I was hanging out with my boyfriend and two of his friends, one of the friends knew I had the lap band. I was talking about how I was going in for a fill in a couple days and the friend who didn't know I had the lap band told me that having the lap band or gastric bypass is the "lazy" and "easy" way out. This shocked me because he was the first one to tell me that; i wasn't quite sure what to say. It angered me and I told him that this was no way the "easy" way out and he wouldn't know. He continued to tell me his beliefs, telling me he was right and I was wrong; he wouldn't take in consideration anything I was saying. Have any of you experienced people saying this to you? And, if, what do/did you say back to them?

:blink::mad2:

There are many people that may feel it's the "easy" way, but you know what? WHO CARES WHAT THEY THINK? You have to do what works for you. It's not even your boyfriend, it's his friend...how dare he even have the audacity to say that to you?? I wouldn't worry about trying to change anyone's mind- be confident in who you are, in your choice, and in your end result.

I have dealt with weight my whole life and I made my choice- I couldn't care less who has a problem with it! When we're strutting around even finer than we already are, we'll see what they have to say then!!!!

And I suppose that if your appendix had ruptured and you had surgery for that he would think that you took the easy way out.

The problem is that some people think that being fat is your fault.

There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that obesity is actually a medical condition.

If there is a surgical treatment for a life threatening illness it has to be considered.

So, If he ever has a car wreck and needs surgery to repair a torn aorta, tell him to "Suck it up" and not to take the easy way out!

P.S. your boyfriends pal is an ass!

Come here, have a big whinge about it, get it off your chest and ignore dickheads like that. He isnt worth the argument, nothing you say will change his mind.

I've had an argument once with a guy who actually insisted it hurts more to break your leg than have a baby.

Now I've done both and I actually agree with him, lol, but how the frig would he KNOW? So the argument is pointless because its not based on knowledge.

To me the lapband is in no way the easy way out. I was recently banded and still fight my food demons. Just because there is restriction does not mean you don't want to eat the same type of foods. You have to consciously make an effort every time you put something into your mouth to make it a healthy choice and abide by the rules of the band. Or else it won't be successful either. I am super afraid to fail at this too. This was the last chance and I am struggeling and learning every step of the way so far. What I would do is let it go in one ear and out the other, we do this as a last resort and for ourselves. Morons like that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

I pity the poor fool that says that to me. I'd go off on them in a heartbeat. Easy way out? Easy my foot! This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. AND I've done a lot of things in my 54 years.

it's a very common thing...unfortunately. My very own sister has said this and I just found out that one of my close friends (who is also very obese) has said the same thing. To them I usually say..."I didn't do the "easy" way...I did the only way what that worked!...this was a case of life and death. I don't care what you feel, I added 10-20 years to my life expectancy...so F$%/?" off!"

We were talking about this at my support group meeting, and it's a very common thing...especially from close family or friends that have weight problems of their own. It's sad but they are simply jealous and envious and it often pains them to see us having success at loosing weight because it reflects poorly on their own failure at it.

Those conversations never end well. Sadly, you're probably never going to change anyone's mind.

I tell people that sticking to a good eating plan is ABSOLUTELY easier with the band than it was without. If not, why bother to get the band?

But eating right with the band is still WAY more work than not dieting and eating whatever, which is what I used to do after I got done with my latest diet attempt. So I'm still working harder most days than I used to.

The easiest thing in the world to do is agree--with something slightly different than they intended. Yep. It's easier to walk around weighing 100 pounds less. Yep. It's easier to stick to a 1,200 calorie diet with the band than it was without. Yep. It's WAY less effort to run a mile or two than it used to be to WALK the same distance. If I'd known how much easier you skinny people had it, I would have requested the band YEARS ago.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
