Lapband & Colonoscopy

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with the band had a colonoscopy? Do you have to do anything different as far as the prep goes? I know my husband had to drink ALOT of stuff and I don't think I will be able to get that all down.

Will I have to get an unfill? I'm self pay and I'm finally at a sweet spot so I sure don't want to pay to get an unfill and then start all over

liquid should still go through your band fine so the "drinking a lot" shouldn't hurt you. And the scope doesn't go all the way to your stomach so the band won't impact that either. So you'll be fine. If you're in doubt ask your doc, but I think it's a non-issue.

The drink can make me nauseous and I was having a gagging reflex, so the doctor gave me pills to take instead of the liquid. They still taste pretty bad, and you still have to drink a lot of Water but it's a good option if you can't tolerate the drink taste. Good luck.

When I say alot, he had to drink 32 ozs of gatorade with Miralax in an hour. I don't believe that I would be able to do that with the band.

LJV52...As for the taste...I too have a pretty touchy gag reflex so I will ask about the pills.

Well you don't have to mix it with gatorade...and

I have easily had 32 ounces of Water (or more) with my band and pretty good restriction...in 15 minutes, let alone an hour. Whether you LIKE what you're drinking or not is one thing LOL but whether you CAN or not physically is something else! Liquid will go through your stoma into your stomach just fine unless you are so tight you can't swallow liquids (and your own saliva, for example)

However I don't blame you for not wanting to. I'd ask for the pills if it were me. I hated that mag. citrate they had me drink preop. It was just gross.

I had to get a colonoscopy 3 months after my banding. My band surgeon is also a gastro, so he was able to do my procedure and knew all about my band. I had to try to drink 3 liters of the liquid, but could take a whole day to do it. Didn't need an unfill and all went well.

Thanks! This makes me feel a lot more at ease.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
