton. How long was it from the time of your information seminar to surgery date??

Hi mspickle,

I went to my first info session for The Avenue at the end of December 2008. I then got a referal from my GP in January and made an appointment to see Dr Burton at the start of February. We set my surgery date for May, because that is when my private health insurance will be ready to pay for the surgery.

It was all quite simple and he seemed like a nice guy. I have a pre-surgery appointment at the start of May and then my surgery at the end of May. :rolleyes2:

I think you could probably get it organised quicker than me if you already have your private health insurance ready to go.

I have two friends that had Prof O'Brien and thought he was wonderful, I ended up seeing Dr Burton because he was quicker to get into and cheaper, but obviously still an excellent doctor! You can imagine Prof O'Brien is quite popular and is harder to get into see and can charge more for his services.

Hey Ms Pickle!

Were you at the Bariatric Centre info night yesterday?

We (as in husband and I) were and found the session really interesting. Husband is still not convinced but I'm very excited. My appointment with Stewart is on Tuesday and I can't wait!

Hey Jane! I was there, very exciting! Though if your anything like me, i have researched the LB to death so i knew most of it already but its good to hear it from a professional!

My man got alot from it, learnt alot, which for me was kinda the point, I wanted him to know what it was all about.

I haven't made an appointment yet, plan to on Monday morning!

I am starting to get nervous about the whole process, i know im going to do it, i need to do it, but its a huge change!!!

Nyways let me know how your appointment goes!

Cheers

Pickle

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
