Eating too much 2 weeks post surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have a two-part question:

Part one: Monday will be my two week post surgery date and I feel as if I am healing and feeling well. I've always had a strong stomach so I've experienced no nausea or eating problems. I'm following the prescribed types of foods--liquids, blender, soft etc., but I wonder if I am eating too much? I am a teacher, and during my teaching day, I feel like I can't get enough to eat. I've been having oatmeal for Breakfast, yogurt for snack, cottage cheese and fruit cup for lunch and by the end of the school day, around 2:30, I'm starving. It all seems like too much eating to me. I noticed today, at home, I don't feel as hungry. It is at dinner time that I get the "full" feeling--to me that is when I can't swallow food any more. Is that what others are feeling?

Part two: I'm not losing much weight at all, but I think that is because I am also working out frequently and am probably gaining in muscle--which is fine with me. I do "feel" a difference in my body. I know that I haven't gotten a fill yet, but am wondering what happened in surgery...did the surgery of just putting the band on create a pouch which will get smaller with fills? I don't feel like this part (pre-fill time) was ever explained very well.

Any explanations will be extremely appreciated.

I don''t have any input for the first part of your question but I do need to comment about the second part. It really wasn't explained to me that well either. The big push was that this was healing time. My band is empty and I am scheduled for a fill on Mon. The first week or so I felt some restriction but I believe that was from swelling and as it went down I was able to eat more. Of course I am not dropping the pounds as I had hoped but am doing about .5 - .75 lbs. per week. I hope that the fill will give me some restriction and I will be able to do the 3 1/2c meals per day. I really have problems with the measure being in volume, my mind is not really picking up on the full picture.

I have only been banded for just under 2 weeks also, and I am not hungry at all. My doc did put some saline in though on the table so that hunger was not an issue for me post-op. Sounds like there are one or two issues for you - and only you will know which - and only if you're being honest with yourself as well.

1) Normal hunger because your band is empty so it is not re-setting your hunger sensors. In which case, hang in there and make sure what you eat is low cal.

2) Head hunger. Us fatties like to eat and its not because we're actually hungry most of the time. If you are "hungry" try to re-evaluate and see if you are actually "pain in my stomach" hungry or if you could go another hour. Also, we get actual hunger triggers if we are dehydrated.

If it is number 1) then it will go after a fill, however nothing but fixing your behaviour patterns and emotions will sort out 2)...

Hope that helps x

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
