I thought PBing was differant

Recommended Posts

Yesterday evening I ate chicken for the second time, it was mixed in with chicken and dumplings, I ate slow and I chewed like crazy having learned how important the two were the first time I ate chicken. I knew I had gotten a couple small pieces of dumplings but I was sure they were chewed well as well. Well I didn't do something right. I discovered the efinition of PBing for myself. It wasn't what I'd read about, not only did it feel stuck but it hurt really bad like someone shoved a fist into my chest and to add to it I was sick for over 2 hours with very little luck on bringing much up. What I'd read previously was about the pain getting sick but I hadn't read about both or it pretty much stopping you for over 2 hours. Is this normal? Do I need to mention it to my Dr? I never want to feel that again although it seems the only way around that is baby food and slider foods and I don't want that either. Thanks in advance for your help

I have had it last an hour before, and it sucks.

And yes, since you are newly banded, I think you should mention it to your dr. You will probably need to go on liquids for a day or two until the swelling goes down. If it lasted over 2 hours there is probably swelling.

It may have been the dumplings. I was banded nov 6/09 and can't eat anything that is doughy or I end up pbing and I agree it is something you want to avoid. Good idea to check with your Dr

Thanks, I had already planned on doing liquids/soup today, even though I did what we considered the most polite feminine getting sick which may be while it lasted 2 hours, I thought the easier I threw up the easier on my band and tummy it would be. I have an appt tomorrow and will mention it then even though I know dumplings aren't on my diet yet and obviously never will be after last night

Both the chicken and the dumplings separately are things that are easy for bandsters to get stuck on. Put them together and it could be a double whammy.

Since it was so painful and lasted so long, you are likely to have some stomach swelling which makes it likely for other foods that normal don't make you stuck may not cause a problem for a day or two.

I also agree with going on liquids for a day or two and have a mushy or two first before trying something solid again. If you get stuck again it can cause more harm and your are more prone to getting stuck after a previous pb.

Totally agree Im the same way. And yes it hurts like mad, be careful. That is one of the things that started my problem now. Im actually throwing up black stuff and I havent eaten anything. Plus I have a pain in my stomach. I threw up almost everytime I ate. Things would get stuck, etc. Anyway, PBing isnt fun, nor is slimming.. its just nasty.

I don't want to scare you, but I am a little concerned about your post.

Throwing up black stuff without haven eaten anything plus the pain in the stomach after having an extended time of continuous problems pb'ing/vomiting could be indicative of a serious issue.

The black stuff may be bile or blood and you should call your doctor immediately. I would also insist on being seen immediately. If you can't get into your band doctor right away, perhaps you should maybe consider the emergency room to have it scoped out. I would be concerned about the possibility of an ulcer or erosion.

The sooner you are seen, the more damage control you can do to keep it from getting worse. Perhaps you could even go to a full liquid diet for the moment until you are seen if it can help prevent any further vomitting.

Please let us know what the doctor says. I am really sorry you are suffering in this way.

Stopping you for 2 hours does seem a little intense just for some stuck chicken and dough. The stress of having a feeling like that is enough to cramp everything up and it takes a while to settle it back down. I can no longer eat eggs in any form without having them come back up, same for most breads, toast or spaghetti. I think it probably is normal for the two to be happening at the same time, just try to relax and take a break from the meal. Hope this helps.:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
