band slippage, stitches popping and erosion

Recommended Posts

I have been reading alot in this site about slippage, band erosion, and stitches popping and to be honest, I am scared out of my mind right now. How do I know if my stitches have popped or is I have a slip. I have not been sick or vomitting like I have read other LB patients have had but I am still concerned. How do I know? Please help!

When were you banded? Have you followed your surgeons directions? If you have deviated from his instructions, how egregious was the deviation? Did you, like one poster, eat a hamburger at 2 days post op? Or did you eat a hamburger at 6 weeks post op? (big difference there) Do you have pain?

The band CAN slip for no apparent reason. Usually, however, slipping and erosion (and both are rare; less than 5% of all cases) is caused by the person abusing the band in some way. Either by "cheating" on their post op diet, or by, for example, being too tight and vomiting and vomiting and VOMITING (once the band is healed I think it takes a LOT to dislodge it)

Erosion and slipping are nothing any of us want. So if you just follow YOUR SURGEON"S rules (not what someone here tells you they got away with) odds are that you'll never ever had that problem!

No, I did as the surgeon told me for the first 3 months. Didnt really start "cheating" til a few months ago. I am 13 months post op and have had no problems (that I know of). No vomitting, no reflux, nothing. Just reading about other patients struggles with stitches popping, erosions and slippage really made me think if I was having problems and not even know it. Just really concerned and a little worried.

If you're still worried, then discuss it with your surgeon so s/he can put your mind at ease!

You will avoid slippage, as long as you don't over eat. Be careful and follow the guidelines. If you vomit a lot, by overeating, I heard that can make your band slip. Good Luck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
