Coffee doesn't taste the same???

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone is feeling like me regarding coffee. Up until my surgery last week, I would have about 3-4 BIG cups of coffee every day. I mean, you do not want to talk to me in the a.m. unless I have had a cup. Now post op; tried to have some Decaf and I just don't have the taste for it anymore. It just simply doesn't taste the same and have been drinking decaf tetley's black tea with skim plus and splenda. I never EVER thought my love affair wih coffee would be affected. Is this normal and has anyone else experienced this or another food/beverage aversion post op?? Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are going to miss me!

I still have my coffee; although I only have 1.5 - 2 cups a day, and when I make it, I make half regular and half Decaf. I drink it with half and half and no sugar. This is how I used to have it before the band, and how I continue to have it.

I do find that if I have any more than that; or if I increase the amount of caffeinated coffee I drink, that I can get into problems, either with dehydration (since caffeine is a diuretic) or with gas. But if I stick to the amounts above, I have no problem... and it tastes just as good as it ever did!

I guess it's a matter of finding the amount that works for you. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
