The Scale Is Not Moving Grrrrr.....

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone well its been 3 weeks now since being banded and the damn

scale has not moved since after the first week. I'm getting discouraged.

I've been eating under 1000 cal. just mushies and been walking each day

but seems like I'm stuck. I've been going back and forth with 2-3lbs. one

day up next down but haven't gone beyond in 2 weeks. I've lost a total

of 15lbs which I'm grateful for. It just seems I'm working so hard and not

getting anymore results. I see Dr. on 25th maybe once I get my first fill

things will change I hope so.

Of course they will since the band was designed ot be filled in order for it to work, It is normal to not lose weight without a fill. The first 6 weeks after surgery should not be focused on weight loss but on healing..you have the rest of your life with the band to lose the wieght. If you lose weight during the healing phase then great..it is a bonus for you. DOnt get discouraged...Let me warn you too, once you go from mushies to solids you most liekly wil lse a gain..that is normal. Dont freak out!

Good Luck and hang in there

Hang in there 'Flower,

Its been 3 weeks for me too and I have the same problem. I lost 11lbs early on and nothing since. I am trying not to worry about it though because basically without a fill its very like being without a band. It may be that you are putting on muscle (which is heavier than fat) which will counter any weight lost or that you are not eating enough. I know that if I ate 1000cals a day my metabolism would just shut down and hang on to every bit of fat it could. So I would say, give yourself some time, dont panic and trust in yourself, your surgeon and your band. You will be fine

Never Ever go below 800 Cal a day- I just met with my nutricianist & she said that can put you into a starving mode & you on't lose. 1000 cal a day is fine -she said at least for me she did. I am 229 right now & she said I can continue to do 1000 for awhile to try & lose. Speed up the exercise if you can & stick with it. I had a platue that lasted 6 weeks with just one fill. Up & down the same 3 pound went week after week. Since my second fill I am eating less & the scale is moving but still slow. Keep up the water- It will move eventually-Chin Up! :0)

Hey "Flower....

I guess quite a few of us are complaining about the same thing!!! See the following post..

I am wondering about calories and the breakdown of such and weight loss. I was banded July 22. I have lost about 28 lbs plus 10 before for a total of 38 lbs or so. Great,.....not complaining about that. Probably due to 2 weeks of liquids. Since I went on food I have not lost a single thing. I am playing with the same 5 lbs, either up or down. It has been so damn muggy here I may have some Fluid retention some days, but not really too bad. I logged my food onto fitday.com and I am in the 700 to 850 calories a day. Some time I wonder if my fat content is too high due to cheese. I drink all my Water every day and do exercise to an exercise tape or do 1 hour of walking at varied speeds. I am so frustrated. I am getting a fill next week. Hopefully this helps. What is your calorie count for the day. I am following amounts of 3 oz meat..some fat free milk, etc... Would 2 tbs of regular cream cheese on 4 fat free triscuits sabotage my day.....Your thoughts

For all of you new bandsters let me just tell you that it is perfectly normal to not lose wei ght during the first 6 weeks. You have NO fill...the band is desigend to work it's best with fills! It is also normal to not lose during the liquid phase since you are not taking in hardly any calories. You know that old addage that our bodies will conserve whatever we put into it if it thinks we are starving it and that is what is most likely happening during the liquid phase. Do not fret or get discouraged. Most of us here were where you are at one time or another. Once you are healed and getting your fills things will change I promise. One thing I have learend during my 17 months with my band is there are going to be times when I do not lose on the scale but I'm losing inches. I'm also gaining my life back so when the scale doesnt move, think of all of the possitive things in your life that has changed since you got your band. For some of us it has been getting off blood pressure meds, for others it is getting off insulin, for others it has been more energy, for others it is no more sleep apnea and for others it is No back or joint pain. You get my drift, I'm sure. Do not let the scale dictate your success or failure with the band. The band is a lifelong tool, this is a lifelong journey it is going to take some time but the key is patience. You have all made the first step to a happier healthier life.

P.S. Did any of your Dr.'s tell you that the first 6 weeks is not about weight loss but about healing? Any weight loss during the pre fill stage is a bonus? THey should have if the ydidnt ..this was my Dr.'s biggest stressing point to me before he sent me home after surgery

I've gotten over several plateaus by eating more. Just don't "Diet" for several days or a week. Then go to about 1200 calories a day and often you will find that you will lose. You have to shake things up with your body sometimes.

And don't weigh yourself for a couple of weeks!!!

And ITA with La Madam-you are not really supposed to be losing massive amounts of weight until you get one (or probably more) fills. I do wonder if the docs tell people that these days, too!

Your body's job right now is not weight loss; it is healing from surgery.

Wow, I am really glad I found this board. I, too, had the same concerns, 14 lbs first few weeks, then nothing. I went several weeks wondering if I was doing something wrong. I am back on the losing side, once I got my first fills.

I can see that its normal not to lose with an unfilled band.

What I really dont get is the calorie levels people are on.

Now, if I care to use my willpower and stick at it (which sometimes I do), I can easily lose 3lb a week for quite a while on 1500 calories a day. I guess I'm pretty active though.

Is it truly necessary to go so low as 1000? Long term doesnt that just shut down your metabolism and put you at risk of undernourishment?

1000 calories seem to be the consensus everywhere, but from my years of dieting and reading health magazines, I think 1200 is the minimum calories women should go for to lose weight. The way I look at it, consuming a bit over 1000 (usu I consume 1200 to 1500 and still lose weight) makes no difference because it's still half of what I used to it pre-band! -:)

It's like the old saying goes, misery loves company. But for fear of sounding like Pollyanna, at least we have all the wonderful people here who truly do understand our hurts, frustrations and disappoints. Even more importantly, we have all these wonderful people to share our joys, highs and triumps as well.

It is truly a remarkable time when we discover that not only are we feeling and thinking the way we do, but that there are others who share the exact same feelings and thoughts. And I think that's one of the biggest NSV's we could ever ask for, new friends who know how we are feeling and we know how they are feeling and we can all simply understand, no judgement, just unconditional acceptance.

Just like the rest of you, I am terribly excited over having found this sight and I am really enjoying learning about each of you through the different threads. You are all wonderful, loving, caring, and funny people, and I fit in!!! Isn't that great?! We all fit in.

Take care

Cindy aka chichigirl

Personally, I think we should take la madam's post in this thread....print it and everyone should paste it to their favorite wall in the house so it could be read and re-read on a daily basis.....thank you, la madam!

I had the same problem a couple of weeks, and after the 1st two weeks of my surgery,

i guess because my body was in shock because of the surgery and the liquid diet!

i used to feed it with a .. whole pizza and 2 plates Pasta and seems my body

wanted some of its old nutrition.. so my body revenged me with a 2 weels plateau...

Now that im 7 weeks im losing again .. my point is don't worry! im sure you re losing

inches now but very soon you will losing also weight!!

I'm a daily scale user lol :) because it keeps me on truck! im still very new with the Band and i need to know whats goin on daily! later i will not use it that much :-)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
