Well my LAP-BAND® adventure is over. I can't get the hospital to tell me how much it is going to cost. When I try they tell me it could be $20000 to $30000. I can't get any straight answer and it comes down to I can't afford it. I am very depressed about it. Like I said, I seen a light at the end of the tunnel and it was slammed shut.

What really makes me mad is if I was a self pay they offer a package deal that is $19000 but since I got a insurance approval they will not give me that.eek.gif

I will stick to dieting and working out. Right I workout 6 days a week for 2 to 4 hours each session. I am bulking up with a lot of muscle but I just can't get the fat off. Even with a insane about of running and cardo. Right now I have my doctors dumbfounded on y I am not losing fat.

I just wanted to thank everyone for for their help. I guess I was born fat and will die fat, that's life.

Thank you everyone for your time.

Hey Policeman. I'm very ignorant of all things insurance, so forgive the stupid question, but.....you do have insurance, yes?

If the hospital won't help you, maybe the bariatric surgeon's office will?

I really have a tough time seeing that your bill would be between 20 - 30 K with insurance paying some of that. Dude, check out another hospital.....or Mexico, for that matter.

Or just let it go, if that's what you want to do.

I say shop around. I'll bet you can find someone who will accept that amount for payment in full for the surgery, hospital stay (esp if done in surgicenter), and first few fills. Or ask your insurance if they will reimburse claim if you get it done in Mexico. Don't give up!

Policeman,

If you have insurance approval, you should only have to pay your copay, right?? That and any deductible that you would have. The dr. office should be able to give you the quote, and hospital too, to allow you to get the money gathered:mad2: doesn't make sense. My doctor and hospital told me up front I would have to pay $$$$ dollars for my deductible, before surgery. You need to ask to speak to the billing supervisor. They can even call your insurance company and find out how much of your deductible you have met. Someone is just dropping the ball. I will be praying for you.

God Bless,

addy

Don't give up! If you have to, and can, go the self-pay route, no hospital is going to turn down money.

Don't give up on yourself, not ever. You're way too young to be talking that way. Find out what you don't know... Will the insurance cover the surgery at different hospital...it sounds like there are others that are cheaper? Will they cover this in Mexico? Do they have better coverage on other WLS, like RnY? Are there hospital 'studies' you could get into? If you've exausted everything else on WLS then get help with the coverage you have...have the Dr's. checked your thyroid? Can they at least put you on a supervised exercise and diet plan? If you really believe what you said above then that's exactly what you'll get. I know this seems like Mt. Everest right now, and I have no idea how I'll react if I get denied, but don't you ever give up on you. Love yourself enough to get healthy again.

It seems, if I understand that you have insurance and the approval is done! That's the hardest part. Take it for someone who fought over a year for insurance approval. So congrats.

I know that my insurance was billed about 35,000- and paid somewhere around 16,000. I was then charged I think less then $200 between the hospital, surgeon etc.

You have to do what's right for you but make the decision based on the best thing for you- not out of frustration.

Had my surgery in Tyler,Texas.Dr.only charged 4,300,but hospital charged 39,000 and would have been only 15,000 if I had not had to be banded twice (first band was too small (10cc) and had to replace it with a 14cc)I was out of pocket about 2,700.Every cent has been worth it.Im one year out and 80 pounds lighter and still losing.

Policeman 116: Don't give up me and my husband are going thru TLC edge which the cost is 9.990 each. It covers everything. They have a website TLCedge.com please try this. I'm sure they have an office where you are at. If nothing else go to the website and contact them and take some vacation time off and come down here. We did our first appointments in one day and they sat us up with the doctor to do all that is needed and for some of it you can use your family doctor. They will also set up your surgeon for you also. So don't give up try this site and let us know how it comes out.

I am curious as well.. why don't you go to another place, another doctor, another city?

My insurance paid for mine and it was 27,432 to have the surgery.

Please don't give up. You've gotten some good advice.

I don't understand the insurance/cost correlation either. Can you explain more, please?

If you don't want to go to Mexico or Texas, I've heard good things about Dr. Kirshenbaum (sp?) in CO on here. With you being in Indiana tho, don't know if you want to or can travel.

Hang in there.

OK, I'm in a mood so this won't sound very nice. Policeman116, if you give up that easily before the surgery, then you probably don't have what it takes to be a success after the surgery. We can support and help you, but we can't lose the weight for you. I admit, I have no patience for people who lie down and cry.

Since Donna is so mad at me I will not give up. I have shopped around the area and the prices are about the same. I really can't travel because work will not give me the time off. So has anyone used care credit? My doctor is not listed. The reason I want to stay with her so badly is because she is considered one of the best in the courty. In my profession I can't risk having a slippage or so on.

How does care credit work? I am kinda of dumb when it comes to insurance and stuff like that. I don't get sick often.

And thank u Donna I need to quit felling sorry for myself.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
