I don't think my surgeon gets it..what do you think?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 9/22 and had my first and only fill on 11/11.

Today I went for my second fill and when the surgeon came in (I haven't lost any weight since the 2 weeks post op) he started lecturing me on "the band is only a tool, etc.." and I told him that when the amount of food that I need to eat to lose weight both satisfies me and controls my hunger - then I'll lose weight. Here are the reasons I don't think he gets it..then tell me what you think.

1) He is a general surgeon who has only done 23 bandings.

2) In the hospital when I complained about left shoulder pain after surgery, he said it is usually in the right (I have researched this - it is almost always the left)

3) At my 3 week post-op visit he said he wanted me to lose 10-15 pounds by the next visit (in 3 weeks) with no fill.

4) He doesn't seem to take into account that I have lost 60 pounds in almost 4 years - and none of it due to the band. (pre and post op diets)

5) I have something underneath the port incision that looks like a cold sore. He didn't know what it was but couldn't prescribe anything because he said he's "just a surgeon he doesn't know what to prescribe - I would have to go to my PCP."

6) I didn't get a fill today because I told him of my chronic shoulder pain so he wants me to get an upper GI to see if the band is okay. This I agree with.

7) He seemed surprised that I have the same capacity for food as I did pre-band (I have 2cc's in a 10cc band).

I am 187 now and almost didn't qualify for the banding because my pre-op BMI went below 35.

I don't know what to think. I want to have confidence in him and he did a good job surgically. But I have doubts.

I get you, I don't get him...in other words, I concure. I'll be banded by May and I really don't expect to get to a good restriction until the holidays...until then, many people gain weight or lose only a little. Yes, it's a tool, but until it starts working for you there's little you can do to use it (like trying to use a lawn mower without starting the engine).

Why did you pick such an inexperienced surgeon? Did your insurance force it? I'd call and complain about him if that's the case.

cleos mom, your post makes me really appreciate my surgeon.

you have a low bmi; it's not likely your weight will clip off fast..10-15lbs in 3wks, PLEASE pm me if you can do this. the most i ever lost in a 1 month period was 8 & that was the first month of banding. it's just not realistic or likely in many cases.

you may also require MANY fills for restriction - i needed 8.5ccs in my 10cc band before i "got it".....

you already had your surgery done by him - does the hospital you went to afford you another dr to work with? nutritionist? nurse?

only 23 bands under his belt - that's pretty green to be lecturing with such a small sampling of patients.

hope your GI turns out OK!

From hanging here for a few years, I'd say there's literally hundreds of surgeons that "dont get it". A surgeon is just a person, with his own personal life history behind him. Bariatric surgery is a rising field, its a great money spinner and many get into it for this reason. They may never have battled weight, never have been obese, never dealt with the issues of obesity before. You dont need to be an expert in any of that to place a lapband. My centre is the same, my surgeon was a general bariatric surgeon before getting into banding. He placed my band, he was a nice guy, he'd done enough bands to be very experienced in dealing with obesity, but I have only ever seen him three times in three years, the fills and general aftercare are managed by a team of doctors, my doctor is actually a sports medicine guy with many other interests and responsibilities outside his time at the clinic.

But key is the lack of judgement. My doctor is whippet like, he's obviously NEVER had a weight problem, he deals with olympic athletes most of the time and not fat emotional women, lol, but boy he does a great job at it.

That's what you want isnt it? Just some understanding, not judgement. Could you look for someone else?

Thanks everyone for your response. I am an older patient (just turned 58) and have problems driving so I chose a hospital close to home. There are only two surgeons who do this surgery - him and his partner. I originally had his partner but they switched me in order to schedule my surgery in Sept. (the other surgeon had too busy a schedule). And the other surgeon is emaciated (I'll bet he's a runner). Plus, my surgeon only sees bariatric surgery patients on Tuesdays in another doctor's office (who isn't there on Tuesdays). I also found out when I called after hours that he doesn't have an answering service - it just says go to the ER. I did post on this board before my surgery about his having only done 22 bandings and several repliers didn't think that was a problem - some said their doctors hadn't done a lot, either. Anyway, we'll see how the upper GI goes, if anything happens with my shoulder pain. Plus, since I have had food stuck twice already (my fault, I know) they scare the hell out of you about getting another fill. My nutritionist said I was lucky the food passed and I didn't need to have it removed in the ER. Pleasant thought. I guess I am having second thoughts about this whole band thing at this point. It's not what I thought it would be.

I'm really truly sorry that some people posted that inexperience, in their opinions, wasn't a problem. Obviously, it is. I've always been taught that to pick any "expert"...you select one that DOES whatever...A LOT. Plays the piano? You don't want one who plays the clarinet and just took up the piano. Works on your transmission? You don't want a guy who always changed the oil and now is learning trannies. Removes your gall bladder? You don't pick a plastic surgeon, no matter how skilled. I can see how you'd think "the people here are pros, they know". Sadly, though, we often don't. We can say what happened TO US...but that's very individualized and nothing to base YOUR health and safety on!

So a warning to those thinking of getting the band....take what you read here with a grain of salt! This place can be a WONDERFUL source of info...but not your ONLY source of info.

And Cleo's mom If you can possibly switch surgeons, I'd do so. The aftercare is 9/10 of the band, and you're not getting it. Venting about it here can help but you need to take care of yourself and apparently your surgeon can't help you with that. He may be highly skilled in the OR but he needs training, nevertheless. If you don't want to keep on being his guinea pig, find a new doc!

I'm really sorry you're having the trouble with him, but don't compound it by hanging in there. You're already doubting the band. Find a new one with some support!

some insurances require the bariartric surgeon to have at least 300-400 surgeries to be competant in the craft. Some dont.... I would consult a bariartric surgeon to check this guy's advice... doesnt sound right.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
