I want LB; my doc wants GBPS

Recommended Posts

I received a call from the nurse at my docs office and while I still have to do my own research and make my own decision I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. I'm going to be reading the post below in great detail too.

The nurse says the doc is going to recommend me for GBPS because my main co-morbidity is diabetes (even though I think it is more pre-diabetes/PCOS but uncontrolled diabetes is what is in my medical record). She said the GBPS eliminates the diabetes, almost a "surgical cure". I wasn't too keen on it because I just really don't like the idea of my intestines being cut. I mentioned the reversal of the LB if needed and she said that no insurance company will pay for it unless it is defective. She mentioned that I don't have to go for the fills 4x a year which is a positive I think but I don't see that as any more than a slight nuisance.

She said the ultimate decision is up to me.

My father was dx with pre-diabetes (on met) at around age 60. I truely believe that in both of our cases it is lifestyle even if it is in our history and who can say what my health will be like 30 years from now. I would be interested to hear what others with PCOS and LB think because it would be nice for those symptoms to go away.

I'm just not convinced about GBPS.

it really is more of a choice you make then your doctor.

seriously you have to understand both ways the reason why gastric is better in that way is because you cant eat sugar. and you really will lose weight way way quicker. so its a quick fix in my opinion. lapband is more of a lifestyle change well both are changes but gastric gives you no choice you will lose the weight. lap band you have to be mentally ready for it. because you have to make good food choices and change your eating habits all it will control is how much you eat. also you have to be ready to excerise. gastric you will lose no matter what the first year but what happens afterwards? you lose the weight but you havent actually learned to eat the correct way and in like 5 years are you going to be back to the same weight you were when you first started? lap band is alittle more of a hassle but to me its a good hassle. yes you have to get fills and yes you have to work on losing as in eating the right way and also excerising. the band is not a miracle its a choice and will help you along the way to making a better lifestyle change. also think about in 4 or 5 years with the gastric you gain weight what can you do about it? if you are banded you can get a fill and work on it again. its like having a diet there anytime you need it and you can just go get a fill.

In Australia - where the lapband surgery has been perfromed for the last 15 years - they recently undertook a study that compared lapbanded diabetic patients with diabetics who control their diabetes with diet and exercise. They found that in 75% of the cases where the diabetic was lapbanded, they went into remission.

I looked into the lapband because I have a very strong familial history of diabetes and heart disease. My mother and 6 of her siblings are diabetic. My younger brother is diabetic and my younger sister had GD and is now at a high risk of diabetes.

The study was what spurred me on to having the lapband surgery done. A friend of mine, having followed my journey, got lapbanded 3 months after me and has PCOS and diabetes (she was on met). In less than a month, her blood suger levels were normal. In 3 months, she was pregnant after having her first 28 day cycle in over 2 years the month before.

I'm not saying that GB wouldn't help, I'm saying I don't think the nurse is completely correct in saying that lapbanding won't help with diabetes, and would not 'cure' it. Of course there are no gaurantees it would cure it, but then again there are no gaurantees with GB either, and it's a MUCH bigger surgery.

Google 'lapband' and 'diabetes' I'm sure you'll be able to find some info on the studies around the place.

I agree with what was said above by the other posters.

But what struck me were your words. You don't want to have your intestines cut apart. That's a pretty good sign that GB then isn't for you.

Let me tell you what I think your doctor hears though when you say, "Lapband is reversable" it translates into, "I'm not committed".

Really, when I said that to my doc he pretty much said that to me. He made me defend why I wanted to be banded with out comparing it to Gastric Bypass. That was a challenge because all my reasoning was based by contrasting the two.

So why banding? It's safe and effective. You have the will and the ability for one more solid push to diet and exercise, but you need a little help from the tool. You like the follow up care with fills and seeing the doctor, you like having a team help you succeed.

You go ahead an answer for yourself too. If lapband is right for you you'll know. And then at the point tell your doctor to shut the hell up about bypass because that's just not going to happen. Oops that me projecting again, because that's what I told mine.

Sounds like LB is the surgery for you.... :(

I had SEVERE PCOS and IR...I won't bore you with my detailed hell but it literally was so severe that it almost killed me. And I am not kidding. My body stopped making hormones all together for many years and 48 hours AFTER surgery, it felt like a major rainstorm inside my body...I knew it was hormones flooding back. I felt alive again. I literally haven't had ANY of the at least 40 symptoms I did before...migraines, blood sugar issues...all gone.

And just so you know (I am baffled that you doctor doesn't know) LB according to doctors prevents/stops Insulin Resistant, Type II Diabetes...that rocks...our IR will never turn in to Type II.

WOOHOO!!!

Good luck in your decision.

LBC

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
