Looking for Surgeon for Lap-Band

Recommended Posts

I am new to this site and would like to get some information on Lap-Band. I've started the "My Journey" on Lap-Band.com (Allergan now offers discounted and or free memberships to Curves, Lindora, and Fit-Day - check out their website) and I've been reviewing surgeons in my area (San Mateo, CA), but have not decided who I will select to perform my procedure.

I've been to the group in Burlingame (Dr’s Wetter, Foster, and Sanchez) and was treated horribly by their coordinator Janet (never returned phone calls, was not helpful with insurance, and seemed annoyed/agitated by my questions). The day of my appointment (with Dr. Wetter) I waited for an hour and 15 minutes before he saw me, he was rushed, and didn’t have the correct chart when he entered my room. He finally found my chart and from that point the rest of the appointment went downhill. I felt rushed, anxious, and he just would not answer my questions. I am a concerned patient (I hold a Master’s Degree and work with Physically/Mentally challenged patients and their families) and want to do my due diligence before I put fate to the test and have surgery by a perfect stranger. When I asked him about Lap-Band he moved the conversation towards the Realize band and told me that Realize in the newest and safest band on the market. By doing my research ahead of time I challenged him on his connection to Johnson and Johnson and he became very irritated. Come to find out Dr. Wetter is a “paid proctor” for Johnson and Johnson hence, he and his group recommend the Realize band for all their patients for their financial gain. This is a common practice in medicine, and should be understood by all patients before they let a surgeon select a product based upon his/her financial relationship with a corporation.

I am moving on and haven’t become discouraged by my experience, but rest assured I will continue to research surgeons and products carefully. Any surgeon recommendations on the Peninsula/San Jose, CA are welcomed.

My experence with Dr Wetter was totally different. He and his staff have been just wonderful. I was banded on 10 Feb 2009 and could not be happier. I would recommend him to anyone. I did my own research while waiting for my first appointment and I wanted the Realize band, so it was not a big deal to me. I did not work with Janet, but the ones I have worked with are just the best and so easy to talk to. Sorry you had such a bad experence. Hope you are doing better with someone else now. There is also a support group in the bay area that meets once a month at different locations for lunch. I have not been with them yet but they are very nice to invite me and everyone else. Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
