after surgery side effects

Has anyone on here had trouble with diarreha after surgery and how come the pants I wore right before surgery fit and now that I'm down 24 lbs. there to tight? How strange is that? :sneaky: Does every doctor have a different post op diet for their patient's because as I read alot of the threads here everyone seems to be able to consume creamy broths and yogurt right after surgery? I'm still only able to have Clear Liquids, clear broths, Jello and my Protein Shakes for about 2-3 weeks, then I can graduate to creamy Soups and semi-solid mushies. I would kill to be able to have a creamy Soup, but I don't want to screw up the doc's orders. Any info would be appreciated.

As you have seen each Dr. has different instructions so you should follow your Dr. instructions. I guess they are all different because they alot of them went to different schools and were trained differently. But if Protein Shakes are OK I don't see why creamy Soups would not be OK, you could re-question your Dr. on that one.

I am definitely commisserating with you!!!!

Well first of all the diarrhea is from the liquid diet. liquid in=liquid out most likely. My Dr. didn't warn me about the pre-op or post op but they told me to try some imodium. I did yesterday and it helped some but you need to check with your Dr. Your pants are tight because your surgical area is inflamed, and probably because of the other stuff going on with the diarrhea- BLOATING. Your stomach is trying to figure out what the heck happened here and your digestive system is in a temporary turmoil. Your Doctor wants your stomach to rest before introducing things to it that will cause it to churn. It is true every Dr. is different but your Dr. is going by what has worked best for their practice. I can barely get the fluids or the broth in a day let alone want creamy soup. The only I can really suggest is speaking with your Dr.'s office and asking if you can have the other things sooner.

Hang in there, it will be worth it in the end (at leas that's what I keep telling myself! LOL)

I was also ordered the liquid diet for 2 weeks. But after a week and still not feeling better plus feeling like I was starving to death. I tried some refired Beans with cheese.. it worked. So at about a weak I added mushies like baby food. When I went to the nutritionist 3 weeks after surgery. She asked what I had been eating.. when I said mushies she looked at me like what is that? I got that off this website and other lapband sites.. So she said I was supposed to be doing a high Protein diet for 6 weeks. I told her I h/n had any problems and have started (4weeks) eating regular food salad, wraps etc. She gave me this list of approved foods only green beans and carrots for veges & meats/chesse.. But pre-op and 4 weeks out I've lost 30bs. So I know I may get some boos but I say do what you can handle.. Your body will let you know if it's too soon. The goal is to eat like normal people just alot less!

Hey Lynmcg saw your post and I thought I would reply. I had a horrible problem with diarreha - I couldn't even leave my house. I called Dr. Vernon's office and spoke with the nutritionist and she said many patients can not handle the lactose found in the Protein Shakes after surgery. She suggested that I switch to Glucerna, a pre-made shake meant for diabetics that does not contain any lactose. Since we have the same surgeon I would call and ask if that is an option for you as well. It has definitely improved my situation.

I don't have surgery for another 9 days, but my pharm. tech told me today that the antibiotics we are put on after surgery often cause a loose stool. As far as the post-op diet goes, I'm with Camp3... My Dr. actually lets me go on mushies on day 4-14. After day 14, I progress to a regular diet. Days 1-3 are all clear liquids. He has performed over 1700 surgerys and is board certified as a teaching Dr., so I am pretty confident in what he says. I would just listen to your body, if it hurts or wont go down then slow it down and go back on liquids....I hope you figure it out. Good luck! :sneaky:

Thanks everyone for your help. I called my nutrionist like Alyson said and she told me to also get the glycerna. I guess I have a lactose intolerance I didn't know I had? boy that stuff is expensive. Guess I'll give it a try and see what happens.

I too have experienced diarreha. I agree that it is from the Protein Shakes. I don't have it everyday but off and on. I am going in to my 3rd week and can add soft solids. But I agree that diarreha is horrible.

Lynmcg, the glucerna is expensive, but a day after I started it the diarreha pretty much stopped. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck!

I can't remember for how long, but my abdomen was swollen for a long time after surgery, I looked pregnant! I'm sure that's why your pants are fitting differently. I remember that once it started to go down, it was gone within a week or so though so hang in there :tt2:

Hello All,

I had my surgery on March 15th, and am feeling weird pains in my chest (breasts) and face.. Could it be gas? and also, sorry to say this, but I have not had a BM whatsoever since my surgery, is that normal?

Leg cramps could be from dehydration, be sure to take in enough clear liquids to meet you Water needs. I did not have a BM for 5 days after surgery. I beleive because there was nothing in my intestines prior to surgery, and then only clear and full liquids after surgery, so it just takes longer. Once you get on solid foods things should get back closer to normal. At least that's what I think, I am only 10 days out from surgery.

I've also been having diarrhea everyday this week. I am week two post-op. The weird thing is that I didn't have any diarrhea problem this first week. I sometimes have to go to the bathroom 7-8 times a day. I also took some Imodium, it helped out somewhat not completely though. The thing that most disappoints me is that even though I am still on liquid this week and diarrhea pretty much made everything flushed my body, I didn't lose one pound this week. I am really hungry for real food. My doctor told me to stay on liquid diet the first two weeks. Liquids include broth, popsicles, Protein Shake, skim milk and sugar free Jell-O. I can’t wait to start on soft food next week. The only soft food I am allowed are fish, eggs, low fat cheese, cooked really well non-stringy vegetables and tofu. I am starving for the real food. I think I am going to start soft food this Sunday.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
