Question for those who've gone from band to RNY

Recommended Posts

Does it feel different than the band in relation to the feeling of fullness? I have had my band over 1 1/2 years and weigh about the same as I did before my band placement. I just cannot handle the feeling of pressure in my chest the band causes....the so called feeling of fullness so I drink to wash down the food because I cannot handle that pressure, it makes me feel like I'm suffocating. I'm wondering if when you have the RNY, is the feeling of fullness closer to the way you would normally feel full before having any type of bariatric surgery. Also, are the rules similar to band rules such as no drinking with meals, no soda, no large pills/vitamins, etc? Thanks.

Mandi,

I've gotten the impression that there aren't that many RNY's here at lapbandtalk and it's a really good question as I'm revising to RNY myself in June.

Mandi,

I have had the "revision". I had a lap band, and now I am the "owner" of a bypass!

I find it hard to think of it as a "revision"....to me, revision sounds like an alteration of the original....but it's not. The RNY is a whole different thing.

Sometimes the band is NOT right for people, for a lot of reasons. The feeling of a foreign object in your body is problematic for many people.

In answer to your basic questions, the overall feeling IS more "natural" when you get full. Your stomach IS much smaller, and the feeling of fullness is real.

Some Drs advise to NOT have soda after a GB. Others say it's ok in small quantities. I found that if I had a little soda, it made me burp a lot easier than before the GB.

Some of the rules are the same. I have had a couple of complications with my GB, ....an ulcer, and a stricture. So, my "rules" have been a bit different.

If the band has NOt worked for you, you may find that a GB will. It certainly has for me. I am at a perfectly normal weight for my height/build for the first time in nearly 25 years. It wasn't easy, because there were some pretty serious complications that I experienced because of the damage that was caused as a result of the Lap Band being present. So, my recovery was much longer, and I have had the aforementioned complications, but in the end, I do believe that it was the right choice for me at this time.

If you have other questions, please feel free to ask......but remember, there is no ONE CORRECT method for everyone....we are all individuals, and we all respond differently to different procedures. You have not done well with the band, perhaps the RNY will be what you need.

HH

Headhunter,

I am familiar with strictures as my daughter had one and had to be ballooned twice but what are signs of ulcers with RNY and where was the ulcer, thanks Nancy.

What is the difference (meaning, what does it feel like) between a band stoma and a bypass stoma?

I would love to hear more information on this too. I lost my band due to erosion and my surgeon says he would be more comfortable having me do a RNY instead of getting another band. I am worried about the extra complications with the RNY and of its long-term success.

What about a sleeve? Better weight loss than banding, no malabsorption like bypass, and safer than bands or bypass.

I would certainly consider a sleeve but the hospital system that I use does not offer the sleeve. They only do bands and RNY. I could possibly go elsewhere but I would have to start the whole process over again.

Did you know that 1 in 5 bypass fails?

You won't always malabsorb calories, just during your honeymoon phase.

You will always malabsorb Vitamins.

If your bypass fails your options for revision are extremely limited.

If bypass is honestly what you want, great! Go for it! But don't get a procedure that isn't a perfect fit for you because you'd have to have records transferred to another doctor who does sleeves.

Oh, I totally agree with you. I didn't mean that I won't go somewhere else, but I do want to hear them out before I do. Maybe the RNY would be right for me. I just don't know yet.

I just had my band removed 2-22,and had a RNY. 16lbs lose so far. Not sure where that figure 1 in 5 gastric bypass fail. Ive never heard that.I had lost 60lbs on the band in 3.5yrs and then gained 20 back. Dr could never get the restriction at a good place for me.

I'm a band to bypass start over.... I had the band for 2 yrs 4 months... I feel so much better, so much more normal in the eating aspect. I have lost 51 pounds in just over two months. I'm already cured of diabetes, and high blood pressure, and assumed I'm cured of sleep apnea.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
