Pre-Op All Liquid Too Much Protein?

Recommended Posts

I am on day #5 of my pre-op Liquid Protein diet. I am keeping a log of what I am drinking, grams of Protein, fat, carbs and sugars. Yesterday, I had 198 grams of protein! i think what did it was the physician's weight loss center nuritional supplements that i sip throughout the day that total 36 grams of protein in 24oz. imagine if crystal light had 12 grams of protein in every 8oz.

what happens when we consume too much protein?

I found this on the 'net, and it is in keeping with what I've learned at nursing school:

She says that's because a diet in which Protein makes up more than 30% of your caloric intake causes a buildup of toxic ketones. So-called ketogenic diets can thrust your kidneys into overdrive in order to flush these ketones from your body. As your kidneys rid your body of these toxic ketones, you can lose a significant amount of Water, which puts you at risk of dehydration, particularly if you exercise heavily.

That water loss often shows up on the scale as weight loss. But along with losing water, you lose muscle mass and bone Calcium. The dehydration also strains your kidneys and puts stress on your heart. And dehydration from a ketogenic diet can make you feel weak and dizzy, give you bad breath, or lead to other problems.

It says you should get your .36 gm of protein for each pound you weigh.

I don't think one day will really hurt you, but 1. drink plenty of water to flush the ketone byproducts from your system and 2. try to keep it closer to the 60-80 gms a day we're told to get!

(too much can give you gout, too...in fact, my doc had me take a med while I was doing the preop diet to make sure I didn't develop it)

Protein is protein. If liquid protein weren't used like "protein" then the supplements we drink would be useless. If in doubt call your doc; but I think yes you got too much and shouldn't consistently get that much unless you aren't worrried about developing other long term problems. (that was a big complaint about Atkins, as I recall)

How much Protein do you need? There is so many different opinons on that subject. I personally feel that it depends on what is your physical activity and what are you trying to do with your body. 60-90 grams is perfectly fine when your physical activity is lower. But if you are a point where your physical activity is very high and your trying to build muscle you will need the extra protein. That's why body builders consume .75-1.2 grams per lb of body weight. Keep in mind drinking lots of Water should always be a priority. For example for me when I started my journey I was getting 70-80 grams per day. Now with my activity level through the rough I am consuming 110-150 per day based on if its a work out day or not. I am gaining muscle and losing fat at this point. Always trying to consume protein immediately after a work out to rebuild my muscle tissue. The amount of protein you are consuming is a little high at the stage your at. Lower that by consuming more water. Good luck and do lots of research. At this point try to keep your protein levels below 100.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
