I can't believe it: I gained three lbs this morning!

Recommended Posts

I just couldn't believe my eyes this morning. I am three lbs heavier than yesterday. I am 2 weeks fours days post op. I lost 16 lbs in my 2 weeks liquid diet pre-op and 8 lbs on the 2 weeks liquid diet post-op. The scale still showed that I lost total 24 lbs yesterday. And this morning, oh boy, I was suddenly 3 lbs up. What could I have done? I have not been cheating on food. I started soft food this week; basically my Breakfast is a hard boiled egg and 1/4 cup of fat free cottage cheese w/h pineapple. lunch is 2-3 OZ of fish, 2 oz of well-cooked vege, and 2 oz of tofu. I usually ate three popsicles in between the meals as Snacks. Is this too much to eat? Yesterday besides all the usual stuff I ate half more egg in the morning, had maybe 5 sugar free popsicles instead of 3 and drank 1/4 cup light soymilk. Maybe it was the additional half egg, 2 popsicles and 1/4 cup of light soymilk that did it? But according to the calorie counter, I am still eating below 1000 calories. I am so discouraged this morning, just couldn't believe my eyes. I mean I was already frustrated that I am not losing weight. Now that I even gained! Did this ever happen to someone else? How long did it take you to lose the extra pounds and some more?

It's most likely just normal fluctuation....something you eventually encounter if you weigh yourself every day. Hormones, a little more salt in something you ate, maybe a little less activity...and there you go! It just happens sometimes. Continue to eat properly, drink your fluids and it will go away as quickly as it came. REMEMBER: It takes 3,500 extra calories above what it takes to maintain your weight to gain a pount. You certainly didn't eat more than 10,000 calories EXTRA yesterday. It happened to me to during the 4 weeks after surgery. I gained 3, lost 3, gained 2, lost 2. Had my first fill. Haven't gained any but haven't lost any either.

Another thought...constipation? I know, sorry to be the one to bring it up but it is a possibility that you are backing up. I always weigh myself after going to the bathroom. You'd be surprised how much waste weighs. Other than that, you sound like you are eating well. Stay on course and it will start showing on the scale :cursing:

If you are going to weigh yourself every day, understand that you need to be able to handle and understand fluctuations. You can use these fluctuations to learn and keep you accountable but don't let them drive you crazy or make you feel defeated.

I can gain three pounds in the same day...water gain, exercise, full bladder/bowel.

Only truly count what the scale says once a week use any other weigh-in's as reference. Or simply weigh once a week.

Thank you both very much. I just panicked this morning. I was like “what did I do to deserve the 3 lbs gain!". Probably both the tofu and fish were a little salty yesterday. I haven't really started exercising yet as I still have soreness in my port site area. I don't think I have Constipation. I did go to bathroom last night around 12 Am to pupu. Hopefully the 3 lbs will be gone soon.

I know I am the "driving myself nuts" type. I weigh myself not only once but twice or three times per day. I will try to refrain myself from the scale tomorrow morning and wait until Sunday morning.

When you have a gain that drastic overnight, it is almost ALWAYS Water retention. Don't weigh daily so that those fluctuations won't make you disheartened. Plus you were just banded 3/9. The first 6-8 weeks should be more about healing than weight loss.

I gained 2 pounds when I went from liquids to mushies. I remember I started my first thread on here about it.

The thing is that you have been on liquids for weeks now with pre-op and post-op and your intestines are basically empty. Normally we carry several pounds of stuff in there at all times. So when you start mushies, well, it loads back up and your system gets back to what is normal for it.

Now that you've endured that jump, you'll begin to lose again and will be fine.

Salt will get me every time. I gained 3 pounds this morning too, but I ate some salty fish at lunch and put a little to much McCormick Montreal Steak seasoning on my lamb chop last night. I puffed up during the night, and hand swollen hands when I got up. I KNEW I would weigh more. Sure enough. 3 extra pounds. I've been drinking Water all morning, and now it's going away. It happens. Constipation is also a culprit. If I don't go, I know it won't look good on the scale. You have to consider these things. Drink a lot of water. You'll be better tomorrow.

Thanks. It's just sometimes my legs are like having a mind of their own. I keep saying to myself: don't weigh it until Sunday. They just walked up to the scale already. LOL. I'll definitely try to refrain myself tomorrow and wait until Sunday to see if the Water weight has been gone. Hopefully by that time, I won't be disheartened again.

I understand it is time for healing not losing right now, but when I saw the number on the scale, it just drove me nuts coz I feel have been sticking to the plan and doing nothing wrong.

Suzanne and Aubrie, thank you both much. Both of you have lost more than 70 lbs. What a role model. I was also afraid if I am eating too much so I messed up the weight losing progess even though I know I shouldn't have been. Of course comparing to the liquid diet, it is much more real stuff now. As I am recovering, I also get hungrier. Each meal usually lasts me about three hours, then I get hungry again so I would have one or two sugar free popsicle to hold on till the time of the next meal.

I found a good snack for afternoons. V8 juice comes in little single serve cans. They have a low sodium flavor. It only has 30 calories, is loaded with nutrition, and is thick enough to hold me off until dinner. I'm big on veggies. this worked out to be a perfect solution. I don't get stuck either!!!

I'll definitely check V8 out on the weekend grocery shopping. I love vege too. Even though the nurse wants me to have one serving of well-cooked vege each meal, I am actually have 2 or even 3 servings each meal. Thanks for the suggestion.

Be sure and check the V8 for sodium; even the low sodium V8 has an excessive amount. People who don't have issues w/salt are supposed to keep it to 2300-2400 mg a day;if you are "salt sensitive" then it's under 2000. V8 (even the little low sodium ones) takes up a big chunk of that.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
